Call it the subforum experiment part 2. We thought it'd be neat to have a subforum dedicated to talking about current news, if only to see what happens if we have one. We do get a lot of news threads in General!

I'll move relevant threads from the past two weeks or so over from General and make a little subforum rules thread. Stay tuned!

Good lord! Community feedback has been taken seriously?
I welcome this, though. Now we have one board to generally be random and hilarious about everything and one board to be random and hilarious about Sarah Palin and still-random-but-bordering-on-serious about everything else.

That is probably the best way anyone could have put it.

Annotation to the rules: the need for quoting an article is only for new threads, you don't have to go and insert quotes and links in the threads I just moved over (most of them already have them anyway).

All credit for the idea goes to Fifth although I'd like to point out that I did all the work just now while he ate cheetos and possibly masturbated.

Can thread discussion also expand on specific subjects of discussion, and not solely on the article itself?

For example if a News Article was published talking about Genetic Engineering, is discussion of ethical implications and subjects of a broader scope not truly mentioned in the article allowed to be discussed along side with the content actually inside the News Article?

I don't see why not.

I get the impression that this is basically the new Discussion Subforum, or will be, with two differences.

1. Have to have an article.

2. We can make ridiculous threads so long as it was in the news/current events.

I'm trying to avoid close association to the old Discussion forum so no one thinks they have to keep serious in here at all times, but I'd be lying if I said it had nothing to do with it. However no difference in posting style is intended, it's simply a forum about current stuff the same way the games subforum is about everything related to gaming. I'd put your 2. more like "if a news thread turns ridiculous, that's totally okay and in fact will happen in about 95% of threads."

he ate cheetos and possibly masturbated.

I think we can up that the probably.

I totally had all these crazy news stories to share a week ago but didn't feel they warranted a thread in general. Now I can't remember what they were!

This move I hope does work out; I find a relatively interesting article which isn't funny so it doesn't really fit in the funny link thread, but I don't think it is enough to warrant a full blown discussion about it.

In fact, I'm going to make one now!

- provide an outlet for userbase's propensity to post news stories
- address and resolve repeated requests for a stickied news thread
- annoy Barrelpants

Basically my goal here is to have a forum for people who want to talk about RAEP and torture and war and what an awful bag of shit Joe Lieberman is where that sort of thing can be ignored by the god-fearing masses and where people don't feel obligated to be quite so hella-serious as Discussion tended to be. I thought one positive thing about the Discussion shutdown was that it freed people up to be a little bit jokier and less fervent in tone about some things and would like to preserve that as we move these topics back into their own forum.

Basically the upshot of this is that you shouldn't expect this forum to be policed any differently than General in terms of tone/content/on-topicness/whatever.

I like this setup, because it gives me an out of resorting to "your mother" jokes when proven wrong or inconsistent.

Pretty much exactly what we're hoping for TBH.

Don't you do that, anyway?

In the Discussion forum I sort of felt guilty about just basically repeating other people's comment only with this stupid mock voice so I only did it like 50% of the time.

What's new there exactly? at least the news forum may keep you from suffering scarring images. Like things pertaining to CoM/CoL...unless that ever does make the news for some reason...hmmmm.

You know what, considering it's halloween I have an urge to pay a couple of kids to walk around as the BM and RM and act like lovers. It's really tempting.

That would be an awesome costume. You'd get loads of candy as well, as you could threaten to have sex on their lawn unless they give you another mars bar.

Sorry 'bout the double post, but would an "Epic Journalism" thread be in order? Like, the journalism equivalent of the funny pictures thread? I recently saw a completely serious publication (Spiegel) feature an article about the American space program, which included a picture of the rocket captioned "A triumph in phallic engineering", which really doesn't warrant its own thread, but is awesome enough that it should be mentioned.

Krylo

Why not just put it in the funny links thread?

Geminex

Mostly because I can't find the article online and the magazine is, I am afraid, made of paper. But point taken, it would be unnecessary.

Well now let's not give them too much credit. http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/tt148/fifthfiend/emoticons/smug.gif

e: but yeah I guess the funny pictures thread would be a good enough place for that.
