So, I was watching it again today, and it just struck me what a brilliant show FLCL was. I mean, first few times you watch it, you might not catch how subtle it is, but so many of the lines are so well done.

Episode Three: "I used to be in school plays. It was really dumb and embarrassing... But I was kind of happy too. Mom and Dad both came to see me together, so it's a good memory."

Plus the interrogation scene in episode four. In fact, all the little similarities with lines and attitudes between Amarao and Naota.

Anyone else feel like showing your love for this show?

Yes but they do it so well that it makes The homages their own.

I think my favorite homage was when Haruko is riding the guitar in a bunny girl outfit and yells, "Daikon V!"

That's the whole point. :D

And they don't just parody one thing at a time as well. And there's so many more...interesting things for those with sharp eyes.

I like how it doesn't make any sense at all and still manages to make sense, somehow.

What are you talking about? It makes perfect sense. I'd even go so far as to say that if you have any questions about anything, you haven't watched it enough times.

which is what I actually meant by
and still manages to make sense, somehow.
I may just watch it again today, by the way. Since it's been some time.

It's ridiculously good, but if you think the show makes no sense, you clearly haven't read the manga.

I have read the manga.
And I'll never say something that contradicts itself ever again because people only read half of it anyway. On purpose.
Totally. >:(

Don't feel so bad, I read what you said and I thought the same thing you though. It makes no sense but makes complete sense all at the same time, its great.

Saying it makes no sense but makes sense gives the impression that there are questions left unanswered and things that don't make sense, but that it makes sense in general. The show makes complete sense. Manga isn't as good, in my opinion, though.

You have to watch it like 50 times to catch everything though. I've seen it all the way through twice, once in English and once in Japanese w/ Subs.

Still to this day all I can remember is a vague allegory for growing up with thinly veiled penis jokes and a robot with a TV face.

One thing that did stick in my mind was the end of episode 4, Full Swing. One of the best scenes Gainax has ever done. Right up there with Simon's Breakthrough and the End of the Anti-Spiral.

Another thing I like about this show is that the music is, well, perfect. This is pretty much the only show I can say that about, too.

Yeah, surely Cowboy Bebop didn't have perfect music.

PS: FLCL rules.

Okay, I'll give that one to you. CB had pretty awesome music. Not as many memorable songs though, in my opinion.

Music that directly correlates to the action going on the screen makes it much, much better. Blues drive monster for the wins.

FLCL is really easy to understand when you realize: "Growing up is confusing!"

I'm not sure FLCL had as many songs in total as Cowboy Bebop had memorable songs, dude.

Yes, the great music in Great Anime A is more memorable to me than the great music in Great Anime B WE MUST ARGUE THE ISSUE.

You threw down the challenge, man. You called it the best! There's some amazingly stiff competition for best music and quantity of best musics!

She has a point. Randomly CB music just pops into my head from day to day and I'm glad for it. The only time I think about FLCL songs is when I'm either watching it or someone else brings it up.

I mean I'm not even the hugest Cowboy Bebop fan, nor a super anime lover, but Cowboy Bebop has almost unequivocally good music. There are shows that are better than Cowboy Bebop -- hell you could easily argue FLCL to be more enjoyable or more interestingly written -- but Cowboy Bebop has the best music of any show ever.

(I'm not counting Scrubs and similar stuff because that was 99% music taken from other sources and isn't really the show's soundtrack so much as like a mixed tape of good music).

I remember my best friend introducing me to that show. First the title put me off. Then the giant Iron. Then the robot with the TV head.

I really have to watch it again. This thread is making me feel like I watched an entirely different program then it was meant to be.

Yes yes, many many other anime have amazing music usage, but this is a FLCL fellation thread.

Yes, and that was a completely objective opinion with no amount of bias whatsoever, just like every opinion ever, righ'? I feel that the music matched the scenes perfectly, and that while the same could be said of Cowboy Bebop, FLCL music sticks in my head more and I find myself humming to it and all that fancy jazz much more frequently. I'm completely willing to admit my bias in the matter, just as people have bias in every opinion they express.

This thread is making me feel like I watched an entirely different program then it was meant to be.The show is a frosted layer of sexual innuendo and penis jokes heavily sprinkled with zany, over-the-top humor, and beneath that is the delicious cake of dynamic characters with more depth than most other shows and the story of a young boy growing up. AND IT IS AWESOME.

I would like to point out the fact that that's why there are so many penis and sex jokes.

I mean sexual confusion is a big part of adolescence. They even manage to throw in reference to life trying make you less of an individual and just part of the crowd with the whole NO MO WRINKLES plot.

People getting too serious in a thread about giant hands flattening the earth's creases: Noncon!

Honestly I never really saw the point of "appreciation" threads. It's all been overly talked about and I'm reminded of a tune called, "Let It Be," in that FLCL, Bebop, and a scant few other gems in the otherwise destitute swamp that is anime stand out as such good shows that all positive things go without saying. When you go into a thread where everyone talks about their favorite shows, most of the folks won't even bother talking about Bebop or FLCL because there's just this understanding amongst people that've watched them -- and get them -- that discussing them with our silly words just doesn't live up to how good they are. They're the standard by which people rate how perfect a show can be -- the shows that make people go, "I don't like anime, except for FLCL of course."

So, to this thread meant for appreciation, the only thing I can think of that wouldn't be undermining such a good show is to tell anyone who hasn't seen it and is curious to watch it. Watch it several times. It's a few hours of your life much better spent, and everything we say just won't convey the enjoyment of it. A lot of this post may sound like I'm haphazardly comparing FLCL and Bebop, but that's not true. They stand on opposite ends, in that FLCL is that wonderful show you watch over and over again to "get" everything about it -- Cowboy Bebop is another beast entirely, where one sitting is an eye opening experience that can't be emulated again.

Still has better music, though. 8)
