And, they let him do that important thing which I assume is a speech* that's going to be key to the Weyland-Yutani merger? Heavy stuff.

I was wondering what the hell that thing was, but my monitor is craptastic and I took it for a pencil holder.

Anyways, I love this comic and everything about it. The Warbot At War drawing you did for your draw-a-thon is one of my longest lasting desktop wallpapers.

Can I pretend that the guy in the third-to-last panel came all the way from the right to the left JUST to say that, and then walked back to the right, instead of just saying it as he passed by? Because that's how I interpreted it at first and it was hilarious.

They're failed attempts at suicide notes.

Speaking of which, panel 9 really makes this comic for me.

And I can't imagine how this could get worse... though I don't doubt Clevinger's capacity for cruelty to fictional characters. Warbot will probably end up accidentally causing the deaths of everyone he has ever loved and admired.

Yeah, that was a pain in the ass. Just little things kept cropping up at the worst times. Deadlines on other projects for me followed by computer problems for Zack, etc.

Don't worry, we're always thinking about Warbot. A lull does not indicate a lack of interest or a hiatus that'll become permanent. If there's any reason why we'd have to stop updating it in the long term, you'd hear about it on the main page pretty damn quickly.

I would like to request the next Warbot comic being something nice, warm and fuzzy. Because he failed to get companionship through a creature made by his own hand, through women or even his co-workers, he decides to go to the animal shelter and adopts a cuddly little kitten.

The next eight panels are of him and the kitten having fun. Him dangling a piece of yarn and the kitten batting at it, the kitten climbing atop his head to nap there, Warbot keeping the kitten on a leash as they walk through the park and sit in the flowers.

The final panel can be of warbot from the legs-up, hiding the floor and his feet. He can be entering through the door to his house at night. And there can be a single sound-effect on screen.

No matter how many people get killed, I can't think of any pet comic that could possibly be more depressing than meo's idea. Maybe with a few panels added onto the end of warbot standing motionless, without looking down.
But I wouldn't be surprised if Brian and Zack came up with something even worse.

I'm certain they could outdo creating something warm and cuddly that loves Warbot unconditionally, something that finally makes him happy and has no expectations of him like dates or paperwork, only to be viciously and suddenly cut down in the blink of an eye because of the way he was built and has no control over, leaving him alone, miserable and with the knowledge that the one thing he enjoyed spending his time with is forever gone by his doing. Perhaps, I don't know, the shelter could call and ensure that Fluffy's neutering appointment was still on the day after at the local vet right afterwards.

Or he could get a parrot that spouts 4chan memes. Y'know. That's pretty bad, there.

Yes, it is saying we must continue to watch and sadistically enjoy his tortured, terrible existence.

Brian is quite possibly the only person who can make this kind of comic and have people laugh at it. Not many other writers can make people laugh at the protagonist terrible existence for more than 10 episodes/comics/whatever, so I'm waiting to see if the next one is also as enjoyable.

The critics say about Bruce Willis, "He's an actor with a very wide range of expression: Eyes open and eyes closed." Kinda like Warbot, who can stare blankly and look down. The funny things is that it works. Present the audience with a blank slate and our imagination will fill in the blanks and create a rich, deep character that remind us of ourselves and make us identify. Of course in Bruce Willis' case his eternal stubble and hangover destroys that delicate process. Anthony Hopkins is a better example. But it probably works best in comics, where you can have characters with tremendously few physical features. I'm rambling.

Kurosen
07-12-2009, 03:03 PM
Naw, that's part of our intent with Warbot. To kind of push the boundary of what a person will project, emotionally, onto a character. Scott gets a ton of praise for making Robo so expressive given that his face is completely blank except for his eyes. But they're big eyes, and most human facial expressions can be read from the eyes and eyebrows, and Robo is human sized and human shaped, so it's easy to interpret his body language too. He's completely non-human, but he projects enough human-like signals that it's not only easy but natural to treat him like one.

Then you've got Warbot who is just this huge block. Not human sized, not human shaped, no human range of motion or movement, no head, and a single tiny optic for a face.

It's interesting to me how completely the audience tends to sympathize with Warbot despite his complete lack of human-like signals. Some people can't bring themselves to read it because they feel so bad about Warbot's life.
