For a given definition of good.
Never again, Emmerich. Never again.

Regulus Tera's criterion for quality in disaster movies:
Does a lot of shit get messed up? [Y/N]
If [N]
Try again!
If [Y]
Profit!

Yikes... looks atrocious.
But i'll probably watch it since i found The Day After Tomorrow to be a fun flick.

I hope the spaceships blow up before the end, I'd like 1 disaster movie were people don't survive.

go watch "Knowing" and see if you still think that.
Also, i went to the official website for the movie and entered the "Lotery For Human continuity"... but my code is -1.

pfft, the aliens rescuing the kids at end kinda mean that not everyone died, I mean I want EVERYONE dead, none of this saved at last minute or such crap, i want to have the hope of survivors crushed at the last minute and everyone realizes the world is over and humanity is extinct thats what I want.
i want to have the hope of survivors crushed at the last minute and everyone realizes the world is over and humanity is extinct thats what I want.Followed by like some scenic montage of the shattered remains of our existence all while some female voice is going "OOooooOOaAAAaaHHHHHOOOOAAaaaaa OooooaaaAAAaaaaHHHh" in the background?
That sounds like an ending I can get behind.

And even a movie I could get behind. Watching everyone scrambling around attempting to avert or escape the coming destruction of the planet and after all that, when it seems like they might, they get right fucked and you get a lasting image of a person looking with the oh shit we are fucking doomed just before they die broken and crushed with all hope lost.

HELL YEAH!!! I love these end of the world movies. Just something about wondering what would happen if everyone died... what would happen to the world? And future civilizations, what would they say about our ruins? Gets me all tingly.
That being said, of course people are going to survive. People can't handle the crushingly depressing idea of the extinction of the human species. Even if billions of people die in this movie, it won't be so bad as long as a small group of Americans make it out alright. So I don't see one of my movie fantasies being fulfilled this time around.

Watching the trailer again, I'm guessing the whole thing is like:
2012 reported on the news; everyone's like yeah right.
Signs of the end of the world happen to the main dude's family.
Narrow escapes by said family.
GLOBAL APOCALYPSE
Discovery that the U.N. knew this since quite a while back.
The ark is meant to save the few selected, of which the main dude's family isn't.
They get on.
Bad guys die, good guys survive.
A dove brings a fig -a sign of land nearby.
God comes down and says "I warned you motherfuckers to behave."

My whole problem is the Theme. It's like "I don't even have to write it!" The Trailer itself made me cringe a little bit, as it just felt like the same crappy videos i would've found on those conspiracy websites.
Still, if it's better than "Knowing" it should be enjoyable

Uggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggh John Cusack.
On the major plus side, I do believe I spotted a giraffe being heli-carried, and that is just every kind of awesome.

Hey now, you know what the first thought that occurred to my mind was?
If the Apocalypse actually happens in 2012, how bad is Emmerich going to feel for making a quick buck with a movie release glorifying said destruction?
Also, wouldn't you hate to be John Cusack if that were to happen? The world's falling apart around you, and you're just some random actor, but everyone runs up to you and screams "You have to save us! Just like you did in that movie!!!"
When 2012 rolls around and global destruction hits, I will still be smiling if the first casualty killed in the very first disaster happens to be Roland Emmerich. I mean, how could you not at least enjoy a brief chuckle at his expense, prior to breaking down upon the cruel realization that the end times are upon us and humanity is doomed?

"From the director from Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow"... with this fact in mind the mindset behind this movie makes frighteningly perfect sense.
I would like a disaster movie where all of humanity dies for once.
And I would really like for the disaster movie genre to die a slow and painful death for it is a retarded, one-dimensional, and long played-out movie concept. Sadly, we all can't get what we wish for :(

I'm going to be the douche that says the Mayans don't claim the world ends in 2012. They claim it's the end of a 5,176 (I don't remember exactly, that was off the top of my head, but it's around that number) year long era. They just say a big change will occur.
And since humans have been around for longer than 5,176 years, well, I'm inclined to think it's not some apocalyptic event.

NOOOO, your stone cold logic in explain that we've been around for ever have crushed my hopes for this movie.
It's been counting since Aug 11th 3114 BCE by the Gregorian Calender and Sept 6th 3114 BCE by the Julian Calender.
12.19.19.17.19 is the date to signify a creation ending. And we're in the 13th creation right now.
So yeah 2012 probably isn't the end of the world and the movie is someone finally trying to cash in on it big time, there will probably be tons more before now and Dec 20th 2012 that we have to look forward too.
13.0.0.0.0 is the start of the fourteenth b'ak'tun.
Not sure what that actually means but thats the jist I got from reading up on it in a buncha books and then it starts over again. I don't recall anything crappy happening in 3114 though.

What frustrates me the most about people actually believing that the world is ending in 2012 is the fact that there is absolutely no way to tell them that predicting the future based on ancient calendars and mythologies any more than Y2K was totally, no, for realz, going to be "MILLENIAL DOOM!!!"
Anyway. Eh, I'll probably pass.

Umm but dude 2012 is the year the lizard people will choose to reveal themselves to us. Way different than a computer glitch.

It is a bit different than just a new b'ak'tun as this is the end of the great cycle- meaning for the first time ever dates will be repeated. This was the first great cycle and we will enter the second. As far as I am aware
From what I've read nobody is really sure if the Maya attached any significant weight to this date anymore than getting a new calender. Like hitting a new year only longer.
And as far as we can tell hitting a new cycle was a big party for the Mayans- so yeah this is exactly like Y2K all over again- big parties, foretelling of doom, nothing bad happening.

Saw it before Half Blood Prince.
Looked just as terrible on the big screen.

Knowing doesn't count because those two little kids survive.
That aside that movie is just plain bad and if you ever mention it again in a coherent sentence not only will I cry but certain parts of me will actually invert with pain.
This movie looks to be on par with Day After Tomorrow. So it's not going to be great, but it'll be entertaining enough that I'll spend the money to see it. Also because 2012 makes me laugh.
