mp3 editing?

Does anyone know of a good way to take a sample from an mp3 file?
I want to skip the intro of a song and use the shortened version as a ringtone for my cellular.

You can do everything you described there and plenty of other effects too. It's completely free and open-source too which is a bonus (download links are on the wiki)

To save as MP3 you will have to download the LAME codec too, but there are instructions on how to do so on the Audacity website and it's easy and free as well.

I usually just convert the MP3 to WAV, edit that & then just covert back when done.
