Like the thread says, who are your favorite string-flickers?

I gotta be honest, I have been listening to a lot of Dinosaur Jr. lately, and that's mostly due to J. Mascis (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDPDsjrBYo8).

George Benson and Pat Metheny.

The first being a Jazz-Soul guitarist, the second being a Jazz-Fusion Guitarist.

Alexi Laiho and Miyavi, the intro to Miyavi's 'Selfish Love' is one of the coolest I have ever heard.

Tom Morello.

No George Harrison? Even with the recent Beatles thread, nobody has thought to mention George Harrison?

Seriously, he's probably the most technically proficient of the Fab Four (even if it took until after the breakup for his skills to fully mature). Go and listen to All Things Must Pass, or his self-titled album, or Cloud Nine, or Brainwashed (which was released after he died--Jeff Lynne and his son Dhani finished it). The man had talent--and more importantly, he worked quite hard to constantly improve himself.

Buckethead. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dz9FKIIaoQU) Partially because he's a wierd mother fucker, but mostly cause he's good at shredding in the no-melody sorta way.

Herman Li's also fucking dynamite. If you didn't recognize the name, how about the "What the fuck that can't be possible" guitarist from Dragonforce.

I don't know if he's in a band right now, but Lee Kyong Wong (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4mrPrsw24KE) is my current favorite, if only because he does Ken's SFII theme song, The Black Mages (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66hmgatRs4E&feature=related), Dynasty Warriors, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jp6rSUzke0E&feature=related) and in his best video yet, Guilty Gear XX (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qni092ZwOGs&feature=related). The dude gets bonus points for the fucking amazing video game music alone.

EDIT: Metal music makes me say "Fucking" alot.

Eric Johnson. I didn't start liking guitar hero until I played Cliffs of Dover (http://youtube.com/watch?v=55nAwmVLQSk).

And how could I forget Angus?

For favorite "guitarist", my vote's gonna have to go to Michael Winslow (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wga1nLKVlRs)..
It should be obvious as to who I'm actually talking about here.

I forget his name but I always really liked the guitarist from the Deftones. I thought he did a lot of interesting things. The crunchy-downtuned guitars thing has definitely gotten to be a bit of a cliche but they were doing it before everyone else was and always took it in some very non-cliche directions.

Also whoever is the guitarist from Queens of the Stone Age cause that band just blows your ears off with every song.

I'd like to say that so far all of you are wrong, the best guitarist is Narciso Yepes, he is a god and all other guitarists must bow down before him.

That is all.

Eric Clapton

If I could have the skill he has in his heroin-laden pinky finger, I'd still be awesome at guitar.

Mirai: You forgot this other piece of awesomeness (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2gIVk-ASEw&feature=related), from the same guy.

As for my personal favorites, there's quite a few that I'm especially fond of. I look up to Al Di Meola's elite picking skills and awesome jazz-fusion songs, Tom Morello's simply wtf playing techniques, and Eric Johnson, solely for his awesome feel-good tune Cliffs of Dover.

Other guitarists that I have to mention though are Herman Li, Slash, Steve Vai (won my heart with his Mjolnir Mix), Joe Satriani (Satch boogie ftw), Michael Angelo Batio (one of the fastest shredders, and I haven't yet seen someone match his ambidextrous skills).

No mention of Brian May? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSIR1O61DQQ&feature=related)
Seriously. This guy is the man and that isn't even his best solo, just the best I could remember off the top of my head.

Neil Young (http://youtube.com/watch?v=LYV6PAckr5w) plays a mean guitar and you should be ashamed for the lack of Neil Young in this thread.

There's really not much more I can say about that without gushing except if you have any self-respect you'll go out and watch Dead Man (http://youtube.com/watch?v=n6aCMgy0ES4&feature=related).

John Frusciante makes excellent music on his own. Not so much with the Red Hot Chili Peppers as far as I'm concerned, but most of his solo albums are really good. The more weird guitar sounds he makes on 'em, the higher the esteem I hold them in. This one's called Murderers (http://youtube.com/watch?v=uzCk31-XAfw&feature=related).

Jeffrey Lee Pierce of the Gun Club was another great one - youtube doesn't have anything from the Lucky Jim album, but try that if you get a chance. It's not typical for the band, but it features the best guitarwork.

Paul Waggoneer is pretty good, Chris Arp is tooYou win a cookie for Arp. More people need to know about him. His band, less so. XD

I'm gonna go for Luke Hoskin of Protest the Hero as one of my favorites. I don't know if he writes his stuff but he plays it. XD
