I was an idiot the other day and downloaded something I shouldn't have. Now I have an unknown virus (as determined by Norton) which isn't letting me click my taskbar or open Norton in the taskbar. It also placed a driver file named xxyyaxx.dll in my system32 folder.

I can't delete it (I've tried Killbox, spybot, adaware, Norton, and HijackThis to no avail) and I'm going to give it one last try tonight by removing the hard drive, placing it in an enclosure, and trying to crush it from my other machine.

Anyone know what the hell this is or ever heard of it before?

Well, first off, let me say don't put your hard drive on your other computer, even if it is in an enclosure. The nature of viruses is that it'll probably transfer over to your other computer and screw it up too.

If you're wanting to try something to delete it, try booting into safe mode (hey, it's worth a shot) or getting a linux live CD and using some console commands to try to kill it.

As to what specific virus you have, I couldn't tell for sure you at the moment. If you would post some symptoms that your computer is having, then I may be able to help a little more.

However, a quick Google search makes it sound like you may have Vundo. There's a vundo fixer program here for download. (http://www.atribune.org/content/view/24/2/)

Good luck. The last virus infestation I had caused me to reformat. Luckilly, it was just my Win2k computer I use as an internet router.

Coolness. My enclosure strategy worked and I was able to delete the undeletable files I found. I am now doing an online scan which has found more problems and after that I'll run RegistryFix.

I don't think I'll have to reformat, but if I do it's not the worst thing in the world. And I tried that Vundo uninstaller and it didn't find anything. Thanks for the help though.
