EDIT: He's okay, nothing happened to him.
Balloon boy found safe at home (http://news.ninemsn.com.au/world/876338/six-year-old-boy-floats-away-in-balloon)

EDIT #2: The whole thing was a big hoax. It's okay to laugh now!

Holy hell, that kid must be terrified.

I think the kid is dead. Watching it on the news now.

Edit: He wasn't found in the balloon when it landed.

There are those who might say practicing archery is archaic and has no possible use anymore. Situations like this are why I disagree.

My Brother says the same thing but instead it's jumping really high and using a sword.

Edit: He wasn't found in the balloon when it landed.Sky demons have him now.

But no, I hope it turns out the kid is okay. I know the chances are pretty slim at this point but it'd be nice if it turned out the kid set the balloon loose by accident and then ran off to keep from getting in trouble and just hasn't surfaced yet.

So did this kid really like Up or...

Keep in mind the human body is actually pretty resilient. Even if he fell out somehow, depending on how high he was and what he landed on, it's possible he survived. He might well have some broken bones or other serious injuries, but they need to get on searching the balloon's path and the surrounding areas ASAP if they hope to find him alive.

EDIT: Shit, shit ..... I just turned the TV on ... the aircraft landed, but the kid is still missing! :(

Bet you feel like a dick now, don't you?

I'm assuming he's dead. It's pessimistic of me, but these sort of things rarely turn out well.

So this thing has touched down empty and apparently the only witness to the kid climbing in in the first place was his brother. Call me a cynic but you've all seen Twelve Monkeys, right?

No, actually, but I'm assuming the brother is mistaken somehow or the kids are playing an incredibly cruel prank?

Edit: Okay, I just looked it up and your analogy makes even less sense than before!

Coverage of what they can confirm is sketchy so far. So they are padding it by calling the parents crazy. Less random judgments and more coverage of the actual event, please.

I hope they find him just like, passed out in a field somewhere with a bump on the noggin.

If not, well I hope they just never find him so we can all imagine he simply floated away to a better place. This is really tragic, I don't have much hope for the kid.

In the movie there are news reports of a kid having fallen down a well, and Bruce Willis' character claims to know that there's nobody down the well, that it's just a joke. Turns out he's right because he's remembering it from his past.

If the reference had been to Radio Days, it would have been different.

Aww jeeeze. I'm REALLY hoping they find the kid alright (maybe he jumped out before it could get too high or he ran off somewhere after he landed) because otherwise...

Another article said that it was unlikely that he jumped off. It probably just landed and he walked away to find some city. So this can still have a good ending.

He was at his house.

Well, that's a relief.

The most depressing thing about this is that the second most popular story (behind the actual story about the event) on CNN is about how they were on Wife Swap.

EDIT: But, yeah, it's good that he's safe and all.

I had to explain it to my co-wokers.

I'm really happy for you and am going to let you finish, but Edgar Allen Poe had one of the best balloon hoaxes of all time. Of all time. (http://www.guardian.co.uk/global/2009/oct/20/edgar-allan-poe-balloon-hoax)

Well this was completely unexpected. Balloon boy dad wanted to make money from hoax to build underground bunker to protect himself when the sun explodes in 2012. (http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/World/2009/10/17/11435656-ap.html)

Well, that's true, but it would also make him a batcrap loco with backup enough to DDoS every news site that mentioned it.

It's good to start out on Wife Swap, then move up in the world for a ridiculous hoax, then be painted batshit loco for attention. Reach for the stars, and all that.

Something tells me this guy is just an egotistical prick who has trouble keeping a real job.

I mean I blame the media for this, but he's a total tool.

Children die from neglect every day, why does one floating away in a balloon merit so much attention? They just look for shit that wows people, and assholes like this make money off it.

Oh my friend, the rabbit hole is way deeper than that.

You see... any money this guy makes has to come from somewhere, from someone. And people can't just pay him for what he has done, he needs to make it into a service or product of some kind.

So, this Asshole McToolbox, needs to find Mr. Greedy F. Screwyou, who will use his Turdnection (those are Shitty Connections) in the media to get him to write a Book, host a show, make something that will sell something.

And that's when we hit the gold mine... because nobody is making something to sell if they don't know that someone out there is buying it.

And to buy it, people need to want it, and to want it people need to relate to it and know what it is.

Which means that someone somewhere out there TODAY is thinking about how to make and get cash with this guy and someone somewhere out there TODAY is thinking about how they would "totally buy" crap related to this.

So, if he is an asshole for using his kids like this to make money, what do we say about the people that helps him make money and the people that give him the money?

Funka Genocide

I don't really care that he "used" his kid to make money. (and I use that term loosely because I mean, he put him in an attic for a few hours, it's not like he sold him into white slavery.) I think he's an asshole because he will likely make more money than me this year without doing anything remotely useful to anyone.

Basically he's an idiot that got it in his mind that the world owed him a living, and through some fucked up real life plot twist he'll likely end up cashing out on that assumption.

And the jerk offs that go out and buy his book or how to video are also assholes.

And the fact that I fell for his scam sort of makes me feel like an asshole, which is really just another reason to label him as an asshole.

In fact, can we renamed this thread to "Giant Asshole Gets on TV by Being an Asshole."?

You didn't fell for his scam, none of us did. We made our minds with the information we got. Most of us (all of us?) Knew that there was something "off" with all of this, but still...

The only thing this really does to me is to give me one more Darside point that pushes me into becoming one of these "Life couches" or some other bullshit like that... hell, well do i have to bust myself to make a living if an asshole with a baloon can get a free ride by being an asshole with a baloon?
