It's a sin that I hadn't watched it until today, especially since it is possibly my favorite movie of all time. Perfect actresses for the parts, perfect creepy factor, perfect characterization...weird ending. Which is what I actually wanted to ask about. What is your take on the ending? I've seen several different interpretations, both for the US and UK endings.
Wow, I've never had a movie leave me that drained. Of course, I still haven't seen Requiem yet.

I really hated this movie. I adored the beginning with the environmental horrors, but once the monsters showed up, I got really bored. I need consistency in my movies, and this one just couldn't decide how it wanted the monsters to act.

that movie scared the shit out of me.
I typically hate horror movies because of their over usage of obvious gore or just plain attrocious scenes (ie: mutant rape scene in the hills have eyes) but this one managed to actually apply horrifying violence in interesting ways, and while the ending was a little She-Ra to be believable, the first time you watch it you're all like "fuck yeah!"
I'm not terribly familiar with the minutiae of this forums spoiler rules so I'll just not comment on the ending in any detail.

I greatly disliked it as well. I was actually with it until I started watching it. I really had expected something other then inbred cave people. Like, they discover a gateway directly to Hell or something. Just...bah, lame.
I liked The Cave better.

No one has mentioned the ending except in saying they won't mention it.
The inbred mountain cave jackassery part of it wasn't an ending revelation.

well, considering the humongous god damn plot twist you're so casually tossing about, I'm willing to agree that it at least borders on a spoiler.
Also, I'm pretty sure he was just being facetious.

The movie is a few years old now and it's a retarded "twist" that wasn't a twist it was just a let down

why you gotta be gettin' all up in my grill son?
Unilaterally labeling something retarded, even with quotation marks, is really combative and generally dissuades polite discourse, ya dig?
case in point: I'm a big fan of that let down, it scared the shit out of me (as was previously stated) and that's not something that I find in most movies. It manages to develop enough of the characters that you actually don't want them to die as well, which is another aspect most horror movies fall short on.
I find it really hard to bash a movie that succeeds on so many levels in a genre wherein it's perfectly acceptable to create an antagonist that needs no external validation to exist. Honestly, the typical modus operandi of a horror movie monster is "I am evil and indestructible, I will now proceed to kill/eat/rape you for the enjoyment of the audience."
Also, I think your definition of the term plot twist is highly suspect if you don't think this GIANT GOD DAMN PLOT TWIST THAT THE WHOLE MOVIE HINGES ON qualifies.

The director's commentary had this explanation for the ending: The chick is just hallucinating that she made it out and is really still trapped, however, in her mind she has escaped so it's sort of okay. She gets to spend her last minutes with her daughter. Or something lame like that.
I preferred the alternate, obvious explanation for the ending, this one is WAY better. Okay, here goes: There weren't any cave people. The main character actually murdered all the other women , including the one who was sleeping with her boyfriend, for revenge. The cave people were a hallucination from the beginning, when in reality she was the one who killed the other cave divers.
Also I thought this movie was WAY better than The Cave. I think there was a third movie that came out around the same time also set in a cave. What's up with film studios trying to outdo each other on the same subject?
Oh, and by the way, the existence of the cave people in and of itself is a spoiler for this movie, by the way. Not as much as spoiling the ending (dude, seriously, why are you spoiling the ending), but still somewhat, as it's never hinted at in any of the synopsis or whatever what they run into in the cave.
So everybody chill on the spoilers seriously.

Wow. I never even thought of that. It's almost like American Psycho, only backwards.
Also, I thought the cave people (crawlers) were actually a race of humans who evolved to live underground rather than above, and they were meant to symbolize the demons we all fight ourselves and our inner evil that we all by nature have, which would actually make Magus' take on it more accurate. Don't remember hearing anything about inbreeding. o_O

Basically when there is a race of mutant cave people monsters, inbreeding is just assumed because that's what mutant cave people monsters do! Or something like that! :D
They were probably referring more to other horror movies and how the people in those are explained (like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre or something) rather than the actual facts of this specific movie.

I'm assuming there's two different endings?
Because in the version I saw one of them makes it out of the cave and to the car, but then suddenly wakes up and is still in the cave, everything from when she was knocked out having been a dream.

Yep, that was the U.K. ending. It was cut out before being released in the U.S.
