I'mma commit murders!
Excellent first issue. It also seemed a bit longer than the others.

Glad you liked it.
It wasn't longer, though, just talkier. The action cranks up in the next issue, but you knew that from looking at the last page!

Mine will arrive from Heavyink within the month, (I get all my month's comics to me on one, expensive day) I'll rant about how much I hate it/how awesome it is when I get it.
Honestly though, I don't think you can piss me off when it comes to Robo. Unless you kill Jenkins. If you do that, there will be blood.
Heh, just got myself a copy today and if Lovecraft was frothing at the mouth while raving he'd be exactly as I imagine he was in real life.

Great issue. I've gotta imagine that Lovecraft was just as much off his gourd in real life as he was here.
"I'ma commit murders" needs to be on a coffee mug, or something.

Lovecraft was probably way more sedate and rational in reality. But that's no fun!

You...You killed Lovecraft
Well he went out the way he lived. Stark Raving. Mad.

Why does this mother fucker not get any more posts. This is easily your best work, I would say most likely because of your team. Each one of them is brilliant.
Seriously, I know the name of the Letterer.

Finally had the time to get these from the store. They're excellent, Robo's phone talk with Tesla particularly so.

It's absolutely the team. Statistically speaking, it's impossible for Team Robo to consist entirely of incredibly talented people (and me) who are of exactly the right temperaments to enhance the work of everyone else on the team, but that's how it worked out.
I sincerely pity everyone who isn't reading Atomic Robo. It's like when you run into people who have never seen the original Star Wars trilogy, or Ghostbusters. You just stare at them for a moment with the vague sadness that this thing you're talking to thinks it's human.

It was great, for me anyway, to finally shed some more light on the Robo and Tesla relationship.

Re-read the first two issues after writing the above post and realized there is an incredible wealth of excellent moments, including but not limited to the orchid b-story, all of Robo's dialogue and, perhaps most importantly:
Yes, Robo, but you are not.

Ask your store to order it for you?
If the stores are worth their salt, they'll do it.
Mine certainly did. (Of course, there's always the fair chance they were going to anyway, 'cause those guys are cool like that)

Don't forget you can read the Free Comic Book Day (http://www.nuklearpower.com/2008/07/01/free-comic-book-day-page-1/) story arcs if you haven't already. And you should, because Dr. Dinosaur is a perfect foil for Robo.
Also, I'm throwing in my continued adoration for Robo.
Hey Brian, do you ever have any hopes to go more into Tesla's backstory in regards to his associations with Fort, Lovecraft, and the other names mentioned in the group? Even if not, I did love the name dropping.

A little. I think the less we know about Tesla, the more believable he becomes as a mythic figure. So, you'll get tantalizing hints every now and then, but not too often and nothing too concrete.
Eldezar
06-28-2009, 11:50 PM
I like it that way, particularly since there doesn't seem to be any real parodies of him. I mean, most of the time when people include Einstein or a parody, they really push the accent and make him relatively goofier than he really was, and it sort of downplays the feats he accomplished.
Since you are the only person I know of who has done any kind of fiction involving Tesla, or at least him directly, you might have a part in setting all future interpretations of his character in other fictional work. Keeping Tesla as a mythic figure I think pays him much more respect, especially since he was relatively secluded his entire life. I mean, the guy was even a virgin, and deemed his celibacy was a way to help him focus so much more on his inventions.
Now that I think of it, to you plan to include Tesla's pigeon? Just for fun, but that would definitely pay homage to him as well.

One thing I love about Atomic Robo: Brian has the ability to create instantly likable characters. I hope this is not the last we see of the 50s action science team, I would like to know more about them.

Aww, I'm glad they're getting some love.
I can guarantee you they will appear in Atomic Robo and the Flying She-Devils of the Pacific. We're just not sure when that will be. Current projections put it between Vol 7 and 9.

Another great issue. One thing I love about the series is how the Action Science Team relates to him
in the 2000s it seems like he's treated like the "Founder." Sure they quip, but there is still this undercurrent of respect for an 80 year old robot scientist.
In the 40s it seems like the soldiers were still getting used to the idea of him. He was new and slightly scary. Again there were quips but there is this deposition towards Robo like he's not "One of Us" at times.
In the 50s it seems like everybody has gotten used to him. Sure the Action Scientists know he's the boss, but he's like the boss of a local comic store; half-joking all the time. The only reason he's the boss is that he's the founder and he's a robot and nobody else wants to make the hard choices.
Great Work on another fantastic issue.
When does the movie come out?

Partly it's due to these guys being old war buddies with each other and Robo. There's just one throw away line in the issue that refers to this. It's when Mac refers to Operation: Paperclip (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_paperclip). So, there's a certain level of familiarity between everyone there.
One of the most interesting things, for me anyway, is Robo's subtle change in personality as he ages. He gets a little grumpier and more impatient as time goes on.
When does the movie come out?
Not soon enough.

I have a question about H.P. Lovecraft the character (not the real person).
At the end of the second volume spoiler Robo detonates a car right in the Shadow's mouth. I was waiting to see what happend to Mr. Lovecraft, but since you didn't say, I'm guessing it's either
A. Unfortunately Howard didn't make it
or
B. You'll tell us later because it's important.
Anyway, great issues as always. My favorite part was when Robo said, "New plan. Drive away forever."
Can't wait for the rest of the series. And the next one. And the next...

Sure I must have crossed over into some... dark alternate dimension where the Berlin comic book shop has become... able.

Delightful conclusion handled with panache. SFBT is most definitely my favorite Robo volume so far.
Loved Robo talking to Obama at the beginning, nice way of immediately making a comic that spends so much time in the past feel current. Still impressed with how quickly endearing the minor characters are. Plus, Jenkins! What's not to like?

Seeing a picture in the background of the group waving after blowing up the Egypt monster was a great way to start of the comic.
And I would like to recognize that Atomic Robo is officially cool for referencing our president.
Great series. Can't wait to see the epilogue with Lovecraft.
I did have a couple of questions though.
1. In the B story from 3/4 (wherein Robo is chasing down a scientist on hoverboards), there is a switcharoo. But no matter how many times I look at it, I'm not sure what was supposed to have happened behind the smoke.
2. Also, there was no B story for 3/5 to make room for a Red 5 comic promo. Is this going to become a regular thing now? I hope not.
3. Is the 5 issue volume format going to be the main format for the foreseeable future? (Although I fully expect you guys would be willing to do longer runs from time to time. Ya know, if you wanted to be REALLY insane.)

That's the joke. The story is basically high science Wile E. Coyote vs. the Roadruner.
2. Also, there was no B story for 3/5 to make room for a Red 5 comic promo. Is this going to become a regular thing now? I hope not.
You have it backwards. The promo was there because there was no B-Story because the artist fell through at the last minute and we needed something on those pages.
3. Is the 5 issue volume format going to be the main format for the foreseeable future? (Although I fully expect you guys would be willing to do longer runs from time to time. Ya know, if you wanted to be REALLY insane.)
Nope. There is no format, we just do as many issues as we need to tell the story we want.
Volume 2 was originally four issues. We tried to shoot for six but really only felt confident that we had five issues of content, so we went with five. Volume 3 just worked out to five issues from the start. Volume 4 will be four issues. We haven't hacked out specifics on Vol 5 yet, so no idea there.

Jenkins is the Man.
He uses a bookmark while making calamari as people's hamburgers and colas are eating them.
He. Is. The. Man. (And so is Scott Wegener for squeezing stuff like that in.)Is that so?
Disappointed in the finale though. But then again, that's the mark of Clevinger.
He only gives us just enough to make us want more. That genius bastard.

Just finished it (I know, I'm slow). Fantastic dialogue as always, Jenkins is win, ending was satisfying to me. Just one question, and it doesn't really apply to SFBT. Is there anywhere I can get the DoW #1 variant edition? I've scoured eBay and nabbed some Free Comic Book Day editions I missed, but that one continues to elude me.
