I mostly just find people I know have similar music tastes to me, wait for them to champion a new band, and if I enjoy it I try to pass it on to people the original person doesn't know like I've got a hookup into a wellspring of undiscovered sonic gold.

I'm sure some methods out there might differ.

Mine involves having good music, looking at who was involved in the creation of it and see what else they've done. If nothing else you can play quite incredible games of Six Degrees that way. A friend of mine branched out this way from Nick Cave in all directions some time ago, and long story short we had exciting music coming in for years. I've held on to a lot of the stuff he found to this day.

More often than not it's my friends who introduce me to most musicians that I listen to. One of my friends is a huge music geek (not to mention the biggest Beatles fan I know), so I get lots of interesting songs through her.

Otherwise, actually AMVs have intoduced me to a lot of different songs that I like.

And very rarely I find a song on the radio that I like, and end up liking more from that artist. (I don't listen to the radio much, and when I do it's usually when I can't control the radio (such as the radio in the dining commons at college)

I blame a lot of my musical selections on commercials.

Pandora.com has helped me on a lot of the current bands I listen too. Also I read wikipedia a lot, and I look at the bands they associated with in the past and check them out too. So I guess the six degrees of separation helps a bunch when talking about music.

youtube hopping, for example: Looking up a band, going to related videos. If its not super popular, similar bands might be there. Also, find the label the band is signed to. There's a chance you'll find another band you like.

Myspace hopping: Look up a band on myspace, look in their top friends, people they are touring with, etc.

Most of my music comes from friends. In fact I had no real interest in music at all until I started getting sent stuff over MSN. Now though I do occasionally go looking for stuff relating to any bands I like, or anything related to music I hear on youtube vids (I watch a lot of gaming stuff like dmc truestyle vidoes and such which are good for finding decent music sometimes).

Also any tracks from movies and games which are particularly awesome I usually try and find.
