I saw this movie, Moon the other night and I have to say, it's probably one of the best movies of the year and one of the best Sci-Fi movies of the past 5-10 years. There's just one real character, no make that two, no three, maybe two... hell it's minimal to say the least.
Here's the IMDB link. Try not to spoil yourself.

I'm going to see this tonight/possibly tommorow. Impressions to come (ie: reasons why it sucks).

Well, for starters its Sci-Fi.
Wait, do you mean its Science Fiction or that it is an original movie made by the SciFi channel? Because SciFi's original movies blow. Always.

Remember it's actually the SyFy channel now. Which is dumb.

When I saw that it was titled Sunshine, I was really expecting this book. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunshine_(novel))
I was disappointed. Because what we are getting is a remake of The Core. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_core)

Wait, wasn't Sunshine released like 2 years ago? I remember my flatmates going to watch it.

No no no, it's Science Fiction. Not the channel, the genre. I agree with you about "SyFy" originals, but this is not that thing.

Moon is fantastic. Prolly my fifth favourite movie of the year. Could use more stuff actually happening in the last third, but still enjoyable. Rockwell is brilliant.
Also, it was directed by David Bowie's son.

That's a GOOD thing?
Now I'm going to avoid seeing it out of spite.
Naw, but I'll probably see it like...tomorrow.

This wasn't released anywhere within 20 miles of me. I burn with anger.

I was going to say something about how 5th favorite of the year isn't much of a compliment, but in retrospect there have been an assload of good movies this year.

Well, I've seen like 20 movies from this year already, and very few of them haven't been really fun.

It's playing like 5 minutes from my house. In the only theater in town that plays Indie Movies. I think I might go see that tonight!

If you can see it and you like old-school "the Cold Equations"-style science fiction, or just intelligent science fiction period, you need to go. One of the best movies I've seen in a long time.

That gives me a little bit of doubt actually. Don't get me wrong it was a great heart wrenching story but the entire situation was a little forced. For starters the error margins in fuel were way too close. Even though it was stupidly expensive we sent a relatively large amount of spare fuel to the moon. There are too many unknowns, especially during reentry into an atmosphere, to be able to calculate fuel that precisely. Like if there was bad weather over the landing zone. Further, a lot can be done via aerobraking especially if he found her soon enough. There should have been a trajectory through the atmosphere that could have compensated for the fuel. Aside from that it seems the idea was to land the thing via retro rockets which is absurd. If fuel was so short and safety so important the safest way to land is via heat shield and parachute. It would also be faster. The story was written in 1954 and there had been enough suborbital flights by then to make this pretty clear. Landing on a planet with an atmosphere using retro rockets is just wasteful.
Basically, what I am saying is that sharing the same emotional thought provoking aspects as "The Cold Equations" is good as long as it avoids that trap that most science fiction falls into. If you have to force or fudge the science to make the story fit, or the other way around, chances are you are writing it in the wrong genre. That or you are attempting to use the wrong science. There were much better choices for needing to eject the girl. Things like CO2 build up, or lack of sufficient O2 supplies. If the fuel was rationed that tightly there is no way the pilot had enough O2 in that ship to last the both of them more than 1/2 to 2/3 of the way to the planet. I don't know maybe its because I know a bit more than the average person about science in general but it just bugs me; like explosions in space not being spherical and the sound reaching a ship before the blast wave. (In this case there is sound in space after a fashion in that when the expanding compression wave from the explosion hits the ship it will make a sound but not really what we normally associate with an explosion. Then of course there is the debris.)

Much like The Hurt Locker, I have to wait to see this on DVD because I live in an intellectual wasteland devoid of anything but mainstream Hollywood films guaranteed to gross at least 100 million dollars, or like, movies that the creators think should gross that much, anyway.

I don't know if I'd call myself a dork. Its more a function of the fact that I relatively close to having a bachelors in Physics and most SciFi deals largely with concepts for Physics. It tends to ruin the fun like knowing the secrets of a magicians trick by getting in the way of suspension of disbelief. In short, I prefer fantasy over SciFi for the very specific reason that I can yell "Its magic stupid!" at myself every time I think about the scientific impossibilities going on. SciFi with magic, that avoids crappy scientific explanations of said magic, are where its at really.
