Mostly just rethreading to link to this (http://www.anime-planet.com/anirec/) which I thought people might enjoy.

I've just been going over some Ghibli films, so I'm obligated to recommend anything that studio has put out. It's surely been mentioned, but it deserves a repeat.

Seconded.
Oh yeah and since Fifthfiend mentioned a site that recommends anime, this site (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/)is good as an anime reference and news source.
Also, some good animes that I haven't mentioned before are: Mushishi, Clannad, and Samurai Champloo.

I'll throw in some recommendations I don't think I saw in the other thread:
Rahxephon: Sometimes called "Evangelion done right,"...but I haven't seen Eva all the way through, so I can't comment in that regard. Still, its a pretty good show, even if the last few episodes hurt your head.
Scrapped Princess: Fantasy with a sci-fi twist. Yeah, I know it sounds odd, but its a good show.
Full Metal Panic!: I don't think I saw anyone recommend this series, which makes me an unhappy camper. Both FMP! and FMP! Fumoffu are great. I haven't watched The Second Raid all the way through, but it doesn't seem to be as fun as the first two series.
Haibane Renmei: I don't know why, but this is a good series. I really don't know how to describe in a way that makes it sound interesting...but trust me, it is well worth you're time to watch it. Great soundtrack, too.
Martian Successor Nadesico: A bit of an oldie, but a funny show. Well...it starts out funny, but gets a little more serious towards the end. Along the way, however, it lampoons mecha anime cliches, to the point of having an anime series made-up for the show an important plot point. If you can, find the Anime Essentials version. The commentary on the first episode is golden.
Utawarerumono: Hard to spell, harder to pronounce, but a joy to watch.
Voices of a Distant Star: Great stuff, and only a half-hour long. Almost made me cry...almost. Honestly, though, if it would of lasted two minutes longer, there would of been tears.
EDIT:
Gah! How could I forget!
Ah! My Goddess!: Warm fuzzies in animated form. A great show to watch if you've had a really crappy day and need something to cheer to you up.
Fruits Basket: See above.

Ouran Host Club: Boy meets other boys. Boy accidentally breaks the other boys' vase. Boy joins the Host Club to pay off a massive debt. Boy turns out to really be a girl.
Hilarious antics ensue.

Very well.
*Ahem*
If you hate yourself, and enjoy watching things that are totally awful (I mean like, repeatedly slamming your head in the car door of a Buick awful), then Full Metal Panic is an anime you should watch. It takes a plot that becomes completely implausible after three goddamn episodes, stretches it out to twenty-four, then stretches out to an entire second fucking series, and still never manages to get the guy and the girl together. In fact its only actual accomplishment is to make you fucking loathe both characters so much that by the end you don't give two shits whether they do get together, though you are really hoping they both get thrown into a combine harvester. This show is directly responsible for the fact that Japanese people no longer know how to reproduce (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/4599071.stm).
And, done.

Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Full_Metal_Panic%3F_Fumoffu) is fun. Watch that one. You won't know who the characters are but fuck it it will make you laugh.
Yeah, I watched Fumoffu and didn't care on looking for the original. Bite me.

Oh man, Black Lagoon is fun times. And I'm not saying that just because it's everything I spend my entire working day wishing would happen.

I liked 'Loveless' but it's a Shounen-Ai and... well boys kiss but that's about the worst for NSFW.
I don't want it to but I seriously expect someone to tell me all the things wrong with it and why I shouldn't enjoy it.

Fumoffu is enjoyable; the rest of FMP, less so.
Utawarerumono isn't as good as the game, and passes over some important points for understanding stuff. I'd still recommend it, as long as the watcher isn't opposed to a bit of research.
Read or Die, both the series and the OVA. Charming and fun. I quite enjoyed it.

Mobile Suit Gundam: 08th MS Team
Zeta Gundam
Mobile Suit Gundam: Stardust memory
see the pattern?

Oh I have an anti-recommendation. You should NOT watch Patlabor unless you REALLY, REALLY like giant mechas. It's a show about giant mechas from the police fighting giant mechas from the criminals. It's also boooooooooring. Back to recommendating, Shakugan no Shana seems to be pretty good. I can't really explain it well though, but it's good.

I think we all had agreed that Gundam Wing takes precedence over all of those.
Street Fighter II: The Movie (the animated one)
Street Fighter II V (the V means VICTORY because it's a VICTORIOUS series)
Ignore the Street Fighter Alpha/Zero movie. It sucks.

fuck you, Wing is generic animu bullshit with far too much nostalgia linked to it. Amuro would fuck Heero up and make relena his bitch.

No, the worst for NSFW is the fact that one of the boys is like twelve and the other is in his twenties.
Honestly, it's a pretty well written show with beautiful animation, and I even found myself enjoying it sometimes. However, you have to be able to get past the pedophilia, which I, ultimately, could not, leaving most of it unwatched.
And, Jack? Ratchet it down a notch. I mean, I'm all for telling Regulas to go fuck himself or whatever. There are, however, rules against flamin' and I'm gonna give you the benefit of the doubt that you were just jokin' around, but it's really hard to see that there.
Also, Amuro was boring.

Samurai X OVA and it's "sequel" Ruroni Kenshin are always worth a watch.
Be warned though, Samurai X is the most gritty, gruesome, badass anime samurai fights around (Without going into Power Levels of 9000) and it all becomes a little more kiddie and fun with Ruroni Kenshin.

Street Fighter II: The Movie (the animated one)
Hmmmm... I wonder which part of that movie you liked the most :shifty:....
Also, I would like to add Scryed. Yes the story is shaky at some points and yes the main character is shallow, but dammit watch this series because of the sheer badassitude!
Oh and Gungrave. Why? Because it's fuckin' Gungrave...

I mentioned Gungrave before, but I'll support bananarama's restating of it again because it's that badass. Awesome soundtrack too.

I know it's technically not anime, but Gosei Sentai Dairanger is one of the best Super Sentai titles never to hit America. If you can find it subbed or can pick up enough Japanese to have an idea of what's going on, I highly recommend it.
Past that, as much flack as it takes, Outlaw Star isn't half bad, but my major recommendation is anything Tenchi. Except for Pretty Sammy. Unless you're a pedo into Japanese kindergarten students in sailor suits who thinks that Ryo-Ohki talking is a good idea and can stand something that disgustingly cutesy for more than five seconds without tearing your own eyes out, I do NOT recommend Pretty Sammy. However, I understand that there's a spin-off about a friend of Tenchi's who gets drafted into the Space Police that's absolutely hilarious.
EDIT: The newer series is called Tenchi Muyo! GXP.

See I would have recommended that too... if it weren't for the ending :( (yeah way to crush my hopes and kill any chance of a Season Two while giving us a crappy open-ended ending there, guy... guy is referring to whoever was the dipshit who chose to the end the series like that obviously...). But it was a great series nonetheless...
Oh yeah and Sexy Commando... you will watch...

Zangief screwdriving Blanka! That was fuckin' awesome!!
Oh and Gungrave. Why? Because it's fuckin' Gungrave...
Is that the one with the girls pulling off awesome gun choreography while recharging their firearms by popping ammunition from their breasts or am I thinking of some other animu?

Gungraves the one with the zombie gunman who lugs around his coffin which is actually a fuckin weapons system. At least the game was. The game also sucked, but maybe in manga form, where you dont have to play it, it'd be good, casue the concept is awesome.

That would be Grenadier (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=4443), my friend. (Y'know what's creppy? The main character with the huge rack is 16.... *shudders*)

Place Promised To Us in Our Early Days= Excellent movie. It nearly made me cry at the end, and because I didn't I was called 'heartless' and a basturd.
Tenjho Tenge= A good martial artsy kinda anime. Nice storyline.
Hellsing= Sorry. I thought I would state the obvious.
Genshiken= An amazing anime that reminds me of what my friends and I do all the time. I am, unfortunatly, Harunobu Madarame...>>
Ranma 1/2= If you like stale, yet funny characters...
Lupin III= A hilarious anime of criminal mishaps.
Cowboy Bebop= My favorite. Forever. Hands down.
DNAngel= I thought it was a little dumb at first, but as it went, it was pretty damned cool. Nice artwork.
These are just a few off the top of my head, I'll go home and look at my collection, then bring a list of good stuff. =)

Not really, thats the most fucked up piece of shit Ive ever seen, and if you watch, you pretty much have to hate being happy.
Now, for a good one, Gun X Sword. Its like some super badass mech thing but its also not and its hilarious.
