View Full Version : Things films should do more

So I dunno what's the deal but seriously theme songs seem to have died off for all but superhero movies and really old franchises - Some of the best movies of all time (Terminator and Ghostbusters for example) have theme songs, why haven't people used theme songs much lately? It's pretty much been limited to stuff like Spider-Man and Batman.

Oh also that thing where they lead into a flashback and start to darken the room so it's the two people talking sitting in complete blackness? They did that in the first TMNT movie and I thought it was pretty cool, I wonder why nobody ever did that again. Or maybe they did? If someone wants to point it out I'd be game.

This. If they're going to spend so much money on special effects, at least make it effects we can see and appreciate (and no, I don't mean overly huge explosions).

And maybe having some women characters that are more than just love interests/ damsels in distress.

Be worth watching. Oh yeah I went there.

I'd like to see more movies with more creative imaginitive worlds/universes that provoke creativity and inspires it's fans to imagine their own sort of stories that would take place in that kind of a world/universe. Kind of like the Star Wars and Star Trek universes. There's so much nowadays that's just like "well, this takes place in (average distopian future setting) or (nonspecific fantasy knights-and-dragons type setting)" with... not much other thought put into it. I want a world I can lose myself in.

Movies need two things in my opinion...

First, everyone needs to lighten up. So many of the movies that come out today are too serious for their own good.

Second, there needs to be more banter. Nothing makes character interaction than interesting and witty banter.

This, yeah. It worked for warscenes and was pretty great at the time but special effects and action can be done so much easier these days there's really no excuse.

A good example is the Bourne movies (If you're reading this, sorry! You know who you are). The first one had great action scenes that didn't rely on shaky cameras, and was fantastic. The second one turned it into a WWF Treadstone-yaoi slap-fest special featuring a fiber wire and a spaztic cameraman. The third one, thankfully, brought it back home with well-done action.

I'm glad we're of the same opinion concerning the series in general, but dear god that window/rooftop battle in Ultimatum was the craziest shaky-cam fest I've ever seen in my life. The rest of the movie was great, but I felt like throwing up after that one fight.

Be more original, as opposed to slapping a comic book or 80's cartoon title on a generic plot and generic explosion scenes.

Find a way to resurrect Bogart and Buster Keaton. And Peter Lorre, as long as we're at it, because a Bogey movie ain't a Bogey movie unless he's punching out Peter Lorre at some point. Buster Keaton has nothing to do with Bogart, but dammit he's awesome so he can be brought back to life as well.

Old movies kick ass.

3rd or 4th or 5th'd or whatever on the 'less-shaky-camera' thing, that bugs me a lot.

One of my big things is continuity. Reward fans for watching - a tight rein on relevant continuity gives us something to talk about after we leave the theater. 'Oh that happened because of this earlier scene', or, 'that happened in the first movie so it had to happen this was in this movie' etc etc.

Firefly was good about this, Star Trek: DS9 was probably the only series of the franchise to consistently do this.

Actually this scene was okay with the shaky camera, as it was done more to emphasize speed and desperation rather than make a sloppy and crummy fight scene look decent. It made a huge difference since you could still tell what was going on. For me at least.

Every once in a while, just give some skeezy random loiterer with Hollywood aspirations like $15 million and a year to have fun. Scientifically, you either end up with some mindboggingly weird entertainment or some actually good movies, either way, new cult gems perfect for drinking and watching.

Also, stop trying to make movies that are so bad they're fun.

Plus I hear high-definition black and white films can look fantastic on a level beyond HD colour. Don't ask me why, they just do!

I wouldn't mind if they tried mixing up some of the cultural/racial cliches in most movies. Like have a strong female protagonist, or a black character not from the "hood", or a midget! But the midget actually kicks ass and isn't just there to make everyone laugh because haha short people are funny.

Mostly because a lot of black and white films, especially noir films, played with the boundaries between the black and the white colours to make stunning images out of simple scenes. It is reall a lost art.
Black and white are also opposite allowing great definition between shapes and images which you don't get with colours that are quite fuzzy.

Focus more. It goes hand in hand with the shaky camera thing but I've noticed whenever something is moving fast in movies it goes out of focus. This is especially true of movies with a lot of CGI in them.

i was going to say "Let's not kill the black guy first in over half the films with a black guy". But c'mon... that's not going to happen.

Also, Stop doing "Horror Flicks". They are Thrillers movies with random gritty violence and stuff that jumps on the camera

Also, stop trying to make movies that are so bad they're fun.

YES!

I'll say this... Films should try to reconnect with Comedy. Or just do more Leslie Nielsen movies.

I know about the Hogfather Movie. But to me, Discworld is too over the top to be live action. I think It would work with some high quality animation.

And get Neigel Plainer to do the narriation. That guy has the voice of God.

Don't force the movie to end bitter-sweet or happy. There are several movies where a bitter-sweet ending would have worked better than a happy one, and vice versa.

I love Stranger Than Fiction, but I think the bitter-sweet ending would have worked better.

1. Have better developed female characters.

2. Gender roles are not always defined by romance/sex.

3. Genre savvy sidekicks were unique and cutting in Scream. This has since ceased to be the case. Do take notice.

Romance and sex aren't an integral part of the human condition without exception. I would be happy if the writers didn't feel a need to shoehorn in a romance story into every plot.

Yeah, Don Bluth just couldn't keep up with them on some of his stuff, though it is also partly Spielberg's fault, too. You know why 12 out of 13 The Land Before Time movies suck balls?

though it is also partly Spielberg's fault, too

That's why. I think the same thing happened with The American Tail series, though I did enjoy Feivel Goes West. The rest of the (pre)sequels, not so much.

EDIT: Also just read that his last big film was Titan A.E., which I thought was lacking, but no more than the worst of Disney movies. Meaning I liked it. Still, that's 9 freaking years of no 2-D movie outside of Disney (non-anime) that I can think of.

EDITED: Also direct-to-video comic book animated movies, but they tend to get so little advertising I forget about them, and there are quite a bit.

Speaking of romance, I'd like more movies with sequels where the hero's love interest didn't get replaced every sequel.

I mean with James Bond or w/ev it's fine because James Bond clearly doesn't give a fuck but when you have a thing like Men in Black where this ongoing huge plot point is J reuniting with his wife and then the movie after that they're like "Oh yeah her she is gone" it's just lazy and dumb.

Will Smith. I am Legend. He was the only star in it. Need I say more?

I really, really, REALLY want to see better acting in movies. Back in the day, CGI didn't cover everyone's behind so all they had to do was focus on delivery. But damned if there's a crop of actors (Tropic Thunder, I'm looking at you even if you're funny...) that F up the movie for everyone else.

There needs to be more humor in serious flicks. Iron Man was great about this. Downey really gave the impression he cared about those robots, as much as they annoyed him (as Stark). Also, just the insertion of a bit of dry with here and there really livened things up. And the failed tests were hilarious. XD

That was K. J was the black guy who ran down a Cephlapod on foot through the streets of New York. K was the one who drove the Ford POS.

It was probably mentioned, but on top of being true to the source material, actually using the source material would be a step up as well. Men in Black II is also a good example as the villain never existed in the comic nor the animated series. There was a rogue agent in the comics named Ecks which could have been used, which the animated series at least did a twist on it with Alpha.

I would also like movies and television series where one or both were inspired by each other to work together more often. Highlander did this pretty well despite some continuity issues, the Sara Connor Chronicles at least threw in an alternate time line, but I can't think of anything else that did this too often. Maybe Power Rangers, but I always considered those movies as really long episodes.

Come to think of it, what was the last traditional 2-D movie by Disney prior to The Princess and the Frog? Was it Lilo and Stitch? That was 7 years ago.

Not an edit but only because I saw it before I hit post: Wow, Disney has a shitty site.

Yeah, here's what I have found in terms of 2-D animations. The bulk of them are anime and direct-to-video comic book animations. Then Pokemon has a movie almost every year.

The occasional Tom and Jerry, Scooby-Doo, The Land Before Time and other movies that are being specifically catered to try and bring in new audiences that don't care, or hammer very explicit morals into every installment. Therefore, the people that would enjoy them are annoyed and pissed that their childhood cartoons are being ruined. I even saw a Popeye in the list, which I may see at the risk of hating myself for seeing it. Still, I can deal with these.

The good stuff that's been coming out I had completely forgotten to include as movies are things from Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon before they ruined my childhood as well. A few Billy and Mandy movies, KND, an Ed, Edd and Eddy movie coming out later this year, and then The Fairly Odd Parents and Spongebob (screw you I like 'em).

Stuff from Matt Groening and Seth MacFarlane, you know what those are.

Then there's the shows that we all wish would just go away: Bratz, Barbie, Cabbage Patch, Pretty Pony and all the other crap that's plaguing the mind's of today's girls.

Lastly, not a single original 2-D animated Disney movie since Stitch it seems. Everything else is prequel or sequel (occasionally a parallel), and whatever category "adaptations of original stories using Disney characters" falls under.

Transformers -USAF Tech Sergeant Epps - Tyrese Gibson - Controlled the air space

Blade - Wesley Snipes - Badass half-vampire hunter

-------------------------------------------------------

Point being, we black people are there. But the movies are few and far between. Thank GOD that we aren't getting anymore gang movies, though Spike Lee's Miracle at St. Anna does look pretty good. I'm saying that cliches are getting used less as more prominent actors (Will Smith, Tyrese Gibson, Laurence Fishburn, Morgan Freeman) are being used.

More River Ram Beats Up Everyone. Seriously. There's way too many movies that try to include everything from apotheosis to zebras; too many elements to develop any of them very well. We need movies that do one thing as well as possible and ignores all else.

300 was on the right track with its absence of character developments and plot twists, but they had to go and slow down the action with a romantic not to mention politic subplot.

This doesn't mean dumber and less emotional movies, mind you. There's lots of room for movies to focus on things other than action.

I'm all for movies that know what they want to be instead of cramming too much into themselves.
