Let's play a little game... who can tell me in which sentence can we define that this movie is going to suck?

The MovieSet Blog has learned details about the latest video game to be turned into a movie and no, Uwe Boll is nowhere near this project’s set (hey, speaking of Mr. Boll whatever happened to the release of Far Cry?) The film is called King of Fighters and is based on the SNK Playmore arcade fighting game that debuted in 1994 and has spawned 11 sequels and 13 — yeah, you read that right — 13 spinoff games. By comparison, Capcom’s Street Fighter and Midway’s Mortal Kombat brawler franchises are still in the single digits with their sequels.

Learn all the cast, crew and story details after the jump, player!

The King of Fighters movie quietly began filming in Vancouver, Canada on November 27 under the eye of director Gordon Chan, the dynamic Hong Kong-born helmer of Fist of Legend, Beast Cop and the 2003 Jackie Chan movie The Medallion. The screenplay is by newcomer Rita Augustine.

The movie stars Maggie Q (Live Free and Die Hard), Sean Faris (Never Back Down), Will Yun Lee (Elektra), Francoise Yip (Aliens vs. Predator - Requiem), Monique Ganderton (Supernatural) and the coolest Sith Lord ever, Ray Park (a.k.a. Darth Maul from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace). It also looks like the King of Fighters movie will introduce a new science fiction spin into the setting established in the games’ universe by following the surviving members of three legendary fighting clans who are continually whisked away to other dimensions by an evil power. As the fighters enter each new world they battle that universe’s native defenders, while the force that brought them seeks to find a way to invade and infect our world. Pardon me while I show how much of a nerd I am but it kind of sounds like a little bit of Highlander and Marvel’s Exiles comic book series. Not that I’m complaining, I’m just sayin’.

Joseph Chou, Tim Kwok and Bobby Sheng are the film’s producers. The movie is targeted for a 2010 release.

Ok, let me take a stab at it...

What do I win?I'd say it's more around the thread title, where it says a game is going to be turned into a movie.

If I was restricted to the paragraph though, I'd say yes, EVILNess got me.

"It also looks like the King of Fighters movie will introduce a new science fiction spin into the setting established in the games’ universe by following the surviving members of three legendary fighting clans who are continually whisked away to other dimensions by an evil power."

I'd say this is where things really start to go south.

Now, now, there is always the hope that they will eventually make a good video game movie. It is simply precedence and common sense which so cripple our enthusiasm.

This one is dead in the water simply due to its attempt to foist upon the plot science-fiction and fantasy elements, which is probably evidence of the fact that the plot lacked filmable substance in the first place.

One of the more "popular" video game movies, and one based on another fighting game, is the original Mortal Kombat film. It's "good" by comparison to pretty much every other video game film (though of course still lacking when stacked up to a lot of normal films). The reason that Mortal Kombat's plot works is it is based around a tournament. This is a successful plot device for a ton of plots, like your average kung-fu movie or '80s action film (Blood Sport, for example), or countless animes, and works best for a fighting video game's movie because it allows for the main form of action in the game, FIGHTING, to be the main subject of the movie, and also provides an excuse to bring together various fantastical characters (even "realistic" movies such as Blood Sport have a ridiculous cast of fighters who compete in the tournament, ranging from the tiny agile monkey-like guy to the giant brute and everywhere in between) in the same location. The additure of science-fiction elements to the plot is missing the point completely, and will only lead to failure.

Yeah, I'd say a KoF movie could work on a pure action standpoint, because you have K' and Mai. Get good actors for them with a properly skimpy outfit for Mai and you have a blockbuster right there. I mean you got a guy whose 'fighting style' is Pure Violence and a hot asian ninja chick who's almost naked. Perfect guy flick already. Add in all the other characters and make them all beat the snot out of each other in a tournament ala Blood Sport and you've got potential gold.

Trying to shove science fiction onto this shit, though? Aw hell no.

Dont forget the magic and Genetic conspiracy, there is people shooting fire, clones, cyborgs and genetic mutations!

Why the hell would they go for the one thing KOF dosent have? Sci-Fi? Pff....
