View Full Version : How successful is Atomic Robo currently?

Atomic Robo has been out for almost two years now so I hope by now Mr. Clevinger has an idea of just how well Robo is doing.

So, is it selling well? Is the fanbase still widening?

After all, if you don't make enough money, how can you possibly live up to the demands of your felines?

Compared to A-list Marvel and DC titles, it's a flop. Compared to other new titles about new characters by new creators from a new publisher it's huge.

The difficulty in gauging Atomic Robo's popularity is that there's too much to track and no reliable method to track any of it. Yeah, you'd think it'd be easy to track physical sales, but welcome to world of failure that is Diamond Distribution. We also have no idea what our iPhone penetration is, though we remain in the top 20 of book apps even though our sales are divided between two different apps per comic. And none of this takes into consideration how many people read scans.

All I can say is that Atomic Robo comics and trades are constantly in demand and hard to find pretty much everywhere because no matter how many a given store orders, they sell out super fast.

This. And we can thank Marvel and DC for doing it.

I went to go get some trades from my local shop of Robo only to find out it was like pulling teeth to support the comic/games shop I love. That seems like a good sign.

Yup. Make no mistake, comic shops are incredibly rare. Marvel and DC Superhero Stores are all over the place.

On the rare occasion I hit a 'Things From Another World' or a more locale based shop, I always ask and they never, ever, have Atomic Robo.

Hate this country. Can't get cheap healthcare, can't buy Atomic Robo. Next thing you know DC and Marvel will own my insurance company! BAH!

Which is a shame really cause Robo is quite possibly one of the best new comics around. It has a fresh new story and more likable characters. The only Marvel and DC story I like as close to as I like Robo is Marvel 1602

Ok, so, how about a Robo/ Emerson Wilde crossover?

Oh God yes. Borrow that guy Devin's costume and that guy Devin and make this happen.

This, of course, leads me to a great image of Emerson hunting at an anime convention.

This, of course, leads me to the great image of Emerson hunting at ComicCon while Robo is the guest of honor who announces the Eisner Awards in 2008, giving his own comic the award for Best New Series.

We're way ahead of you guys on this one, but it's not in live ation form. Scott and I just finished a seven page Robo story that co-stars Emerson. It should be live in a couple weeks.

Ok I'm geeking out here. That's going to be awesome.

Robo is better than Deadpool.

There. I said it.

You'll get no argument from me. Really, it's just that Deadpool is usually written as a different kind of comedy. It's good, but I prefer Robo-style to it personally...which is why I write Robo-style as opposed to Deadpool!

Fans keep suggesting I should seek to do a Deadpool mini, but I din't think I work on the right wavelength.

I think you could do a Deadpool mini comic, but it wouldn't be -exactly- Deadpool. It would be funny, and probably well written and enjoyable, but it would feel slightly different.

I think Deadpool is in danger of being overused. I mean people think it's the funniest comic ever but there are tons of other things out there...hell Deadpool isn't even one of my top 10 favorite superheroes...to me he's just kind of...gimmicky...a one trick pony

I just don't think he has the depth of other characters out there

That said Robo never fails to surprise me with new and different things. I don't want to see Deadpool done Robo style. The depth of Robo wouldn't fit Deadpool.

That said I'd love to see Brian tackle someone like Spiderman. Funny but not funny for the sake of being funny.'

Spidey, or Iron Man, I'd like to see, personally.

Iron Man mainly because it draws me in inexplicably, more than any correlation to Atomic Robo.

Using a bit of necromancy because of this post (http://www.nuklearpower.com/2009/10/23/how-i-killed-your-first-chapter/).

Team Robo deserves all the praise it receives and more. This comic is the only one I've ever been seriously interested in for all the reasons you've stated. (Lack of a huge intricate backstory, fun adventures, no angst, etc.)

So congratulations, and I really look forward to even more success in the future. So bring on Vol 4! :D

Well, Atomic Robo is breaking international Frontiers now, so that should make things even better for 2010. I would really like to see it getting bigger . There is totally a Michael Bay / Stephen Spielberg Colab movie down the road for this one.

Yeah, but I think Brian's clever enough with his rights to avoid it.

Aye.
Hardcore fans to the... err... core. And Meister and I aren't the only ones in our countries importing.
Though, from my local comicbook shop, I understand I'm the only one buying the single issues at their store. Everybody else is buying the trade paperbacks.

Just read the newest news post. All I can say is...rock on.

I've been so brainwashed by Robo that you could essentially make your printer print a test page, call it Atomic Robo Special Edition, publish it, and I'd still buy it and bring it to Comic Con to get signed.

As much as Brian hates crossovers, I'd love to see him at the helm of a Iron Fist/Spidy team up book.
