Oh look here's CJ with another Metal Gear thread...
But the fanmade non-profit movie Metal Gear Philanthropy came out today and I have to say it is fantastic.

When I was watching it I kept going "I can't believe this is fan-made".
Hint: Keep watching after the credits.

Im 17 minutes in and I think they really need to work on their ADR. otherwise I like it.
That was fucking awesome! Was a bit slow in the beginning and some of the background animation near the start was iffy but otherwise, fucking brilliant. Loved the gunfight scene near the end.
Can't wait for part 2 now.

I hope it doesn't take another three years to make.
The part after the credits had me rolling on the floor laughing. I don't even know why. "Row row row your boat..."

Watched the intro. Alarmingly decent thus far.
Will get into later.

Word of warning, if anyone thinks they can use Realplayer to get around the whole Torrenting thing, don't bother. I downloaded the complete movie with Realplayer & it ends up being a jittery mess. Totally not worth the hour & a half worth of downloading time.
I guess I'll have to figure out how to torrent the thing. Ah well.

Are there any magic boss fights? Because there had better be. I'm not saying they have to be as good as Psycho Mantis or the Sorrow, but I want at least one bad guy with semi-mystical powers.

Okay just finished watching it.
The good: The characters are interesting and I want to see more of the plot unfold. This is both a good and a bad thing since we will most likely be waiting a couple years to see more of the plot. Overall the special effects were impressive for what they were working with. The dialogue was usually pretty good, and there were some lines that got a genuine chuckle from me. The Metal Gear design was fairly cool, as were the designs for Not-Foxhound guy and the Fiend. It felt very much like an MGS game, but in movie form.
The bad: No Otacon. Seriously. That sucks. The intro scene was also pretty weak. The Metal Gear's size seemed to vary, but that may have just been me. They set up so many plot threads that I find it highly unlikely that it will get resolved in the next movie, and this will most likely end up being a trilogy because fuck we don't get enough of those already. All the voice acting is dubbed over, even though I think the actors all speak English, so some lines stand out as not matching the mouths very well.
Overall, it vastly exceeded my expectations, and I greatly anticipate the next one, though I am upset that I have to anticipate it. I'm hoping that this is popular enough that they'll get donations and the like for a greater budget for part two, because I wouldn't mind seeing the special effects improved, and I would also like the lines recorded during the scenes.

I'm pretty sure it was planned as a trilogy. Hopefully they'll be able to film faster this time, since I think for this first part they had to completely start over from scratch.
I would also like the lines recorded during the scenes.
I dunno, because I'm pretty sure a good amount of the character's actors are not the same as their voices, so I don't think they'd be able to do that.
Randomly, I looove the song at the end. I think it's amazing they were able to get that one lady who did the MGS1 ending song to do their song.

Ah, that explains it. I somewhat suspected it halfway through the movie, but then it skipped my mind. Well, then I hope the dubbing improves a little bit.

Well, not exactly. My connection isn't perfect, sometimes I'll stream something like YouTube live, sometimes I have to pause the thing & come back before I can watch it in full. This thing was playing mostly consistent, but had a lot of stop & go. And after about 10 or so minutes, it got really annoying.
Also, given its length, this isn't something I'm going to be able to watch in one sitting. And because of the streaming nature, I can't exactly fastforward to the bit I last saw.
So torrenting is apparently my only option, unless somebody breaks this up into bite sized pieces & loads them into YouTube.
I'm going to try to fiddle with my RealPlayer (http://www.real.com/) download. Worst case scenario, I'll turn what I grabbed into a MP3.

Oh I see, and just turning it on, then pausing it and letting it load doesn't work either? That's a pain. :(

I haven't checked for all of the parts, but it looks like they're all there.
EDITx2: I don't know if they have the extra bit after the credits on there, so here it is:

Ending theme is awesome.
...I really need to download it.
The only thing that depresses me about this fan-made movie is the inevitable knowledge that this piece will be masterful compared to the way Hollywood -- with an infinitely superior budget -- will utterly maim Metal Gear.
EDIT: Also, I'm pretty sure Otacon also kind-of, sort-of appears: I think he's supposed to be narrating that Philantrophy propaganda video in the beginning.

no, I think that's just ADR. you have to understand that while actors, directors, and everyone in film would love to be able to record all dialog on-site during scenes, mother nature is going to have none of that, and in any wilderness-ish area like where this movie was shot, wind and ambient noise will inevitably drown out the dialog. Its not just an indie thing, it happens with big budget movies too - there are just too many things preventing a clean capture in an open air scene. ADR is basically when the actors come back later and lipsynch themselves, and it can have very varied results.

Except two actors were listed for every character, which makes me think that one was the one who played the character and the other did the voice.

Yeah, the old Congressman's voice really didn't seem to match the actor at all.
The French kid's voice was pretty spot-on, though. I liked his 'performance.' And I'll give them some credit for ensuring that Snake did, in fact, sound an awful lot like Snake. (The actor looked too young for the part, though.)
