So, i'm into metal. Problem is, most of what i listen to would be what most would call "mainstream". IE Dragonforce, Rhapsody, Dreamevil, Dream Theater, Hammerfall, Dimmu Borgir, Yngwie Malmstein, etc. So what i'm looking for is some NEW metal to listen to. I have only 3 rules about it though.
1) No screamo.
2) I have to be able to understand what the singer is saying.
3) No death/black metal.
Now get suggesting!

...
No death metal or screamo?
Have your tried Children of Bottom? That might not be how you spell their name, but they rock fairly hard.

You mean Children of Bodom? If so, then I would have to agree. I really favor Sixpounder, although it might be pushing it on the "Understanding what they're saying" rule.

YES!! That is the one. I have a couple songs by them that were mislabeled and I could never remember what the name was.

Jethro Tull.

Would you qualify Type O Negative as Metal?
Also, seconded on Tull. Any band that goes through 6 flutes a concert and has the song "Broadsword" deserves your listening (not to mention their multitude of other songs consisting of raw awesome put to music).

You like metal and yet you dont listen to Metallica? For shame. They're popular for a reason.

Depends on the album. Anything after Reload is altogether unlistenable to me, and I've been told I'm too easy on them in that regard on multiple occasions.

Besides the obvious Slayer...
Cage. (http://youtube.com/watch?v=fynbLucoa2I)
Iced Earth (http://youtube.com/watch?v=jUKsDxitoiQ)
Testament (http://youtube.com/watch?v=ftnKaee8KTI)
And of course Machinae Supremacy (http://youtube.com/watch?v=JWEN_aZpBr4)
"I Have To Understand" might exclude foreign language groups, if so you're really missing out on...
Rammstein (http://youtube.com/watch?v=p7tjw5Au1bc)
Sex Machineguns (http://youtube.com/watch?v=biB8SMPJNYA)
Maximum The Hormone (http://youtube.com/watch?v=RynZ_g8CyQY)
You're welcome.
EDIT- If you want to try death metal, and I mean GOOD death metal, I got plenty of examples of that.
Also, Cliff Burton Metallica = Win
Puppets = Also win
Black Album = Slightly Less Win
Everything Else = No.
I will say, though, that St. Anger is a VERY underrated album. There's a couple songs there I think are good.
Such as:
Sweet Amber (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Ty70vPBXtno)
All Within My Hands (http://youtube.com/watch?v=vHnZ-uCsr_c&feature=related)
I'd recommend Dethklok. For a band that doesn't really exist, they kick all kinds of ass.
Although it IS death metal...

Reload is their best. I really fail to see what is wrong with it.

Reload was far from their best.
EDIT- Even by their own admission, it's the songs that weren't good enough to be on Load.
Also, I second Dethklok (http://youtube.com/watch?v=h6bGOBIW5PE)

Reload is their best. I really fail to see what is wrong with it.What Bizzaro Universe do you hail from? Have you never listened to Metallica (aka The Black Album), or Master of Puppets, or Ride The Lightning, or anything else that they released before Load?
As for Metal, and this is may be brderline for you, but I've always liked Tool.
Another choice I like is Body Count, a heavy metal group founded by Ice T, made infamous for thier controversial protest song "Cop Killer".

I have every Pre-Load album, and I prefer Reload.

Uh, what's screamo to you? Everyone I know has a diferent definition.
To me, screamo is like... early Funeral for a Friend, or Finch, or like From First to Last, or kind of Atreyu. Anything generally emo with screaming. Hence scream+emo = screamo. But a lot of people use it as anything with screaming vocals, which I would go so far to say encompasses growls as well. So, if it's the former, the emo+screams, then I would suggest The Human Abstract, definately one of my favorite bands.
If its the latter, anything with screaming vocals, check out Mercenary's The Hours That Remain. It's a fuckin' sweet album.
Some good Prog-semideath is Opeth, which I think you might like despite your criteria, if you haven't already listened.

My definition of screamo is anything that sounds like the singer just screaming, instead of actual understandable vocalizing.

I'm not much of a metal aficionado, but I would recommend Blind Guardian if you haven't listened to them yet.

Whenever I think Ride the Lightning, instead of thinking of metallica, I think forward, down, back, forward, Hard Slash, "Raidu za Lighteneing!"
Anyway.
Avoid Slipknot like the plague that they no doubt are. Killswitch Engage is pretty awesome, and I second pretty much everything that's been said in the thread so far.

Slipknot isn't even metal, so yeah.
Blind Guardian... they're sometimes metal, but sometimes they're kind of... well... mideval-style music.
As long as you know what you're getting into though, Blind Guardian is awesome.

I happen to like Arch Enemy's Anthems of Rebellion album, but that might be a tad over into the Death Metal scene. Also In Flames rocks a whole bunch.

I still listen to Spineshank, one of my all time favorites. =)
Other bands:Trivium (Ascendancy), Disturbed (Ten Thousand Fists), Amorphis (Eclipse), Alestorm (Captain Morgan's Revenge), Soilwork, Avenged Sevenfold, Soil (Scars), Ill Nino, In Flames, ... and so on, there are so many great bands.
But most of them aren't new and probably mainstream by now. I just listen to what sounds good.

Based on your list I also say Blind Guardian.
... are none of you saying Iron Maiden because you don't recommend Iron Maiden or because it's so obvious?

My definition of screamo is anything that sounds like the singer just screaming, instead of actual understandable vocalizing. Its really an acquired ability, like being able to understand fast rap.
Unless its like As I Lay Dying. You can never understand them.
Some bands are better at articulating while screaming. For example, Lamb of God.
But yeah, go check out Mercenary's album The Hours that Remain. It's like pretty awesome.
Also, Sonata Arctica.

If I may recommend a band.
Apocalyptica. Particularly their third album Cult. They have quite a few other things, and I'm not sure you would call them metal, but they do have some covers of Metallica songs and well I think they are close enough that you might like them.
Personal favorite off the third album. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUrW5TikUGw)
Also, its kind of funny to watch people play Cellos and headbanging.

Yeah, I was thinking about recommending Apocalyptica too, but I didn't know if they counted as metal.

The thought had occurred to me.

Well when someone asks for good metal, it's something that doesn't really need to be said. By declaring that you need good metal, Iron Maiden is already said without things being spoken.
I had assumed that Maiden was understood.

Scorpions isnt exactly Metal, but their more aggresive stuff is definitely "headbangworthy."

Id also reccomend the Guilty Gear XX OST. It has no lyrics, but its some damn fine metal. The series creator was a metalhead himself even. The games are pretty sweet to.
