View Full Version : People outraged at pun-based Halloween costume.

An 'illegal alien' costume has been pulled from shelves.

Story. (http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/10/17/illegal.immigrant.costume/index.html?iref=mpstoryview)

This makes no sense. The costume is saying nothing about the supposedly offended group. A piece of wordplay is the entire concept.

Is there something I'm not getting?

Edit: Looking back, I don't think is this worthy of a topic. I would be fine with someone deleting it. Anyone else think it would be good to have a news sticky again?

Nah it's cool. Can we also use this space to complain about the over-sexification of young girls costumes? It's like costume companies took everything a girl could wear for Halloween and whored it up a notch.

As for the Illegal Alien costume, it can be offensive, but it's not half as offensive as some of the idiotic adult costumes I've seen this year in stores.

And yeah. It's not easy to find a Costume for the ladies that looks good and not like part of the Wardrobe of a bad porno movie.

This just gets me:

"I have a lot of illegal immigrant friends," said Iglesias. "If I showed them that costume, it would really hurt them."

Excuse me? Like, what? Seriously, not only is this guy admitting he's essentially harboring illegals and even bragging about it, but combined the entire tone of "it's okay to be an illegal immigrant," it just burns my biscuits. I know that they're people, too, but they're hiding from the law because they're not supposed to be here.

This probably sounds insensitive, but when there are legal ways to get into the country, I'd really prefer people use them. I have nothing against immigration. That's what America was built upon. On the other hand, I do have issues with people deciding to skip the system entirely. Like, if they want to become a citizen, I really don't care if they show up first, as dumb as that sounds, because they're integrating and basically living the life anyway, and there's really no reason not to grant it through the normal process. I knew a girl named Abby (actually I was attempting to get her to go out with me until I found out she was married :sweatdrop ) whose husband was like that, they got married, and he decided after years of being around and with her newly pregnant that he'd apply for citizenship for the kid. BAM! Deported. That actually angered me when I heard about it, because it left Abby alone with their daughter, they were legally married for a year and no one cared, and the process she described, well, it's actually pretty horrible. Everyone gets lumped into a single file and the decision isn't on a case-by-case basis by any stretch of the imagination and the guy has to wait 10 years before he can even re-apply, sitting and waiting in Mexico and only seeing his family two weeks a year.

I guess you could say I put a line between illegal immigrants and people who very much want to be legal immigrants based on whether they just live here or actually truly want to be Americans for whatever reason.

To bring this around to the topic again, I really don't sympathize with people who are really offended by this, because illegals are still illegals. This is at worst a mildly offensive joke that applies to very little of the population and it irks me that people are being so hyper-sensitive about it, like illegals have some sort of right to be here, which they don't until they cease to be illegal, which I'm totally all for. We should NOT have to worry about being politically correct when it comes to matters that are already incorrect, just like we shouldn't have to defend the KKK if someone shouts "FUCK THE KKK!" just because they're people, too. If someone is doing something wrong, and someone wants to make an issue of it, said someone has a right. Given how harmless this particular instance is, it strikes me that people who have a problem with an alien getup because of a play on words might be a bit hyper-sensitive.

If there was a reasonable way to become a citizen within maybe one... even two years? I'd be right behind you there, blues, but considering your absolute best case to become an actual citizen is six years, with about a year just to get a temporary green card?

The system is bullshit, and I can't hate illegals for trying to circumvent the bullshit system.

I'm going to turn around and agree with that. I knew the system was broken, but I had no idea it was THAT broken. That's just inexcusable and the government needs to get on quintupling or more the resources allocated to this.

I'll get Thadius on it once Operation: New World Order gets underway.

Seriously, I'm hoping we get something done about it as well. What would help is helping the general public to be more informed about the issue. That graphic was a good example of that, and this past year mental-floss ran some good articles summarizing the hot points of the election issues (immigration, healthcare, ect.)

Yeah, but for that one, you can easily say it's Don Quixote or somesuch.
That seems like a good way to get the community of literary critics and researchers up against you.

Yeah I dunno there's two things I'm taking away from this:
a) Halloween costumes are often based on really lame puns
and
b) some people will get up in arms about the most insignificant of things.
Which I both knew.

Anyone else think it would be good to have a news sticky again?
The separate threads do seem to regularly spark conversation. This one in particular seems to be doing okay. I'm not ruling out a stickied news thread but last time we had one we'd still get separate news threads all the time because people would miss the stickied one so I dunno. Plus if something isn't worth a thread it's probably not worth a post either and frankly you should figure that out for yourself before you hit the post button. :)

Are there any more around?
No - Good job.
Are there any French or other non-English colonials around?
Yes - Murderfy them and steal their land taken from natives they murderfied. Any others around?
No - Start revolution, murderfy loyalists and declare independence.

I guess I can see where someone could say you're making light of a serious topic but hell you could say that about all kinds of Halloween costumes. It seems like an oversensitive reaction but I guess I also can't fault people dealing with a pretty awful situation for being oversensitive about it.

In addition to the graphic Krylo posted above I would say that one of the big things about illegal immigration is that to a large degree it's tacitly permitted as a way for businesses to skirt labor laws, which is why the lion's share of punishment for immigration violations are heaped upon the immigrants and not ever the businesses that hire them.

I honestly find this about ten times more offensive then the illegal alien costume.

Remember people, kids from the age of six to forever are not girls.

Well, some of them are, obviously, but they're all lesbians.

EDIT: To be more clear, the illegal alien costume is just a bad pun, whereas there are a few (more than a few, really, especially if you're sticking up for zombie/vampire/werewolf/serial killer rights) costumes like the aforeseen one that do motorcycle backflips over 20 sharks on fire right into the stereotyping category.

It's Halloween. We all (most of us) dress up and act like idiots or generally goof around. It's a fairly light-hearted holiday for funsies. If someone is getting so offended over a harmless costume, maybe they need to grow some fun glands or something.

Or maybe it's ok to dress as Demonic Figures and Whores, but stereotypes are just way too serious to make light of.

EDIT:
"I have a lot of illegal immigrant friends," said Iglesias. "If I showed them that costume, it would really hurt them."

I am trying to look at that in a way that isn't horribly offensive and incredibly ignorant of the situation. Perhaps you could try and convince me it isn't?

On a holiday that's for having fun and being light-hearted!

edit: Yeah, it's too bad they can't get through the legalization process to join us as citizens. I feel for their plights that drove them to seek work and shelter here. They're still here illegally, against the wishes of the People. Saying "I don't really care if it offends them" isn't the same as saying "I don't give a flying shit about their humanity or their struggles" and don't make it out to be.

Against the wishes of what people? You say the People with a capital P like it represents the majority of the American populace, and I can think of very few groups who actively don't want the illegals here, and at least some of those groups are racists.

Saying "I don't really care if it offends them" isn't the same as saying "I don't give a flying shit about their humanity or their struggles" and don't make it out to be.

Awesome putting words in my mouth to say that I'm putting words in your mouth. You pretty much said, regardless of what you may have meant to say, "It's okay if we offend them, because they're Illegals so they shouldn't be here, and it's not like they can do shit about it anyway." You may understand that they have it hard, and you may care about their struggles, but that doesn't change what your post said.

More of "I think we really have more important things to be getting worked about about then then not offending illegal aliens. They're not our citizens." Yeah, I know the citizenship process is stupid and needs reform, but I would STILL hold this same Idea if anyone who wanted it could be a citizen in a week, because Illegal is Illegal. I wish it were easier, then people would have less grounds to stand on complaining about all those "illegal aliens taking all our jobs that we weren't going to do in the first place which is why they hired someone who would do it for almost nothing because they have almost nothing".

No, I don't want illegal aliens here, they shouldn't be here if they're not legally here. Just illegals, that's it. People activly going through the process aren't considered illegal. Just the ones that sneak in and work under assumed names, or false visas, or false greencards, or whatever other illegal means they use to do so.

If I'm wrong for that, then I guess wrong. Not inhumane or uncaring. Just wrong.

Honestly, not really.

I don't buy into that whole "stealing our jobs" bullshit, no one I know or have known has lost a job to an illegal.

Illegal immigrants may have to break further laws to get work or living quarters. A lot turn to gangs or criminal organizations in order to get things they normally couldn't or for ways around the system in order to stay under the radar. Someone has to falsify papers, acquire living areas, grease wheels to get some places to hire them without looking too close.

NonCon

Which is all our fault for having such a shitty system. I don't think we should blame illegal immigrants for the natural outcome of our shitty system.

Marc v1.0
10-18-2009, 07:06 PM
I'm not blaming them. We need to reform the system (I think I mentioned that). We also still don't need people who are here illegally to remain here illegally. If we reform..being here illegally would still cause the same problems and be just as illegal as before a reform, though I doubt it would be as big of a problem as it is now.

There's a reason we have a legalization process, a reason we have laws that define Legal and Illegal Alien, and again I feel for their plight, I feel for their hardship and their pains, but I'm not going to worry and sweat over if I've offended someone who shouldn't be here with a Halloween Costume, and seeking action over it is really a waste of time and money that could be better spent.

If they really gave a shit about the feelings of these people, they'd focus that effort on changing the system, not a frivilous fucking costume.

While I do agree that this seems born out of some kind of ridiculous desire to be 'unoffensive,' when there are outfits that are racially offensive to a ridiculous degree ("I'm gonna be Mexican for Halloween!"), blaming them is exactly what you're doing. Now now, no one's making those leaps of logics or conclusions. It's just seemingly hypocritical to say "I don't care (if I offend you)" alongside the claim "I care (about your struggle)." Also, this isn't a topic to be generalizing in I think. So, instead of saying "I don't care if I offend you," You could say "I don't care if you don't find it funny, because humor is subjective, and humor usually boils down to being offensive anyway," and also, "I Thought I'd make fun; I merely wish to take a serious issue a little more light-heartedly." I mean, you'd still have people arguing, but at least you'd be more thourough.

You mean the one where I rant about how people are getting too politically correct and people need to get over it and not be offended by every little thing, etc.?

I suppose I could provide the full text if you want, but I think everyone has it memorized by now.

I am reminded of the slightly related Penn and Teller episode where they started in a nicely decorated restaurant and just ranted about how various things in the room offended various groups of people in various ways. As each group had a say they removed said offensive items. Within a minute or two they were down to their underwear. And I'm sure some people are offended by underwear so they probably would have had to get naked, but I suppose they drew that particular line there.

I personally believe humour has a place almost anywhere. There is something to be said about tact and context, but I spend at least half of my day turning what I see into a joke.

It is doubly interesting too because in my extremely liberal classes on equity they complain about how political correctness has just gone too far in disguising equity problems, but then turn around and say oh god never make a joke about anybody ahhh it might hurt their feelings!!

To be fair Political Correctness Means "a good idea for a politician/ other public figure" Meaning Something is policitally incorrect when it's really stupid for them to do as it would ruin their career/cripple their business.

The idea the PCragers usually use is " If I say Nigger, I'll get attacked by the lobbyists/ arrested(whichm unless you're trying to incite a riot, WON'T happen), oh noes! THEY BE ATTACKING MA FREE SPEECH!"

THAT Idea, that if you say something, people will say something back, is called Free Goddamned Speech. See, If you act like a dick, I'm allowed to call you one, because this is America, Dammit. If I get all my friends together, and we all call you a dick? still free speech.

Years ago, if a White Straight Male came up to someone and called them something horrible, insulted them, dicked them around, tough luck, unless you want get your head caved in by his buddies and then by the police when they come to file the report. Not quite the same nowadays, and thank god for that.

I find the costume funny because it's a silly spin on a bad pun. It's a cute idea for a stupid Halloween costume and nothing more. There is nothing between the lines to read and get worked up about.

You know what costume would validate the discussion you guys are having here? If it was a Dress with a cord that would drag on the floor with a Baby toy at the end. It's an Abortion costume. There. Someone thought it was funny, and now there is something to talk about.

This one? No. The guy who got mad at it in the article needs to be told to shut the fuck up and stop making trouble for nothing. It's just a stupid costume and it's no more offensive than dressing as Michael Jackson, Elvis, Kurt Cobain or any other dead person...

To be fair Political Correctness Means "a good idea for a politician/ other public figure" Meaning Something is policitally incorrect when it's really stupid for them to do as it would ruin their career/cripple their business.

My recollection was that Political Correct meant things like not calling someone from Vietnam an Oriental, since that's... well, incorrect. A lot of "politically incorrect" stuff was/is intentional slurring. So people who didn't like being called on their show of insulting ignorance did everything they could to turn it around, and here we are.

Pretty sure the "illegal alien" joke/pun has been around forever, it seems pretty late to get mad about it now. Did they boycott Men In Black? Because that made the same joke. They should get it taken off all the movie store shelves.

I actually think our immigration should be fairly porous, especially for people who want to work and live here. If they were swiftly legalized they could pay taxes, and receive minimum wage, too. Getting a green card should certainly be easier, anyway. If they are productive for three years, make them a citizen. I actually could care less if they can pass an exam about American history, since half the people born here can't.

Actually, one could make the case that illegals better serve the country by not becoming citizens, if one wanted to be entirely utilitarian. Illegals DO pay taxes and pay into Social Security without any hope of getting any of it back because they don't have a Social Security Number and therefore no access when they stop working. Overall, you end up with quite a terrible situation where they're employed in shitty jobs with no way of improving their situation paying into a country they'd like to be a part of without much hope of becoming a part in a reasonable amount of time and no hope of getting any support back from it.

I don't want to be utilitarian, I think they should be getting the good things and not just the shaft. If they were citizens they would have to receive minimum wage unless they were working on a farm or in a restaurant, which are the only businesses exempt from that. And when they were 65 they would receive social security like everybody else.

EDIT: Yes, we can only call Fifth a dick. And why dick, exactly? Besides being politically incorrect, you're all being sexist. Why don't we call Fifth a vagina as well?

Incidentally if anyone was wondering why this country's got so many illegal immigrants and so few not-illegal immigrants,

If they were citizens they would have to receive minimum wage unless they were working on a farm or in a restaurant, which are the only businesses exempt from that.

ALSO cause if any of 'em ever mentions things like "overtime pay" or "bathroom breaks" or "union" then HEY mister law enforcement turns out this employee a' mine is here IL LEGALLY whelp ain't that a thing *employee deported*

"I don't care if you don't find it funny, because humor is subjective, and humor usually boils down to being offensive anyway," and also, "I Thought I'd make fun; I merely wish to take a serious issue a little more light-heartedly."

See, I suck at the word stuff.

I'm the guy that would walk up to a girl, wanting to compliment her on her hair and dress today, ask if she'd like to eat lunch, but actually end up just blurting out "DO YOU LIKE BUGS!?"

Technically, I don't think bugs count as "furry" in the same way things like lizards don't, but I don't think they really count as "scaly," either. That's going to bother me now. :/

Macro itself is having a giantess fetish; having a fetish for anthropomorphic bugs is typically considered Macro as well due to size discrepancy.

Mind you that's just what the fur I was talking to in particular said.

Edit: holy crap I have waaaaaaay too wide a knowledge base on fetishes here.

Macro boils down to giants.

Actually, I'm wondering if there's a proper term for bug furries at all. There don't seem to be many examples (albeit with Safe Search on). Maybe there just aren't enough to justify a new word.
