Pakistan reality TV contestant drowns in challenge

A contestant on a Pakistani reality TV show drowned while performing a challenge for the program, a spokeswoman for the show's sponsor said Sunday.

Pakistani contestant Saad Khan, 32, was swimming across a lake while wearing a 15-pound (7-kilogram) backpack when he called out for help and then disappeared underwater, according to Fareshte Aslam, information officer for Unilever Pakistan, the show's sponsor.

Horrified co-contestants and crew rushed to try to save him but could not find him in the murky waters of the lake in the Thai capital of Bangkok, where the show was being filmed, according to Aslam, who was recounting reports of those on the scene.

Divers later recovered the body of Khan, she said.

The death came during filming of the show's 10th episode on Aug. 19, but it was not publicized until Khan's body was returned home to the southern Pakistani city of Karachi.

Thai police were investigating to determine whether the death was an accident or caused by negligence, Bangkok's Kom Chad Luek newspaper reported earlier this month. Police could not be contacted Sunday to say if the investigation had been completed.

Unilever Pakistan accepts no liability for Khan's death, Aslam said, but added that the company is in discussions to provide for Khan's wife and four children "out of rightness."

A close friend of Khan's, Babar Jumani, said by telephone that the family was not ready to talk to the media, and he declined to comment further.

Khan had already been eliminated in the as-yet-unnamed show's previous rounds, but had returned for a special challenge to earn a spot in the finals.

Plans to air the reality show -- intended as a promotional tie for Unilever's Clear shampoo -- were on hold. Aslam said Unilever Pakistan, a division of the multinational soap and cosmetics maker, was not involved in the production of the show, which was handled by a director and crew from the Indian entertainment capital of Mumbai.

Reality television shows often subject contenders to harsh physical challenges.

In May, a contestant of the Bulgarian version of "Survivor" died of a heart attack while filming on an island in the Philippines. Noncho Vodenicharov, 53, collapsed after finishing an unspecified activity for the contest, Philippine police said.

This topic isn't necessarily about this piece, but i put it here because it helps illustrate what i think of Reality TV.

Isn't this fad dead yet? Hell... people keep going to these shows because they think it will make them famous our help them succeed in life somehow. I can even understand some of these contestants using their fame to boost other careers outside of TV. And good for them, let them enjoy... no problem!

But, c'mon... enough is enough with the "reality TV". Hundreds and hundreds of contestants have been trough several shows that pick "winners" mostly based on charisma, looks, luck or outright manipulation by the TV station via editing of the show.. very few of these shows are actually based on skill or set to teach something... anything to the people who are part of it, viewers AND participants.

So, this is just one more brick to "why i don't watch TV except for movies and series" wall...

I won't even touch that much on the "Reality" part. That just not true.

I can't stand most reality shows. Mostly because it turns out that interesting and thought-provoking narration and commentary can't be provided by your average idiot off the street.

Also because my ultimate goal in life is to write my own television show, and scripted drama tends to be less likely to be picked up than cheapass reality tv.

Good news. Big Brother is ending soon after their next 'season'.

The only good reality show was The Mole, shame it only had 2 seasons. Everything else is crap and always has been. I think that's about all I can say on this subject.

Would Mythbusters & Dirty Jobs be considered Reality TV? Because both those shows at least come close to what I consider Reality TV, but I enjoy them immensily.

I suspect that American Chopper & Deadliest Catch would be considered, but I don't enjoy those quite as much. And I suppose Survivorman as well.

Anyway, personally I'm not against the whole Reality TV concept, I just think it can get used terribly. It should NEVER be used as a Gameshow, and following around a messed up family is just exploitive.

The problem is that reality shows are cheap, probably the cheapest entertainment a studio can make.

While some reality shows are good, every network and their uncle has a reality show of some sort.

They aren't entirely bad, but when Cartoon fucking Network has reality shows, there really needs to be a general culling of the genre.

Personally I enjoyed SciFi's first season of "Who wants to be a Superhero?" It was just the right amounts of cheesy and awesome. Even though Major Victory (the best hero ever!) didn't win beause it was all staged and of course the little Stan Lee fanboy would win, I had great fun watching it.

The second seaon failed to capture the magic that the first season held and I was really happy that thing died after like the second or third episode. Other than that I just can't get into reality TV.

I wouldn't consider those reality TV. They are their to put on a show and "teach" (for lack of a better term) the viewer some interesting tidbit. It's more like Docutainment.

I dislike most reality tv shows. They aren't very creative and everyone in it are pretty much selfish jerks who would do anything for the money.

If Amazing Race is one of the only ones I like. It's a team event and you almost never are allowed to hinder the other teams expect in certain areas. And team mates are not trying to off each other. That's the main reason for my Dislike of Survivor and Big Brother, you go around forming little groups then backstab each other so you can win the cash.

This.

Reality tv isn't a terrible idea - it's basically a different version of Game Shows. And when you have stuff like 'Amazing Race' then yeah it actually takes a pretty interesting form, albeit you have to realize that "reality" tv is edited just as much if not moreso than any piece of fiction.

But in general I have quite a bit of moral outrage over reality tv shows rather than fictional shows. I have moral outrage over those as well for pretty much any reason (Tv makes me angry), but I feel like reality TV provides an excuse for everyone who watches it to be horrible people becuase, 'hey, I'm not as bad as crazy woman # 4,657 on the last episode of Wife Swap'. It set's the bar low for expectations of polite and sane human behavior. And if you elect me president I will do everything in my power to eliminate this harmful influence from our children and our children's children, and also make sure they bring back pizza in the cafeteria on Fridays. Thank you. Forever and ever, amen.

I hope nobody minds this, but I love Project Runway. Not completely sure if that counts as reality television, but I'm thinking it does. Never miss an episode, though.

However, I agree that almost all reality shows are a blight upon humanity. Unfortunately, my little sister loves quite a few of them.

By the way, I recently discovered a show called The Colony. I have no opinion of it yet, because I've watched less than an episode worth. A friend told me it was good, but I don't know if anyone else here has a different opinion.

The Colony is annoying, in that the people participating act as if they really are in a post-apocalyptic landscape while the narrator constantly reminds you they aren't. "Even though these outlaw bikers can't actually harm the Colonists, they don't know that." Oh, really? They don't know they aren't actually in a post-apocalyptic wasteland despite signing up for a tv show which has a camera crew documenting their every move? And it being television, the producers aren't legally allowed to physically harm them in any way?

The show should've just been a straight-up mockumentary series with actors reenacting the parts ad lib, and a panel of say, survival experts, commenting on the show to provide the education factor, some narration, etc. Not a "gameshow", not that there is any actual competition, but I just absolutely hate the reality TV format and the constant breaking of the fourth wall provided by the pseudo-survival of contestants and the narrators in these shows.

EDIT: Actually what I'm saying is it is apparent the participants all did a really good job of roleplaying and maintaining the illusion/atmosphere, but the execution/editing of the actual show ruined it completely by constantly breaking the fourth wall.

Here is a Reality show i would watch:

Get 2 teams

Give them Airsoft or Paintball guns

Give them limited supply of Food and water

Make them fight, at any time they choose, to steal stuff from the other teams

Make special events to capture new, better outposts with more food and a bigger cash prize, The Person who gets shot the most in those events is off the show.

By the time both teams become just one team, after a few rounds of elemination, just bring in a small squad of Marines or Swat officers to "play" with them to see if their cash prize raises or drops.

There. No bullshit, no drama, just stupid action and skill and a lot of people shooting each other...

I would love to see them bring the Coliseum back. The romans had it right. Drop convicts who committed heinous crimes in an arena, let them fight it out to the death. Winner gets fame and feasts losers pretty much dead. I'm talking about those guilty of rape/murder/mutilation. Shit like that. If people love to watch people act like asses and general shitheads to one and another and as greedy mother fuckers then they should love watch this.

At least in the States, there are enough 'roiding jocks looking to represent their burbclaves and get "in" with Enzo early that they'll gladly flex their muscles and bang some shit on camera to keep reality shows and contests alive.
