Alright, im curious, so far we've done favorite guitar players and favorite singers. So who is/are everyone's favorite song WRITERS?

I was thinking guys like Bob Dylan and Tom Waits, who have written hit songs that have been hits for themselves and for many different artists across many different genres, and guys like Shane MacGowan who may be singly responsible for the boom in irish music, and who wrote Fairytale of New York, one of the most amazing songs ever.

Waits has been covered by artists like Bruce Springsteen (Jersey Girl), Rod Stewart (Downtown Train), Patty Smyth, Lucinda Williams, Los Lobos, Elvis Costello, Meatloaf, Sarah McGloghlin, Diana Krall, Evernything but the Girl and more...

And Dylan, what needs to be said? Hendrix, George Harrison, U2, Neil Young, Greatful Dead, Springsteen, Clapton...the list goes on for miles

Shoot, I missed the singer thread? Well mine is Leonard Cohen - gotta love his voice. And on that note, Luciano Pavarotti.

Favorite lyricist? I'd have to go with Bruce Springsteen. I've been using him as an example of clever musical writing forever - just look at Jungleland! (http://www.lyricsdomain.com/2/bruce_springsteen/jungleland.html)

The Rangers had a homecoming
In Harlem late last night
And the Magic Rat drove his sleek machine
Over the Jersey state line
Barefoot girl sitting on the hood of a Dodge
Drinking warm beer in the soft summer rain
The Rat pulls into town rolls up his pants
Together they take a stab at romance
And disappear down Flamingo Lane
