View Full Version : Proof That There's No More Money In Video Game Movies
Ladies, gentlemen and everyone who uses NPF, I give you the Monopoly movie, (http://www.cinematical.com/2007/08/06/ridley-scott-talks-monopoly-movie/) a movie based on the board game. It's also being directed by Ridley Scott.
...Is this a huge joke that I'm not in on?

I'm envisioning Scrooge McDuck for some reason for this movie...

This could either be awesome or utterly terrible.
This is the kind of thing that came out of 70s German cinema which varied between awesome and terrible.
I just want more information. Cause I don't know what to think right now.
I'm hoping it'll be focused on the cut throat world of professional monopoly players.

I'm thinking it will be a comedy/drama about the behind-the-scenes world of real estate.
...
What?

What you don't realise yet is that it will be a satirical film about the current world economy.
The story will start with a housing crisis as a result of the people living beyond their means and the result of a Monetary policy (Which is a result of the magical Monopoly bank!). This is a result of Mr. Monopoly being kidnapped by the main antagonist Mr. Automobile, capitalising on the current crisis who wishes to have all the Monopoly money for himself for he is greedy (They'll be needing an angle to target the Children so they can understand all this.) Our main protagonist Mr. To-To finds himself homeless as a result of the Housing crisis pushing up the standard of living to where he can no longer afford it, with a bit of swindling by the hand-er ... tire of Mr. Automobile.
Seeking justice from this act, he travels to Free Parking where he is taught by Sifu Ship, The Master of the Austrian School of economics, who will train our young hero in his arts. On his way around the board Mr. To-to meets lots of interesting characters and find a friend in Boot-Boot!
The climax of the film is Mr. Automobile buying the last purple tile and building a hotel it, dooming the Monopoly board once and for all. After a climatic debate about the nature of the economic crisis, and whether this is response for it to become more regulated or that the policy for the last few decades has caused this whole fiasco with the help of some special interest groups, which should be mean there should be a fundamental change to the financial policy after a fierce debate Mr. Toto lies defeated then and in the villain's moment of victory, suddenly Mr. Automobile lands on a chance card that reads:
"We the people reject your economic policies and not putting our interests first, go back 9 spaces."
To his horror this is in fact the Go To Jail square, thwarting his plans and releasing his hold of all his property.
Mr. Monopoly is freed and Mr. Toto is known as a hero who goes home to purchase his tile again. Economic change occurs, stability is restored and happy times are abound.
That'd be a totally rad film, they should hire me as the script writer.
You saw it here first folks!

Hey, it worked for Clue.
Because Cluedo is a murder mystery which is a well established film genre perhaps?
It has a story that can be used.
The story of Monopoly is a bunch of fatcats buying real-estate. You could make a film about a bunch of fatcats buying real-estate but it wouldn't have any particular ties to monopoly.

This is quite possibly the lulziest fucking thing I've heard all week, and I will be eagerly anticipating what will inevitably be the biggest shit-fest of the century.

People, Disney made a theme park ride into a pretty decent movie. Now I'm not going to say this is going to be any good, but its way too premature to condemn the project yet. As has been pointed out, Clue was a decent movie. (And yes, it counts in my book. It borrows enough elements from the game that I'm hard pressed to think otherwise.)
Yes, its very possible this will just be Hollywood cashing in as usual, but again, I think its way too early to say this thing is doomed from the start.

This could potentially be pure awesome, but only if it takes itself 100% seriously. It has to have enough of the board game woven into its plot for it to be fucked up, and then get through the whole thing with a straight face. If it laughs at itself, it won't work.

You think this is pathetic? Michael Bay is doing a Ouija board movie. They licensed 4 games to be made into movies, with these two being the only ones announced.

I for one look forward to the remake of Snakes and Ladders; Kerplunk also as the next year's Summer Blockbuster Action-Thriller.

I thought the Ouija board was already covered by The Exorcist. Obviously it leads to Captain Howdy, not explosions.

And now... what Ridly Scot thinks of the Monopoly movie
“Monopoly is still the most popular board game — I might be misquoting! — in the world. So it’s really finding the universe for that game. Because clearly it ought to be humorous and for the family — the funny way it brings out, particularly when your uncle suddenly gets Park Lane and — in England, we have Park Lane, Mayfair and Barclay Square, what’s it in America? Park and Madison? So you watch people change. You’re witness to Jekyll and Hyde. Somewhere in that is a hysterically amusing and I think rather exciting film.”
What's next - The Game Of Life? Connect Four? Backgammon? Parcheesi?

In response to the person thinking that he's talking about Boardwalk/Park Place, I hope not. They really aren't the best properties (orange and red ftw).
That said, I would like to restate PotC as an example of how this isn't actually that stupid. If nothing else, the loose restrains on what the writer can do (as apposed to doing a movie based off of a book or whatever) lets the writer's creative juices flow free.
Also of note, the director/writer in question isn't a hack. You should believe that he has some idea of what he's doing.
EDIT: Also, I now want to, honest to god, see a well-made Chess movie.

No, 16 versus 16 play with specific roles with retarded emphasis on the king and witty banter. Kind of like the shit I saw once when I decided to go to a Renaissance Fair.

Hey, it worked for Clue.
Yes but even the game clue had a PLOT.
Then again the game monopoly has no plot, but neither do most ridley scott movies...so it might work out fine.

We have more than enough of this for a Hippo movie. And that scathing crit was already done in Wall Street.

Chance and community chest, how they will fit them there? And who is going to win beauty contest, hm?
But seriously speaking if movie about chess is made, I think one of the problems will be that which side will win. Also, both sides need to be evil warmongers.
