Also: Isn't this show over yet? A show about Superman where the best part os Lex Luthor and his father, and now both are gone and/or dead. Why isn't this over?!
They managed to crap over the entire Superman history in a timeline before he became Superman. That is no small feat...

They are also bringing Metallo, Zodd and the Wonder Twins this season... thus why i can't shake the question of "why isn't this hell over yet?"

It's something to do with him becoming superman, but that he wouldn't suddenly come up with the superman costume that we all recognise so instead he's going to try out other costumes before smallville finally dies.
It's been switched to fridays now though, so it might die soon...hopefully.

I've just been honestly wondering how he gets the S.
Like, did he fall in some ash while going to a Matrix cosplay convention? Or maybe he's like "This is my new logo" and therefore buttfuck the original continuity of Superman? That last one is pretty in-line with Smallville thus far.

And then DC will retcon Superman so that the "S" was never his family crest, just something he made up in a drunken stupor.

Pretty sure the S was burnt on to his chest within the first season or two. I sometimes wonder how they're going to go from this to the red and blue, though I soon remember I'd have to watch the show to find out and quickly realise I don't care.

This is probably referencing the supposedly "awesome" darker version of Superman that they were bandying about a lot in different treatments before Superman Returns was decided upon/made. One of those variations had Superman wearing a black-and-white costume reminiscent of his outfit in the alternate reality Justice Lords thing (if anyone watches Justice League).
I think it's pretty stupid and further cements this show as "that show you watch once in a while when nothing else is on and the plot doesn't make any sense because you missed the last four episodes but y'know nothing else is on and its vaguely related to Superman you guess".
I mean, I keep better track of Legend of the Seeker reruns than new episodes of this show, so that speaks to how little I care about this one.

I remember back when Smallville was fun to watch and even funner to make fun of. Like when they had a streak of 'Monster-of-the-week' episodes, or just the 'so bad it's good' moments. The lows gave my inner nerd something to critique and the highs gave me hope for what would, I thought, become an awesome story that had a defined beginning, middle and end.
And then somewhere around Season 4 they took a nosedive and never turned back. Probably about the time that the killed Jonathan Kent

Yeah, I had hope for it at first as kind of a fun little "This is what it was like for Superman as a highschooler" show, that acted as slice of life episodes for a super powered kryptonian just trying to fit in, that eventually segued into the actual origin story... then they fucked everything up.
Though, I pretty much figured it would be stupid when they had Lex Luthor going to his highschool.

I still say that from the moment in the first episode when Clark jammed his arm into a woodchipper to prove how unfair it is that he can break woodchippers with his bare arms it was clearly a show bound and determined to choke itself to death on its own angst.

Yeah, but you have to admit that episode gave us the greatest moment in TV history:
Clark decides to tell lana he's an alien, so he calls her and tells her to dress warm and come over because he's going to show her something she'll never forget. They go to the fortress and blah blah blah she dies, so clark jumps into a time machine that only works once to save her. so far so lame. but the time machine takes him back to the spot just after he called her, and he decides to break up with her to 'save' her. so the modified timeline went something like this:
Clark: Hey Lana, come over the farm and dress warm, I'll show you something you'll never forget.
Lana dresses warm and comes over, excited for the surprise.
Clark: Lana, we shouldn't see each other any more. Goodbye.
BEST. BREAKUP. EVER.
I'm not sure if I could come up with a shittier way to break up with somebody if I tried.
In terms of great TV, this episode is only rivaled by that time that Peter Petrelli accidentally erased that Irish chick from the universe.

It looked cool though. Although I actually threw in with the exact same 'this show's gonna suuuuuck' opinion from the beginning and even until season 1 was coming to a close. Once I actually watched season one in it's entirety, I bought the first 3 seasons on DVD.

I remember liking it at one time but then I missed an episode or whatever and it was impossible to follow because they'd dropped the "monster-of-the-week" format in favor of some crazy stuff involving the Phantom Zone and evil alternate dimensional Kryptonian demons sent by Lord Xenu to stimulate the thetans or something. And like the Green Arrow is in it regularly now? I think he was cooler than Kent by virtue of actually having a costume, and one similar enough to the comic (though edgy with sunglasses and a hood or whatever), not something that looks like a badass longcoat but fails in that the guy within it is not badass.

My favorite part about Smallville is how apparent it is that none of the writers have the first clue about how computers work. Or rather they would, if computers were magic.
It's insane how much the script consists of: "[FULL RECAP OF WHAT HAS HAPPENED] and that means [BAD THING WILL HAPPEN], so I'll just [TECHNO JARGON] until you can [PUNCH BAD GUYS / NOT DO ANYTHING]."
And that's not even touching on the Superman element.

The reason for canceling the Graysons was that it "wasn't in line with [WB's] current view of the future of the property," i.e. people want stuff about Batman not Robin, and they want it to be dark and not upbeat like Smallville [used to be].
And now with Smallville they're going dark when people probably want stuff with Superman to be a little more upbeat.
They seem to keep trying to do the opposite of what they should. I'm glad they indefinitely postponed/canceled the Graysons because a pre-parental death Dick Grayson solving crimes with a traveling circus is a pretty lame idea.

Dick Grayson, Age 12, should not get a show by any means. Dick Grayson, Age 20-Something, as an independant Nightwing would kick ass.
They could also go with the Flash. I would love to see an episode where has to deal with super speed without all the secondary powers. It would be an intelligent way to limit his powers and create some tension.
Smarty McBarrelpants
09-17-2009, 04:39 AM
Without the secondary powers he could probably only go about 50 kph or so before he started doing himself damage. So basically he could set some running world records. And that probably about it.

Okay, maybe just the secondary powers that keep him from killing himself. And we do not talk about the Speed Force and all that stupidity.
Smallville really needs to get back towards its roots. Just focus on how Clark uses his powers and how that screws with his life. No French/Chinese witches, secret organizations, or, ugh, bio-super power suits. If they had it on for Lana that bad, they could have come up with another reason to power her up. The only reason that they're mostly white is because actors of other races have much more self respect than the entire cast of Smallville. Welling was in Cheaper by the Dozen, Durance was in an Uwe Boll movie, and Witwer had a bit role in gamer and was the voice and face of Vader's Apprentice. No self respect... well, Witwer got a cool job at least once.
I think Live Wire has the potential for a cool interpretation.

Hold on while I look this up...
Yeah, nope, see, an android is a full robot built to look/act like a human.
A (non-android) robot is like the ford assembly line robots.
A cyborg is a combination of human and robot parts.
As that metallo has a human brain, he, technically, falls under cyborg. I guess you could make an argument that he's SO MUCH robot now that he'd fall more toward android, but ehhhhhhhh. Human parts = cyborg so far as I'm concerned.

Oh god. After Supernatural went to commercial last week, a friend of mine saw a promo that tried to paint Smallville as "dark." *shudder*
.............
Fine! I watch Supernatural and I don't care who knows!!

I watch Legend of the Seeker so I certainly can't call you out on liking Supernatural...well maybe I can, seriously, you watch Supernatural? Even I don't watch that, and I watch Legend of the Seeker! :D

Tons of, uh, normal people watch Supernatural and at the very least we're on the same level as Legend of the Seeker!
And we're all above those damn Gossip Girl fans.
Back to Smallville, is there any chance that the writers are gonna be able to pull this out of the rubbage bin?

Supernatural is awesome. It might just be that they used 'Don't fear the reaper' in an episodes, or their use of 'Renegade' by Styx in another but really if I had to put it down to anything it'd be that the storyline isn't stupid and doesn't make me cringe. The characters are very angsty though.
I stopped watching Smallville though because, while the main character is as angsty, the storylines were stupid and made me cringe.

True.
I guess it is pretty gray area on that.
Whatever, the important part is Metallo has a chunk of Kryptonite for a power source and is awesome.
Man, remember when Superman fought Metallo in that old Lois and Clark TV show?
Superman eventually figured out that while getting close to Metallo horribly rapes him, Metallo couldn't jump. So he hovered out of reach and used his heat vision.
The creators of Metallo's body regretted not installing super leaping ability.
Hilarious.

I would give you my kidneys AND eat my hat if you could provide a link for that.
And we don't need Clark getting raped. It would probably be hilarious at the moment but they would probably use it as an excuse to dial-up the angst...
Screw it, they should do it anyway.
