View Full Version : Recognize an underrated character

There's always characters who you KNOW are the heroes, and they're great and all, but the ones who really impress you are the underdogs; the guys who aren't main characters, and aren't at all suited for their tasks, but still manage to win against impossible odds. This thread is for those characters. Note that anyone who has their name in the title, or is clearly the story's chief protagonist doesn't count.
I'd like to start with the character who gave me the idea for this thread; Ratchet, from the G1 Transformers comics. He had no combat skill and no weapons to speak of, but he defeated Megatron and the Decepticons multiple times all by himself, twice when the Autobots had already been more or less slaughtered to a man. This guy charge attacked Megatron and punched out Starscream.
He may not have had any power to speak of, essentially being the party cleric, but Ratchet had a giant pair of steel balls to go with his giant steel body. Even Megatron himself admitted it.
How many heroes do you know who went through THIS (http://images.encyclopediadramatica.com/images/6/63/Tfsex.jpg)?

Xander Harris.
I always enjoyed how he was the heart of the whole Buffy team despite having no actual powers or abilities or actually really being at all useful in any strictly definable capacity aside from a willingness to throw himself into danger for the sake of his friends.
It sucked in the later seasons when they made him kind of a chump.

I agree wholeheartedly with Bit's post, except that you should replace the posted picture with the one where he jumps up and clocks Starscream in the fucking chin. Absolutely hardcore.

I like the picture I used, because it's the kind of thing that almost never happens to a primary protagonist. In some ways, secondary characters are less limited.

Dude.
He's decking Starscream.
How hardcore is that.

Sure, you can laugh at him, but it doesn't change the fact that after stealing the Dai-Gunzan, the Dai-Gurren Brigade had to hook the entire battleship up to the only power source capable of sustaining it, namely Attenborough's immense balls.

Ando from Heros totally deserves this. I haven't seen this weeks episode yet, but it looks like he'll be getting some more due. But seriously this guy might complain about a lot of things and be (quite frankly) practice in his non-heroic approach to life. But when Hiro needs him in a pinch he's there with out a moments hesitation. He's practically become the icon of a best friend:
Sure you might think your friend's stupid or crazy or immature; but you know what, that's your friend and you stick with them for no better reason then that.
That's practically his motto. And he deserves a metal for it.
Xander also pretty well defines this thread too.

Norris Packard from Mobile Suit Gundam 08th MS team.
He's this forty-something-year-old guy with a beer gut who also happens to be hell on legs.

Fuck yes. Shooting every single missile a giant robot has is a perfect strategy when it can make missiles out of resolve. Why didn't everyone else notice it? They never run out of missiles, why save them up!?
