So, this just popped up on my laptop, and tends to shut it down before I can even log on. Right now I'm posting from my friend's computer, because this seems really serious. I tried logging onto my last good configuration, which worked for a couple of minutes, but then my computer just shut down on its own accord again.

I'd be really appreciative if anyone could get back to me on this one quickly.

lsass.exe in your Windows/System32 folder is supposed to be there and working. If you have one running from any other directory, it could be the Sasser worm, which shuts down machines seemingly randomly.

Beyond that, since you're having the problem before even logging in, it seems as if the file itself might have been corrupted or some silliness and it's not actually anything at all related to the worm. I guess what I'd first do is try booting in safe mode and see how long you can go. If it doesn't come up/you still can't get in even in Safe Mode, then maybe there's something wrong with your account password/information (lsass is Local Security Authentication Server Service or some nonesense). Poking around (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=lsass.exe+errors&btnG=Search) might give you some ideas if there are similar symptoms.

Oh, hey, it's working now. I had all the errors that the link you had described, but for some reason the registry decided to work again. I'll keep this thread updated if anything happens, but thank [deity] it's working fine now.

Well, that's always good news. I hope it was just a fluke and doesn't come back.

I suggest downloading CCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/ It's a good and free registry cleaner that works even for Vista and all versions of Windows. I have been using it since I have Windows 98 and I have never had a problem with it. That and a clean registry really helps keep your computer running like new.

Ironically, I read this, shut down, rebooted and had an LSASS error myself- CCleaner, when booted in safe mode, fixed it.
