View Full Version : Commercials, And How You Can Rid Yourself Of Them
Alternate thread title - VH1 Presents Commercials: Where Are They Now?
Now, I like some TV shows. I think that some of them are clever, funny charming or just well written. If I like a show enough, I'll buy a box set of it. My first box set was Jekyll, but then I started piling them on:
Family Guy Volumes I, II, III, IV
The Simpson's Seasons 6 & 7
Ren And Stimpy Season 1 & 2
Invader Zim Complete Set
Clone High Complete Set
Now, you'll notice that those are pretty much all animated. Don't ask me why. However, every one of them, with the exception of Jekyll and Zim, was purchased second hand. God I love thrift stores. I was just wondering what box sets you guys have, and what your favorite is. Mine is Jekyll! (http://youtube.com/watch?v=a7R2NhgEeg0&feature=related)

I've got a bunch, mostly sitcoms since I think they hold up the best over repeat viewings. Whenever I get bored I'll pop in How I Met Your Mother or The Office. I remember being really excited when Scrubs first came out on DVD, but ever since it went into syndication, and the general shittiness of the last 3 and a half seasons wearing down my fanboyism to general amusement, I don't feel the need to utilize those as much.
My pride and joy are the three seasons of Arrested Development. Perfect for hooking friends on the show.
I think I'll eventually get the complete 5 season box set of The Wire if/when it ever comes out, but I need to let it settle for a little bit.

Note that Heroes season 1 is currently on loan to a friend and that these pics were taken before I bought the first 3 seasons of The Dead Zone, so they're not shown here.
Yes, I like my tv boxsets.

Ah, tv on DVD. Truly a godsend.
I now present a list of every tv on DVD package I own:
Seasons 3 through 7 of the Simpsons.
The entirety of Futurama.
The entirety of Firefly.
Seasons 1 and 2 of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Seasons 1 through 6 of Curb your Enthusiasm.
The entirety of Trinity Blood.
Season 2 of Rocky & Bullwinkle & Friends. Okay, actually, my dad bought that one, because he used to like Rocky & Bullwinkle as a kid, but then he gave it to me.
Also, my older brother owns every season of Family Guy, Rescue Me, Chappelle's Show, and Scrubs that's available on DVD. We swap shows every now and then.
Y'know, Hawk, there's support groups out there.

Damn, Hawk, did Region 2 never get the SG-1 slimpaks? I've got seasons 1 and 2 in the big ol' boxes like that, but all the ones after are slim. I know in Region 1 at least MGM was gonna do a box-replacement thing, but then they got bought out by Sony and it went under the table (so far as I know, that is).
Anywas, I don't have a camera ready, plus my DVDs are all split up (by genre) and alphabetized, so my TV on DVD sets would be hard to see anyways. So I'll just do a rundown list. EDIT: Damn, that's a bigger list than I thought it'd be... And that's only a fraction of my DVD collection. I... I think I may have a problem.
~The 4400 season 1

I bought a couple of seasons of Alias less because of commercials and more because waiting between individual episodes of that show was horrible as that every fucking episode ended on a cliffhanger. In fact the best way to think of Alias is as a series of 3-act dramas except the first act starts fifteen minutes into the show which subsequently ends on the second act forcing you to tune in next week to see the end of the episode you started watching a week ago. Which of course fifteen minutes in turns into the beginning of the actual next episode and then there's just NO GODDAMN ESCAPE.

I buy DVD boxsets less for avoidance of commercials (they don't bother me, unless it's that damn Five Dollar Foot Long one from Subway), more for the option of watching these shows absolutely whenever I want. And some of them you can't reliably find on TV anymore, if at all. Like my The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. DVDs, and my Arrested Development DVDs.
Y'know, Hawk, there's support groups out there.
I don't have time for them, I've got another 14 seasons of tv to get through!
Damn, Hawk, did Region 2 never get the SG-1 slimpaks?
If they did, they sure as hell didn't tell me. This is perhaps the only reason why I wish they would start releasing stuff on blu-ray, so it can be condensed into a couple of discs per season.
Alias rant.
I too know this pain, but for me it was even worse; the last two seasons were never even aired over here, which forced me to go out and buy them anyway. Also I missed a few episodes, and with Alias, if you miss even one you might as well just give up on the season, 'cos you ain't gona figure out what the fuck's going on from that point on.
Oh and I love how Firefly seems to be the most popular boxset in this thread. Does EVERYONE own that show or what?!

My local Target is trying to get rid of its copies of Firefly, so they were selling them 25 bucks a piece. I thought, "That's a steal!" and bought it not too long ago.
That's my explanation, anyways.

I really didn't buy it in a boxset (because I'm dumb), but I have the entire first season of Fullmetal Alchemist on DVD (and the rest of it tape recorded on VHS)
And other than that... I have no TV shows on DVD (other than a DVD of Invader Zim), because I don't watch TV that much. However, I think I'm probably going to buy the Avatar box set once all of the DVDs are out.

I've never even seen an entire episode.
I did enjoy the movie, though.

I've got:
Scrubs - Season 1
The Fast Show - Complete set
Some Futerama Collection DVD
and...... Firefly
dun dun derrr!
I'd like to get more but watching things for free on the internet taunts me whenever I spend cash on these things. Most of the time I get these things for birthday/Christmas presents because I can't think of anything else I need that's reasonably priced.

TV on DVD?
Let see...I got:
24 - Seasons 1 & 5
Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Season 1
Roughnecks: The Starship Trooper Chronicles - Season 1
Samurai Jack - Season 1, 2 & 3
Space: Above and Beyond - Season 1
Supernatural - Seasons 1 & 2
Transformers: Beast Wars - Season 1
...and, yes...Firefly.
This is not counting anime, however. If I add that in, the list grows to a perhaps unhealthy level.

Yes, Fight the power that is Fox, cancelling brilliant series like Firefly, Arrested Development, and Wonderfalls. Fight the power by owning them on DVD!

FIGHT THE POWER, MAN!
I have bought exactly one DVD boxset of all the many shows that I have acquired through other means.
It was Firefly.
Get it now.
@Fifth; Serenity was good, Firefly was better. Watch it when you have the chance.
Seil still fails.
When was Seil winning?
