That is not ion propulsion. That is a plasma propulsion which is related. (Ion propulsion is generally electrostatic this is electromagnetic and generates a lot more thrust.) Back in the 60s or 70s we were experimenting with them and got some crazy powerful engines. The problem was they needed nuclear reactors as power sources and most combined a chemical oxidation with a electromagnetic acceleration stage at the exhaust. There were also nuclear thermal rockets that worked primarily off the heat of the reactor. Now a days we've got insanely powerful solar panels, high temperature super conductors, lots of experience with RF heating of plasma (fusion research), and relatively tiny nuclear reactors for subs and aircraft carriers. The focus seems to be more on fuel economy though to no uber powerful chemical-plasma hybrid rockets yet.

Not that that wasn't really funny but perhaps we should move away from me and back to how awesome Mars is. Like there is apparently enough water ice to live there pretty comfortably. That and we can get there much quicker then we originally thought. Its only a matter of time before we lead a slave rebellion on Mars.
