Sony just gave up the rights (Troubling news concerning Spectacular Spider-Man) to produce television Spider-Man, in exchange to make more movie Spidey.

With Spectacular Spider-Man just finishing up its 2nd season on Disney XD, I suppose that Disney could consider producing another season, but that isn't exactly a given. Even after that, I don't see them footing the bill for the same animation quality, writers & VAs. Then again, I could be wrong.

This article (http://blog.newsarama.com/2009/09/02/sony-loses-spectacular-spider-man-rights/) puts a slightly better spin on it, & includes a bit of info from Weisman's blog & some news IGN was able to get out of him (Weisman).

But... I liked Spectacular...

I never thought I'd say this, but my continued happiness rests on Disney's shoulders.

Dammit Sony.

Honestly, I would think they'd be more apt to throw a bigger budget at it. Disney is made of money and looking to expand their appeal among male viewers (which is precisely why they bought Marvel in the first place), so it only makes sense that they'd be interested in funding what I assume is a decently successful show featuring a well-known, popular property.

It seems doubtful that they'd have bothered to claw back the animation rights if they didn't have some sort of meaningful Spidey animation plans, the only real question is how Spectacular those plans turn out to be.

In whichever case I'd still rather have had an entire superhero universe with the Gargoyles as its core family (http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/search.php?rid=837) but whatever will be will be I guess.

So, I assume you mean something like the recent Gargoyles/Spectacular Spider-Man radio play, right?

that cast actually has some of the higher up VAs

anyways I am actually hopeful. Back in the day Disney made awesome animated series. They haven't recently, but we know they are atleast capable of doing it.

Yeah, the Radio play comes from the recent Gathering of the Gargoyles (http://www.gatheringofthegargoyles.com/g2009/) convention. I'm assuming Greg wrote it & convinced all the VAs who were attending the convention anyway, to take part. Sorry about Part 3 & 4 not working. I admit, I didn't check on them prior & they've been apparently made private. I'm checking YouTube now to see if I can find them elsewhere.

Regarding the Gargoyles bit... what, no Xanatos (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttB3neLvNCo)?

Actually, this is rather nice that Sony dropped the rights to produce more of the Spectacular Spider-Man considering how Disney now owns Marvel. I was talking with some friends (one of which is a huge comic book nerd) about why Disney would buy Marvel and the most logical conclusion we came up with was Disney needed shows to bring back the male audience to the Disney channel which is pre-dominatly female oriented at the present.

I see this as a very welcome sign.

Disney Channel's focus has been so extremely pinpointed at preteen-teenage girls for so long that the bubble probably burst.

24 hours of "OMGTWEENSHENANIGANS!" prooobably didn't get as much money Disney wanted.

DisneyX D(stupid smiley face) is basically Disney for dudes, though. I mean, X-Men, Spiderman, Spectacular Spiderman, pretty much all versions of the Power Rangers, and Gargoyles late at night?

I watched that shit all the time.

I think they took Batman and Superman TAS off Saturdays and Sunday nights, though. Not a cool move, Disney!

But yeah they have the comic book shows at the moment, it seems.
