View Full Version : Death Cab For Cutie, And Other Such Unheard Of's
Anyone else hear of this band? I'm kinda liking their new single, "I Will Possess Your Heart." it's not too shabby.
View It Here. (http://youtube.com/watch?v=pq-yP7mb8UE)
I come from a musically diverse family, and while my brother is the indie lover of the family, he shares some of his stuff with me - and me being more knowledgeable about what I like rather than what something is or what category it fits into, I'm just going to dump most of who I'm talking about into a general collection of indie music:
Sufjam Stevens - John Wayne Gacy Jr. (http://youtube.com/watch?v=otx49Ko3fxw)
The New Pornographers - The Bleeding Heart Show (http://youtube.com/watch?v=dH9Q4fsZ1IY)
Lhasha - Anywhere On This Road (http://youtube.com/watch?v=LUiljQ-AnwI)
Imogen Heap - Hide And Seek (http://youtube.com/watch?v=5cpSv2mNhhc)
Josh Ritter - Wings (http://youtube.com/watch?v=WielcHDjNRM)
No More Kings - Michael (Jump In) (http://youtube.com/watch?v=tp6o5I99Idw)
I may not know much about these artists other stuff or the artists themselves, but I do really like these songs. What are some other artists you've heard that you don't think that others have heard of?

"Death Cab For Cutie" is an unheard of? Anytime any internet thread starts talking about the big names in indie music, that's right up there, along with all the bands with inexplicable exclamation points in their name.
I'll throw one on the "Unheard Of" pile... Grady, blues-country-rock-metal out of Houston, Texas. They WERE scheduled to play a show in my town until the drummer had a massive stroke the week before, and now they might never play here. *grumble*
Grady - Woman Got My Devil (http://youtube.com/watch?v=oeeXQ_iqBE4)
Also a good addition: Truckfighters. I've never been more proud to be Swedish.
Truckfighters - Traffic (http://youtube.com/watch?v=KYd3jP-AbaA) (only because I can't find a video for Atomic, Kickdown OR Gweedo Weedo)

Yeah, Death Cab for Cutie is pretty known with the people I hang out with.

This is going to be one of those things where it becomes all about everybody's different standards of known-ness, isn't it?
Now wait, let me rephrase this:
Guys let's not make this one of those things where it becomes all about everyone's different standards of known-ness.
For every given band that lots of people don't know about there's going to be a given group of people that do know about them which doesn't change that a whole lot of other people don't know about them so let's all try and get past that.
I mean if someone comes in here and gets all like "Have you heard of this great new band Nickelback!" then that's clearly just dumb but aside from that.
For my part I've recently come to the conclusion that Coheed and Cambria is a totally great band despite my previous less-enthusiastic viewpoint on the subject. I don't know where they rank on a scale of people knowing about them but they're not much a band I tend to hear about people knowing about.

It seems that everyone on Rock Band knows and LOOOOOOOOOOOVES Coheed and Cambria, so much so that they'll play Welcome Home, then something else, then Welcome Home again. Rinse and repeat until you leave, only to join another server doing the same thing. In short, Welcome Home is ok the first three times, but once you've played it six times in two and a half hours, it really starts to grate.
Anywho, my unknown band is Bomb the Music Industry! (http://www.bombthemusicindustry.com), (although, I have been on about them for quite a while now). They give all their music away for free from their website.
I Don't Love You Anymore (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=qhlYp10om-Y&feature=related) - A more doo-bop style from their usual, but a great song.
FREEEEEEEEEBIIIIIRRRDDDDD (x2) (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=l4RebDpvVcg&feature=related) - What most of their songs are like; Awesome Synth/Ska/Punk songs.
Future 86 (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=SjQ_8u2iX1k&feature=related) - A cover of one of their songs, but that girl can actually sing.
Anywhere I lay My Head (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=_6EXkfWrzW8&feature=related) - A cover of a Tom Waits song, where they manage to take the worst singing ever, and make it so awesome it's untrue.

Deathcab rocks. Other bands I like that are kind of the same style are: Modest Mouse (widely popular), Postal Service (well known in some circles), Say Anything (pretty well known), Hellogoodbye (you know it if you're a chick), and Panic at the Disco (really popular).
I'm not a huge fan of them all, but I like that style of music. A band you might not know of is The Diggs, they're rock is very simple and melodic, compared to some of the awful bands playing these days. I also like Action Action, but there are a lot of drug references in their music that some wouldn't appreciate.

-pokes in- Heh I saw Death Cab for Cutie and I jut happened to wanted to see what else was mentioned.
I don't have a link to one that i know is really rare to find; the band is called Our False Heroes. Those that live near the south east of Michigan might know them or a few I've thrown a song at, but I don't think they've hit the main stream yet. My friend happens to know the band and she sent me the songs. ^-^
edit - Oh hey I totally forgot they had a youtube account. *Dork* http://www.youtube.com/user/ourfalseheroes -/edit
Other than that I can't really think of any that aren't known of via atleast one song because they've all recently gotten into big things like the movies and guitar hero and stuff.
edit - also found another one dunno where these guys are today but they're from the same area as Our False Heroes; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YNzXNs3ClDc - Closer Enemies
Aw shucks - I wanted to go link hunting.
That being said, most of you are now responsible for there not being enough space on my PSP for Lackadaisy pictures!

Stop kidding like Lackadaisy is anything other than totally great; it's not fooling anybody.
I had an avatar from Lackadaisy awhile back, it was way better than Death Cab For Cutie.

Sufjam Stevens - John Wayne Gacy Jr. (http://youtube.com/watch?v=otx49Ko3fxw)Okay first of, a little nitpick, but it's Sufjan, unsure if that's a typo or not though. But really, great call on Sufjan, and Kudos on picking a track that isn't "Chicago", because, while "Chicago" is totally great, it kind of overshadows the other songs in the exposure it gets.
One of my favorite bands is Soul Coughing. They've had a couple of songs that got wide radio play, most notably "Circles" (http://youtube.com/watch?v=L_Ve9h1HNBA). It's hard to describe the genre of music they fall into, but it's a great place to be.
Animal Collective is great, if you like your songs to be more experimental and even harder to classify. "Peacebone" (http://youtube.com/watch?v=fxvGHQHiY70), "Water Curses" (http://youtube.com/watch?v=h7GZLRxVzvg).

Well, I'm pretty sure of Montreal (http://www.ofmontreal.net) is one of the better known indie bands, but in case someone hasn't heard of them... You can listen to their newest album here: http://polyvinylrecords.com/hissing/
I also enjoy Robots in Disguise: http://www.robotsindisguise.co.uk/ (my god, that is an awful site, but you can listen to some of their songs there, so.) Also: Arguments (http://youtube.com/watch?v=i0Sd9P5ntnQ). This song is amusing.

Jason Mraz. I don't mean "The Remedy" or "I'm Yours". I mean, his real stuff, like "Galaxy", and "Dead End", and "Dreamlife of Rand McNally", and "Gypsy MC".
But, re: the topic title, yeah, like others have said, DCC is pretty famous around here. They're not bad, but i'm not such a huge fan. They're okay. they have their good songs and a lot more meh songs.

I really think his best is "Illinoise." (http://youtube.com/watch?v=poXdW6g5WK0&feature=related)

Animal Collective is great
Very true, although I'd recommend that any potential new listeners should work backwards through their discography, as the more recent albums are much more accessible. In fact, starting with Panda Bear's (an Animal Collective founder) Person Pitch wouldn't be a bad idea either.
I'd also recommend that everyone should check out both of the Broken Social Scene records (You Forgot it in People and their self-titled), and then go comb through the other bands (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broken_Social_Scene#Related_acts) the members are a part of, as there is something for everyone.

About five years ago or so my friend and I tried to go see Deathcab on my birthday. Very unfortunately it was all-agers show and the children were so irritating that I couldnt even stand being in line...So we left and went a few miles down the street to watched Michale Grave's then new band, Gotham Road.
As far as Indie rock, I am currently enjoying the new Bob Mould album.

Gonna submit my latest auditory obsessions: cEvin Key (http://youtube.com/watch?v=zvnk-l9Q-Ds), Dismantled (http://www.myspace.com/dismantled), and Stromkern (http://www.myspace.com/stromkern).
I'm a huge fan when it comes to detailed auditory layering and these three are nothing short of amazing. I can listen to these guys for days on end and almost always pick out a new sound amidst the myriad of it all.
[edit] Shoot. My bad, didn't see the date of the last post. Apologies if this is considered thread necromancy. Been taking a forum break and returning on sleep deprivation. A fail is me!
