Ok, I think Im going to DM an online D&D session. All I need now are a few adventurers. Im going to limit this group to:

Standard Races
Standard Classes

We will be using modified house rules, with bits of 3.5 incorporated into them. Any other questions will be discussed on HERE. This is NOT a spam thread, and only serious people need apply. Thanks.

Oh, and anyone wanting to help me DM (in a co-DM role), please PM me.

I'll be the cleric. Every party needs a cleric.

well, you can pick them up at ANY book store pretty much such as Barnes & Noble (http://www.barnesandnoble.com/) or Amazon (www.amazon.com) or your local book store. I mean, the book store where you buy your sci-fi / fantasy books at :D

Well, most of my direct experience with D&D is through playing alot of NeverWinter Nights... I played enough to understand the system quite well, but nonetheless I mayn eed some reminders every now and again.
Anyhow, I'm just reserving my space for now... I'll see what I wanna be and what the party needs when more people sign up...

Can I be in as well? I'd need a little help, but I'm sure I'd do okay once I'm settled in. As for char type, I'll wait till the others have decided then pick... wouldn't want a newbie to D&D picking someone's favorite class when they could just learn whatever is leftover....

Just got a call from a friend to go out and eat lunch, so I will be back as soon as I can to discuss things some more

Neverwhere
11-24-2003, 02:59 PM
Alright. I will post the necessary stuff. Im going to attach a temporary "Character sheet". Actually, go here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/20030718b) and download the character sheet, then email me @ brian-engel@uiowa.edu your sheet. For ease, I will allow this: either roll out your stats (there are 6 stats, so roll 4d6 6 times and drop the lowest score each time and add the three remaining dice together to get a stat) or you can use 75 points and distribute them as you wish. Reply away.

Also, you can have multiple characters in the same class! I.E. 2xFighters, 4xWizards, etc

Blasphemous
11-24-2003, 03:00 PM
Since I don't really feel like being a tank, I guess I'll be a Rogue...
One of my problems with D&D is that I don't seem to actually like any class or any race... It's a problem I've always encountered during character creation. =/

EDIT: Neverwhere, which Char Sheet do you want us to use? You attached one and told us to download another. =X

Neverwhere
11-24-2003, 03:05 PM
Oh. Yeah, the other was for more of the "official" type and it has the skills on it. I would prefer that one, but I was supplying the other for those of you who are having trouble dloading the one off of Wizards Site. Thanks for clearing that up.

[Edit]

Ok, here is the current list of people partaking in this D&D Session along with their proclaimed classes:
Dante - Cleric
lilwhitemage - ?
Metacide - Ranger
Tor - Bard
Blasphemous - Rogue

Shid, that looks SO much better in textpad ... puuh...

3rd ed, or v3.5 character sheet?

EDIT: Took me over twenty minutes to get this message submitted. No kidding. Anyhow, it's already almost 23:00 here, and I have some sleeping to catch up on, so I'll be back after school tomorrow, which is in about 16 hours from now...

Neverwhere
11-24-2003, 03:38 PM
Please use 3.5 sheet if your not going to use my abbreviated one.

[Edit]
For those of you who choose to use my abbreviated Character Sheet I will be keeping hard-copies of your characters on the 3.5 sheets with me. So, if you feel so enclined, you can save me the trouble (hint hint, wink wink) of making these by submitting the data to me via text file alread layed out in 3.5 sheet format. Thanks!

Mikorlias Zard

I have 3.5 ed D+D books (the 3 core rulebooks, the Epic Lvl Book, the Fiend Folio and Tome&Blood and Masters of Wild) and methinks I'll play as a Ranger (elven obviously), as I hardly ever do and the 3.5 Ranger rocks. Plus I have Masters of the Wild, so YAY!

No wait, looking at current peeps in game, I'll be a Barbarian, because they are a good TANK class and, heck, they're in Masters of the Wild too. No TANKS yet. Plus, change my race to... ur... Dwarf. Dwarves are good Barbarians, I'll come up with a storyline reason WHY a Dwarf is a Barbarian later, but not now, am too tired. ;)

No time to write stats now, how are we rolling ability scores? IMHO The more dice the better ;)

Mikorlias Zard (not very dwarvish is it, Mikor Redbeard of the Zard Clan/Tribe sounds better!)

Neverwhere
11-24-2003, 05:22 PM
Look above at my post on how to create: either roll out your stats (there are 6 stats, so roll 4d6 6 times and drop the lowest score each time and add the three remaining dice together to get a stat) or you can use 75 points and distribute them as you wish.
meaning: a 4,3,4,6 would be (dropping the 3 since it is the lowest) 14.

Shid... good call! Everyone add one if your using my sheet! Btw, want to join us Zard?

Did I not say already that I would? Perhaps you did not pick up on that, never mind. I will be playing as Mikor Redbeard, the Dwarf Barbarian, as there are no tank characters in the game yet that I can see. Although there look to be an abundance of Charisma type characters, so I don't think I'll need to worry about that stat (Dwarves -2 CHA, Barbarians generally have not much CHA anyway, thus- don't get me to talk to anyone.)

BTW- Anyone can play as any class, for example: Both Dante AND LilWhiteMage can be Clerics if they want. Or one could be a Druid, as that's like a Cleric, but getting powers from nature, rather than a God/Goddess. Clerics are probably better healers, and can turn undead, plus can last longer in a fight due to better armour, but Druids have more offensive spells and have a bunch of cool nature-type special abilities, including, of course, Wild Shape.

I have the 3.5 books, so I'm fine with character creation and stuff. I think I'll use the Wizards Char Sheet though.

Oh yeah, and what Gods are we using? Standard D+D (which, IMHO, are somewhat lacking) or Forgotten Realms, or a different one?

Gods are any and all out of Deity's and DemiGods (I think thats the name of the book... pretty sure it is..). So its pretty much what ever you come up with, or you can submit your own God

Dante
11-25-2003, 11:46 AM
New God - Black Mage (Domains - Magic, Madness, Destruction)

Greater Deity of Real Ultimate Power, alignment chaotic evil.

Favored weapon: Knife

Worshipped by many in another dimension, the god known only as Black Mage is a figure of inexplicable mystery and awesome power. Along with his fellow deities Fighter, Red Mage, Thief, Black Belt and White Mage, they form a pantheon known only as the "8-Bit Theatre".

His worshippers are expected to embrace destructive magic, stab stupid people in the back, and chase all hot young clerics they encounter.

Further more: about dice. Could someone describe the meanings of dice. I dont have any special dice exept the tipical 6 sided one

Neverwhere
11-25-2003, 12:46 PM
the other dice are for other things. Ill give a quick overview

D4: Four sides (duh). Used for most cantrips/low damage spells (i.e. mm). Also used for low damage weapons (i.e. dagger)
D6: Yeah...
D8: Eight-Sides (duh). Used for slightly higher damage rolls. Cant think of any weapons offhand, but its there. Trust me.
D10/Percentile Dice: Ten-Sides (Duh). Bases for D&D. Used for inititive, axes, treasure, random encounters, and just about anything else the DM thinks warrents a roll.
D20: Twenty Sides (duh). Attack rolls and extremely high damage. Can be used instead of multiple dice when the multiple dice add up to a multiple of twenty. That method is not recommended, as it will, for the most part, give off less damage than actually rolling out the lower dice. Rolling 3d20 vs 10d6 will, on average, give less damage. Nobody rolls low on a d6 that often.

Any other questions post here.

As for the aristocrat, make the character and Ill figure something out.

Mikorlias Zard
11-25-2003, 03:22 PM
I've created 100 Deities for my campaign setting, and I picked out this one for my Dwarf Barbarian...

Name: Vay'sharak
God of: Rage, Anger producing strength etc.
Alignment: CN
Domains: Chaos, Strength, War, Destruction
Fave Weapon: Greataxe

Typically Barbaric don'tcha think?

Any objections?

No?

That's fine then.

Sorry, straight up rules arent going to be in here. I will post a complete list of my 'House Rules' on the thread that starts off the RPG. I always use 'House Rules' and they are, in my opinion, for the betterment of the game.

[Edit]
Regards about the Psion character (sorry I forgot this). I would prefer you to not be a psion, but if you choose to be, then I will have to come up with a way to introduce you (Im willing to do so). So, basically, yeah. Go for it. Level 1-4 characters please!!!

Well, I decided not to. I allready have one RP where I have a character who owns a colony. Why make a nother one. Now i'v got a sorceress.

But it certanly seems you can. But why be a commoner or an addept (What is that?)

Cyclone231
11-27-2003, 09:59 AM
Why, because good roleplaying involves lesser characters fighting greater foes. A level one group taking on two CR 1 monsters and winning is the PRIME of roleplaying. Roleplaying is outthinking, outwitting, outrunning and outsmarting the opponents. To beat unlikely odds with obvious reason is the tip of roleplaying. It is the top of the bellcurve, going down into hack-and-slashing or moronic actions. Roleplaying is to play a role. A challenge is fun, correct? Then isn't the challenge of a weak character to beat foes unlikely? And if it is a challenge, why not? I didn't, because I already had an idea for a character, but I see no reason not to. Playing the role of a weak character with a lot of challenges, would therefore be the funnest, right? Unless, of course, you're a munchkin or hack-and-slasher.

cruelty13
11-27-2003, 12:28 PM
If I GM there basicly never is any hack-and-slash. Our group has been playing for half a yer now, almost every saturday of sunday. We have only had about 4 battles, in one we had a hole army, that moved one row at a time. Oh, and by the way, we change GM's.

Mikorlias Zard
11-27-2003, 02:14 PM
Level 1-4 characters eh? Hmm... I'll go level 3 methinks...

Shall I use the NPC guide in DMG to get an idea of starting equipment?

Oh and, by the way, will we be able to take Prestige Classes in this? Assuming we get to high enough levels anyway. I speak not for myself, of course, as prestige class options for Barbarians are horrifically limited. The only ones that spring to mind are...

-The Forsaker: Which involves giving up ALL magic, including potions of healing (:wmage: -"I like Healing"), and not letting your companions use magic on you (:bmage: -"Which could be a good idea..."), which I utterly REFUSE to do. Sure, the benefits are nice, but... but... magic items are shiny. ;)

-The Eye of Grummsh: Oh yeah, sure, a Dwarf being a devoted worshipper of an Orcish deity... great.

-Exotic Weapons Master: No. Just no. Possibly the worst prestige class I've ever seen. Is it the fact that it takes 3 levels to reach Exotic Weapon Proficiency (in a whole loada weapons you'd never use)? Or is it the pathetic attempt at a unique ability in 'Improvised Weapons'? Or is it the fact that they only have Craft and Profession as class skills? Whatever it is, they are truly not worth playing.

So yeah, answers please Neverwhere, oh almighty DM of DMingness.

Mikor Redbeard of the Zard Clan.

There are two prestige classes I'm interested in...

3.5E DMG mentions a spellcaster who advances in both arcane and divine casting classes at the same time. The only catch is that you must be able to cast 2nd level arcane and divine spells. Would this be acceptable?

The second one is the arcane trickster, who is essentially is mage-thief. This one is from Song and Silence. Acceptable?

I don't think you'd be able to get the first. I think that you need to be a second level wizard and a second level cleric, and he said it's 1-4 level only.

Mikorlias Zard
11-28-2003, 01:43 PM
I think Dante meant (and I know I meant) prestige classes to pick up after having picked up more levels during the course of the campaign, not to start with.

Arcane Trickster also appears in Tome&Blood, as well as the 3.5 DMG, so it gets around.

I'll have my sheet done soon, honest!

multiple as in two characters controlled by you? No.
multiple as in two characters of the same class? Yes.

Everything else will be handled by me (and if I can find myself another person willing to do the creative side of things with me). I dont want people playing 5 characters at a time. Might as well be the dm yourself then too  Just stick with one if you please.

In response to the question below, not that I know of yet. Ive only received about 3 sheets so far (only one well done I might add), and they dont overlap. However, if the others get around to it there might be mage/thief overlaps.

Dante
11-29-2003, 05:08 AM
Feats are special abilities you gain every three levels. Most require a certain ability score or other feats in order to be taken, and they vary in their effects.

For example a fighter with the Whirlwind attack feat could attack everybody within five feet of him once per round. A wizard with the Maximize Spell metamgic feat can cast his spells to maximum effect (i.e. 10d6 becomes 60).

dang, i wish i would have gotten here early enough to join you guys. I would have been an Orc Paladin Lawful Good Alignment, or baring that, a human paladin that thinks he's an orc.

edit - *reviews the previous pages more throughly* oh, it looks like i might still be able to join, w00t. Well now, lets see what i can do with this character sheet. One question, do we start with any feats? I'm gonna start doing searches for 3.5 d&d stuff so i'll get the character half right.

Gato, Id be glad to have you. Yes, you can goto level 1-4 so up to 4 feats (if your straight fighter) 2 for normal char, and 3 for human.

Crulety, yes, i got your char.

Ok, here is what im going to do. As this thread is 91 (my post #) long, I will have to make a new thread. However, I want one reply from everyone answering these questions if you please (reply on this thread until the mods close it... unless they will be nice enough to not close it till after this)

1. How do you want to do this? Post on a set day (i.e. Saturday/Sunday) or post whenever possible?

2. How big do you think a party should be? (Dont mind me, I will determine this on my own. I just want people's opinions)

3. How long do you think we should do this for? A few levels, long time, medium, what?

4. Rolling will be done by you for a little while. However, if I feel you arent being honest with your rolls I will take this priv away from you. My question is this, how many of you do not have a set of dice and want me to do their rolling?

please answer in a timely fashion. Im currently working on a list of house rules to be used in addition to the normal 3.0 rules.

GatoFiero

1. I think we should set a day

2. I have no preference for group size.

3. Atleast good quest.

4. I though i would use my calculator's random program. I was just going to set it to randomly select any # between 1 and 6, 20, ect...

LilWhiteMage
12-01-2003, 01:53 PM
1. I think it might be easier for us to have a set couple of days when we do this. That's just my personal opinion though >_>

2. Seeing as how I've never played before, I wouldn't know the exact size of an ideal party. o_o

3. I think we should play for as long as we can.

4. Even if I had the dice, I wouldn't feel right (because really... how would you know I wasn't lying?... not that I would.. but still.) So my answer is... please roll dice for me ^^;

cruelty13

1. Every day and when you can. I hate comics for not uśing this method and only arriving once in a week.
2. 3 people. My own experience of half a year, but in a Online RP I rally dont know

3. FOREVER

4. Roll mine also.

1. A set day would be a good idea, sundays work best for me
2. a party shouldnt be much bigger than 4 people,
3. Till we get tired of playing, so lets say long term for now.
4> i have my own sets of dice.

uhh if i hate this then i will drop out overwise i will play untill my eyes are strained and my fingers numb
I dont know what dice i need for d&d so this is what i have:- lots of D6 bout 5 d10 (one marked with tens) and 1 d8. apart from that im usless
also beacause im new to d&d i will need promting as to how many dice to roll, and if possible it would be nice if for the first battle peeps could explain why they are rolling what so i can pick it up

1. Weekends is good for me.

2. The party should have 4 characters minumum and 8 maximum (I know that's pushing it a bit, but we have a lot of people playing this.

3. We should continue for as long as it is interesting.

4. I have sufficient dice, I'll roll my stuff.

Alright, based upon the info here is what Im going to do:

1. Weekends
2. 4-8
3. Minimum of one good quest, maybe more.
4. You roll (except where stated). I will determine if I think you are lying to me about your rolls, I will do all the rolling. So dont lie! :D Ill post the information later (im at work, so no access to it) on where/when we/you are starting. Meetings of the characters will be up to you though!!

Well, Im going to combine RP and H&S in this. So yes, your meeting and where you go to get what quest will depend entirely upon your group of players. 1. How do you want to do this? Post on a set day (i.e. Saturday/Sunday) or post whenever possible?

Saturday/Sunday is good. I'm not really free on weekdays, (damn work) so weekends are t3h best.

2. How big do you think a party should be? (Dont mind me, I will determine this on my own. I just want people's opinions)

Four is minimum, six is okay, but ten is just right out the window... 8 or 9 max.

3. How long do you think we should do this for? A few levels, long time, medium, what?

As long as you feel like it needs to go.

4. Rolling will be done by you for a little while. However, if I feel you arent being honest with your rolls I will take this priv away from you. My question is this, how many of you do not have a set of dice and want me to do their rolling?

There is this program called DiceMage that can roll up to 30 dice at once, d4/d6/d8/d10/d12/d20, add or subtract numbers from the result and drop the highest or lowest dice. I have it. If anyone wants the linky...

So, will we be meeting each other in this thread and gaming in Never's new one, or start it all fresh in the new one?

Also,
1)Weekends/evenings are best for me, still in school
2)I've found that a PARTY (at least IRL) is too bulky past 6 players, and too death-prone below 3. However, if all accounted for know what they're doing, I've had an 8-group go great. We split into two mini-groups, and a little friendly rivalry ensued.
3)Until we get bored, fat-and-lazy, or die. I hope the third one happens first.
4)Have my own dice, and a dice program, feel free to take over my rolling if need be, but, like all semi-paranoid slightly eccentric gamers, they're MY DICE! MINE! My...precious...

Dante

I wonder how many will die when we meet our first major enemies?

Depends on what our first major enemy is... If Neverwhere is a kind and merciful DM, our first major foe will be the Archmage "Loose-Bowels" Wozley the Milksop in his Enchanted Item Warehouse. In such a case we will all come out with enough gold to buy our own countries, along with epic-level magic items.

If Neverwhere is a ruthless and cruel DM, he will subject us to Dominara the Erinyes' Nine-Layered Brothel of Violent Emasculation (No Slaking... or Slating... allowed). In which case we are best advised to roll up new characters and *not* think about the old ones.

Seriously though, with two clerics in a team, there shouldn't be a lot of fatalities... the emphasis here is on shouldn't. Unless the encounter is overpoweringly tough, we should be able to squish the BBEGs provided there is good strategy.

Minkus
12-05-2003, 11:46 AM
Out of curiosity, who do we have with experience, and who's a newb, to DnD at least.

Also, with a group this large, we could easily split up if need be. Granted, if we're fighting Young Red Dragons right off the bat that's a no-no, but if, going by your 'size tweaks' comment, Never, we take on hunge versions of enemies not quite as...adventurer-hating...we will be fine.

Another thought.
2 clerics
2 tanks
3 magi
1 bard
2 multis
1 rogue

...umm...we could fill a small tavern by ourselves, and overrun the town guard of a thorp. Anyone else think this is kinda funny?

Come on now Dante, that's not fair. You just KNOW there's no way Never could challenge us with THAT party. And now I've jinxed it, and we're all going to die 5 posts into the adventure.

Even more thinking (crap, I need to quit doing that). Would it be better to have some pre-determined realtionships, such and Cyclone and I growing up on the streets together, or the the wizzies being from the same academy, or will that lessen the RP aspect?

The Terrasque (only one I know of) is a massively powerful creature. First, overcome the fact that it is immune to almost all magics. Then, it can shoot magic right back at you, a "mirror" kinda thing. AC/Attacks are insane, and it has to be reduced to -30 to be "dead". Psycho regen, and a wish is required to actually "kill" it. But it's not all bad, you can get dwarves to forge half-a dozen bucklers +5 for you, you can create very nice gems from it, and you will have saved the world, or part of it, from becoming wasteland. Oh, on the up-side, there's only one...sages hope.

The Torrasque (note the "o") is from Starcraft, and is the hero version of the Ultralisk. For those of you who aren't familiar with that game, it's one of the races main land tank, in powered-up form.

I've seen many variations on spelling and heard different pronunciations, but all seemed to be referring to either one of these....correct me if wrong, please.

Cast a time-warp spell and send it to the end of time?

Dante
12-05-2003, 01:07 PM
No... Without casting a single spell on it, remember...

Use a Trap the Soul Spell, cast it on a gem, let a summoned minion carry it, then when Tarrasque eats the minion (this will be very easy, the problem is getting it to stop ...) Tarrasque's soul gets trapped and you gain mucho XP.

Only dwarves/half-orcs need apply at the bar thing :D). Be creative, as being creative will result in xp gain of one sort or another. When I dm this, im going to be encouraging RP, and best way for that is to award some xp for it. Stupid posts like 'am I getting drunk? Roll to see if Im getting drunk!' is not rp and will actually result in a loss of xp. Now, if you want to see my house rules, go here (http://forum.nuklearpower.com/showpost.php?p=5323&postcount=11). OOC: Har har har... I'll jump the gun...

It was a hot night in the old town tonight... at least, it seemed that way to Abigail. Although it was as cool a night as any other, the combination of the heat of the fair and the sweater-like nature of the full plate he wore under his tunic was making him sweat like a dog, and the cool armor spell he'd cast this afternoon had worn off. Worse still, he'd only prepared one of them, and he really didn't feel like meditating now.

There was simply too much fun to be had.

Abigail wound through the crowd at the fair, picking his way through the drunks and admiring the young women. As he made his way to the center of the fair, he raised his eyebrows as he saw the various multitides of people filling the streets. Though there were mostly humans, he could make out several half-orcs, a dwarf or two, and even an elf standing in the corner and wrinkling his nose in disgust at the pool of vomit that an inebriated reveller had deposited at his feet.

Then he saw her, and he forgot everything else.

She was a young-looking half-elf wearing the robes of a cleric, not unlike that of the order in the local temple. Abigail immediately put all thoughts of cruising through the fair out of his mind. That would still be around for a couple of days.

She, however, might disappear at any moment.

Eagerness added speed to his footsteps, and that made the subsequent collision of his with the unkempt dwarf's helmet that much more painful. He winced from the pain - it felt like he had walked into a rock, albeit a very pointy rock with a helmet.

"Dammit! Stop blocking me, dwarf!"

OOC: Feel free to censure me if this doesn't live up to your expectations...
