I spent the weekend helping a friend transfer every episode of "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" he recorded on VHS oh so many years ago to DVDs and also editing out the commercials, and I must say that I forgot how awesome that show was.

Favorite episodes: "The Tale of the Many Faces", "The Tale of the Doll Maker", "The Tale of the Bookish Babysitter", and "The Tale of the Dead Man's Float".

I find it sad that this show would probably never get made today.

The main dude (Gary) on that for the first six seasons is a meteorologist on the weather channel now, strangely enough. I get a laugh every time I see him on there because I keep expecting him to say something like "This meeting of the Midnight Society is adjourned..."

Oh man does anyone remember that one about the kid who plays the pinball game that the spooky dude with the shop tells him not to and then he gets trapped in the mall that turns into a giant pinball game that he gets stuck in for the rest of eternity?

Damn, Nickelodeon used to do some totally great television.

That's my favourite episode ever, followed closely by the one where this guy is being followed by his dead ex-girlfriend, ending with him being also dead during all that time. Fun times.

I think we all pretty much agree that old school Nickelodeon was the best.

Even nearly two decades old, their old shows are still far better than the ones they show now.

Also - fuck, that little kid's laugh at the beginning of every show freaked me out as a kid.

My favorite episodes are "The Tale of Laughing in the Dark" and "The Tale of the Crimson Clown".

It's pretty much what made me afraid of clowns all through my childhood.

I remember one where they had some kind of magical glasses and when they put them on they could some kind of creatures that were invisible normally and were taking over the place. It was crazy shits.

They were actually from a parallel universe and then the characters tried to do a thing that would lock the weird parallel-universe people out of our universe but doing that LET THEM INTO OUR UNIVERSE oh man it was CRAZY.

My favorite part of that episode was when he put the glasses on at the basketball court and the crazy spandex people were playing basketball! They were all looking at him like what's your problem dude we just over here playin' some basketball.

Apparently there have been DVD releases of the show, and recent ones, but they seem to be rather hard to come by. I can only find them used on Amazon.

Avatar. >:

Also AYAOTD was one of the defining shows of my childhood and is objectively great.

Yes, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, The Adventures of Pete and Pete, and other such shows are better than Avatar, and telling yourself otherwise is just denying the truth and deluding yourself.

They aren't like so many other shows, held up only by nostalgia. No, they are truly good TV.

I'll maybe give you Pete and Pete, but fuck no Are You Afraid of the Dark wasn't better than Avatar. It was good, but it had a lot of hokey moments, honestly.

Was that the one where he finds some "laser gun" power-up and it's just a Super Soaker painted gold?

Fun story, the only comics I've ever bought were the origin comics for Speedball, because his was the lowest numbered comics I could find and I was thinking that if I got the beginning of a series it would be $$$ later on in my life.

So at some point between him chasing a bouncing cat and fighting slime men, my friend spilled water on my small collection. I quietly put them in a box, put the box into the garage, and never attempted to pick up the comics bug ever since.

Fuck you "The Tale of the Ghastly Grinner".

Avatar is a great show.

Really, it is.

Too bad it Nickelodeon never seems to show it anymore.

So, yeah. Better than anything they're showing right now.

Fairly Oddparents was great, especially the older ones. Their use of inside and running gags was superb.

Psh, Avatar is awesome for it's own reasons. (Coming back july 14th! Yayya~)

But avatar aside, Are You Afraid Of The Dark was pretty sweet. I don't remember very many episodes about it other than the one where he's stuck in the pinball machine.

The best part about that episode is after he wins the game he expects to be let out of the game, but nope, he's stuck there for eternity.

Fairly Oddparents was crap, especially the older ones. Their abuse and repetition of jokes driving them into the motherfucking ground over and over again when they aren't funny in the first place was awful.
I agree.

*cough* Anyway. Old Nickelodeon was great, but it stopped around the time they left on fairly oddparents and cancelled Invader Zim.

I have to argue vehemently against the very concept of any Nick show whatsoever being labeled somehow better than Rocko's Modern Life.

But AYAOTD was awesome. Largely because unlike the vast majority of shows totally, that show actually was imaginative enough to...uhm...require use of the imagination to write. I swear to God, most shows on Nick these days could be written better by the kids that watch them.

That reminds me.

Which has nothing to do with AYAotD. :D

Anyway, I like the one where the actor steals peoples faces leaving a featureless lump where it was, makes them wear china doll masks, and then puts them to work in her sweatshop.

Classic.

I remember one episode that literally kept me awake for about two or three days - the one where a school computer teacher makes a VR helmet, and invites two students to try it out - but one of the students puts a virus in it for the other; which is personified as a small, blue creature who tries to steal the students brain.

That was terrifying.
