View Full Version : Pick An Album For Every Year You've Been Alive

Basically, for every year you've been alive, pick an album released that year for your list. Maybe it's something you like now, maybe it was your favorite back then, your choice, as long as it is in the correct year.
I spent my procrastinating time doing this, using Wikipedia's helpful timeline of music history (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_years_in_music), although it's not exactly as thorough as it could be at spots.
My list:
1987 - You're Living All Over Me - Dinosaur Jr.
1988 - Green - R.E.M.
1989 - Tweez - Slint
1990 - Changesbowie - David Bowie
1991 - Loveless - My Bloody Valentine
1992 - Wish - The Cure
1993 - Ultimate Alternative Wavers - Built to Spill
1994 - Dummy - Portishead
1995 - The Bends - Radiohead
1996 - Call the Doctor - Sleater-Kinney
1997 - Young Team - Mogwai
1998 - Black Star - Black Star
1999 - The Soft Bulletin - The Flaming Lips
2000 - Parachutes - Coldplay
2001 - Discovery - Daft Punk
2002 - You Forgot It in People - Broken Social Scene
2003 - The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place - Explosions in the Sky
2004 - College Dropout - Kanye West
2005 - Broken Social Scene - Broken Social Scene
2006 - Boys and Girls in America - The Hold Steady
2007 - From Here We Go Sublime - The Field
2008 (so far) - Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust - Sigur Rós
Things I Found:
- I'm pretty sure the reason my brother has such horrid music taste is probably due to his being born in 1990, a.k.a. The Year Where Nothing Particularly Good Came Out. I wouldn't be surprised if others born into the 1990 sonic void have similar taste defects.
- From about 2004 on I had to choose between about five different front runners for each year, which was almost as bad as having next to nothing to choose from.
- It's weird to scroll down the list of releases and see names pop up much sooner than you were expecting, although it's even weirder when you realize they're apparently hanging around far longer than is probably necessary.
- Watch for the shift in ratio between bands forming and bands disbanding.
- Ah Wikipedia, your democratization of history is so evident when you see which events get marked down as important.

Actually the list was easier than I thought.93 was mine too... Resorted to... comedy...
2005 was my easiest. I wanted to throw Funeral for a Friend's Hours in, but Kezia is lightyears ahead to me now.
Though they match in playcount on my itunes at about 50-60ish.
Nocturne has like 90-120.

2005 was like a dead zone for me. Too late for me to have heard of those who debuted that year and too early for stuff to still be floating around the radio and nobody I regularly listen to released an album that year. So I went with Birds cause it has a couple of nice songs on it.

Some of those years were really tough to decide, there were just so many good albums. Most notably the early 90's and early 2000's. Probably others, my mind is too fuzzy to remember right now, because, man, this took me, like, 2 hours to make. Also, I don't know what some of you are talking about, 2005 was my easiest year. 1993 was the hardest. It was practically a dead zone.

Damn this is hard. Trying not to pick an album based on only one song or just pick every U2, Weezer, or Matthew Sweet Album, this is what I came up with;
(1984) Fleetwood Mac, Fleetwood Mac
(1985) Fore!, Huey Lewis & The News
(1986) Slippery When Wet, Bon Jovi
(1987) The Joshua Tree, U2 (Fencer, nice one.)
(1988) Ramones Mania, Ramones
(1989) Full Moon Fever, Tom Petty (Now I'm FREEEEEE! Free Fallin'!)
(1990) Flood, They Might be Giants
(1991) Out Of Time, R.E.M.
(1992) Wish, The Cure
(1993) Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, Sarah McLachlin
(1994) Seal, Seal
(1995) 100% Fun, Matthew Sweet
(1996) Bringing Down the Horse, The Wallflowers
(1997) Spice Gir... No I'm sorry I can't even joke. Tubthumper, Chumbawamba... no wait! Aquarium, Aqua! ... Damn. 1997, not such a good year.
(1998) Dizzy Up The Girl, The Goo Goo Dolls
(1999) Supernatural, Carlos Santana + Various Artists
(2000) Everything You Want, Vertical Horizon (tech. a 1999 album)
(2001) Jimmy Eat World, Jimmy Eat World
(2002) A Rush of Blood To The Head, Coldplay
(2003) Give Up, The Postal Service (Good Call Fencer!)
(2004) Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, My Chemical Romance
(2005) Elevator, Hot Hot Heat
(2006) Nacho Libre Soundtrack, Various Artists (Special Mention: Mr. Loco's 'Hombre Religioso)
(2007) I can't find anything good for this year, so an alternate 2006 album is Stadium Arcadium, Red Hot Chili Peppers
(2008) Weezer (Red Album), Weezer
I'm seeing a lot of good stuff... also a lot of lists comprised of stuff that makes me feel violated in the ear too, but mostly good stuff! I will be updating my wishlist after this thread...
And screw you guys! 2005 had loads of good stuff. Stop watching MTV!

I think it was just Mcbarrelpant's who said it sucked and I was comically shocked. 1990 is the big agreed-upon suckfest, except for the people who say it didn't suck.
2001 - One More Time, Daft Punk
They...they had a whole CD of songs that year.

Naw you just need to look in the right genre to find the good '93 stuff. I take a pretty sharp turn into Adult Contemporary from Alt. Rock that year... but in '90, well, I found Flood but not much else... Maybe, um maybe Yanni had a good album that year? I don't really know.
They...they had a whole CD of songs that year.
I think he meant the whole Album. It's a self-titled disc, right?
No wait, it's called 'Discovery'. Yes.
