Fighter was killed by the giant back at the beginning of 8BT. All of this has just been a hallucination/dream he's been having in the last few moments of his life.

Idea:
Now that fighter has lost all swordplay ability, his hidden intelligence has surfaced. I vaguely remember a comic involving his intelligence duking it out with his mad sword skills in the arena of his mind, and his intelligence getting its ass handed to it. So, maybe he's off being crazy smart and winning with his brains. Or, he forgot how to breathe.
