Speaketh unto me oh Avatar: The Last Airbender fans!
ARE YOU NOT EXCITED?!
I am excited.
So excited that my cats just looked at me funny.
Evil cats...
I personally anticipate that it'll pick up a few weeks after the events of Season 2 finale, with the first five minutes being a quick recap of what's happened during the break.
This would also help explain why Aang has hair now. That is not a spoiler, as all promotional images of Season 3 show him with hair. NOT A SPOILER CURSE YOUUU.

A blue arrow on the forehead does seem strange.
There will probably be more deaths this time around - and that really makes me wonder how they're going to deal with it.

The waits pretty bad.
Oh well, here's my review of the Box Set and Nick Mag.
Box Set:
Must have. The 3 shorts alone make it a very big draw. You also get an interview that kind of shows the friendly relationship between M. Night and the co-creators. Also, the Escape from the Spirit World is on there (just the comic parts, non-voiced).
Overall, I'd highly recommend it. Especially if you were waiting.
Nick Mag:
Has some decent comics that help set the tone for the 3rd season. I won't post spoilers in the thread, but I think they are worth picking up. If nothing else, it doesn't reveal anything TOO big.
It's only $5 in the US ($6 Canadian).
I think it's worth it.
So, yeah. Less than 35 hours to go.

It's not like it's that hard to deal with, they've already had plenty of people die on the show. There was Hahn, Soldier on the prison rig, all those fire nation soldiers who where attacking the Northern Air Temple, Yue, Zhao, that guy Appa threw into the artic ocean, Chin the Great, Proffesser Zhei, Jet, and possibly Suki.

I thought it was pretty great. It was mostly setup and backfill but they threw some nice action scenes in there. Toph flinging around the metal-bending ws pretty cool.
The big FIRE LORD'S FACE Z0MG reveal could have been less "well so um, yeah, here it is," and it was kind of annoying seeing Zuko still still getting played so hard by Azula. I mean would it be so bad for him to not be a total fuckin' chump for five minutes?
Anyway, it was nice seeing Yue again.

Indeed it was awesome, but not just showing Toph was awesome (we already knew that) but also the Katara is pretty powerful too, and lets not forget for once Saka got good karma. I didn't even think it was possible. I assumed the universe just hated him.
As for the short, best line "Now now, I think this shows all elements have their own strengths and weaknesses, also, FIRE IS THE BEST" *Runs*

Here it is on YouTube. Sorry about the Spanish Subs, tho.
As for the episode itself, it was full of angst omg. Aang is beginning to be like Zuko, especially the whole "OMG HONOR!!1one" thing. The whole thing was still pretty freakin' amazing. Though, there was that random Serpent from the Pass...how it miracously found them. XD

Oooeemmm
Mai & Zuko have always been kind of attached, even in their youth there was some semblence of a relationship with potential romance. It's something that was continually made fun of by Azula and the gymnastic butt whupper during season 2.
Katara is easily powerful as all heck, and anyone who whines that only the avatar seems to be getting stronger needs to be bonked on the forehead.
And did I not call the few weeks thing or what? Meroowww

Okay, here are some thoughts.
(First off, if you read the all avatar magazine, this episode is really well set up, because it explains in more detail about those weeks. Like why the Earth King left.)
Zuko: (spoilers)
Out of all the times that Azula has gotten one over on Zuko, this is one of those times that I can't really blame him. Azula told Ozai a version of the truth that would be good for him if it was true. Azula still gets the glory of Ba Sing Se once Aang is revealed to be alive. However, I'm far more interested in the upcoming episode. Zuko hires an assassin? Then again, he did hire Jun in season 1.
Also, why the surprise at Mai? They referenced it twice (Chapters 3 and 7). Read the all avatar nick mag if you want to see how they got together... and why.(Seriously)
Aang: (spoilers)
Of course they are making comparisons to Zuko. Doesn't everyone remember what they saw on Zuko's head during his feverdream? Zuko is as much a part of it as any of the gang. Just... the wrong part... for the most part... Nevermind.
In any case, he DIED. That kind of does a number to a 12 year old, I'm sure.
Azula: (spoilers)
Is now my favorite villain. Period. If you don't know why, you haven't been paying attention.
I read a review that had problems with the show, and I think the only flaw it might have is editing and/or pacing. However, when viewed from the larger context (Pre- and proceeding episdoes), I think it will work better. Certainly, I'm glad the they are already set to go in the Fire Nation. At least it didn't take 2+ episodes and drag on.
Can't wait til NEXT FRIDAY! SQUEEEEEEEEE!!!!

Anybody mind giving a synopsis of the comic? I thought they gave the appropriate amount of time to covering the in-between, but if there was anything cool/interesting, I'd like to know the details without buying a supplemental.
I thought this episode was a bit strained, what with coming off a kickass season finale and setting the stage for what looks to be a great final season, but it didn't succumb to wheelspinning, and for that I thank it.
Katara being pissed at her dad really surprised me, because the first time she snapped at him my first thought was "That is very not-Katara", and then I realized I have watched this show enough to be involved when a character makes a minor change in attitude. Her tear filled dual confession seemed a bit too forced, but I still felt bad for the situation she found herself in.
Yue showing up to encourage Aang and waterbend was pretty cool. Will further episodes have more episodes from those in the Spirit Realm? I know Yue's the only one that fully ascended as it were, but Jet had such a big personality...

Oh really? I thought it was a really well done scene. It was nice to see a character cry without making it all "WOH DRAMAZ", and getting worked up about something that they don't really understand is making them sad.
Of course I've been that way lately, so maybe it spoke to me more that way. ^^
Also, if someone does a summary of the comics, please be sure to spoiler-ize it, since I am still trying to find the magazine so I can read it on my own. ^^ Thanks.

This is all I found. Everyone is doing a good job not leaking out information so everybody would go out and buy the comics instead. Imma gonna buy one when I can find it, in hopes that Nick puts out more.
Anyway, this is what I got. (Don't click the links unless you want to see the comic page that goes with the summary)
"The Bridge"
Story by Josh Hamilton and Tim Hedrick with Aaron Ehasz. Script by Frank Pittarese. Art and Color by Reagan Lodge.
After the fall of Ba Sing Se, the gang meets up with Hakoda and the Water Tribe to plan their next move. With the Avatar wounded and out of commission do they stand a chance against the approaching Fire Nation fleets?
http://pokefananime.free.fr/avatar/journal/nickmag2_reagan.jpg
"Going Home Again"
Story by Aaron Ehasz. May Chan and Katie Mattila. Script by Katie Mattila with Alison Wilgus. Art by Amy Kim Ganter. Color by Wes Dzioba.
Azula refuses to take no for answer when Zuko chooses to stay in Ba Sing Se, rather than return to the Fire Nation as a hero along side her.
Thus a plan is set in motion that involves false pretenses, the Dai Li, and reigniting an old flame.
http://pokefananime.free.fr/avatar/journal/nickmag2_amy.jpg
"It’s Only Natural"
Story by Josh Hamilton and Johane Matte.
Art by Johane Matte. Colors by Wes Dzioba.
Sokka helps the Earth King prepare his royal bear Bosco for life in the wild. Hilarity ensues and lessons are learned…but by whom?
http://pokefananime.free.fr/avatar/journal/nickmag2_johane.jpg
Momo in Fruitstand Freestyle
Story and Art by Brian Ralph. A silent story about everyone’s favorite wicked little critter doing what he does best…getting into trouble!
http://pokefananime.free.fr/avatar/journal/nickmag2_momo.jpg
"Gym Time"
Story by Alison Wilgus. Art by Ethan Spaulding. Colors by Wes Dzioba.
In the spirit of "School Time Shipping" the Avatar gang goes super-deformed for dodge ball antics. Oh, the mayhem!

Sorry about that, I tend to assume that people are like me and stay away from threads like these until they've seen the episode or whatnot. I'll try to catch myself in the future.
On the topic of missing/catching the episode later, does anyone know if Nick has a hard and fast re-airing schedule for Avatar? I haven't watched an episode live since I've been in college, and I'd like to watch the crisp animation on my TV at some point.
Also, I'd be ok with just a comic summation, I'm not looking for the entire comic.
Anyways, I watched the episode again...
First off, and I can't stress this enough, Azula needs to stay the fuck away from my those MY turtle-ducks. If I find one cute misplaced feather or a singe upon their delightful wittle shells I'm liable to choke a bitch.
On second viewing, I think the reason I didn't like the scene with Katara and her dad was how overly anvil-dropping it was in an otherwise subtle show. I guess Hakoda turns everyone around him into exposition-benders or something.
I finally recalled that those two crones who did the cool announcement/audience fill-in were the same ones who taught Azula to shoot lightning. I kinda wanna see Iroh and Bumi team up against the hags for a two v. two Centarian battle royale .
The whole Mai and Zuko thing felt a bit jarring on first walk through, but with the little we've seen of how they are together and a basic understanding of their personalities, Mai is probably the best hookup Zuko is ever going to get. She just seems to care so little about other people's problems she's got to eventually tone down Zuko's excess angst.
Mai: Hey Zuko, I got you a donut.
Zuko: A donut, so much like me, a never-ending circle of pain and humiliation, my center ripped out by Azula and stuffed down the gullet of my spiteful father.
Mai: Eat the goddamn donut, it's glazed.
*Making out ensues*

now this will sound like the most nit-picking thing ever but, my gripe was the dad. Not him, or his personality, but the way he looked. Why did he have light skin and dark eyes when he is from the water tribe? Even arguing its a rare exception, then why aren't his children like that? the family thing was just an afterthought. What about Bato (or whatever his name was), he left with their father and looked like any other water tribesman. Though looking at the picture I suppose my memory might have exagerated it. But then that raises the question of how they could so easily pass as fire nation. I doubt they would arrest them on sight, but atleast be a tad suspicious.

First off, by the very fact that you're able to post means you have successfully lived through the utterly massive conniption fits that Iroh and Zuko walking around the Earth Kingdom in broad daylight caused in your body. Congrats on that.
I don't want to burst anyone's bubbles, but the world of Avatar isn't too heterogeneous. With the right clothes and changes to hairstyle, any character is fully capable of putting up a successful disguise.

I love how they took the "rebel frees kids from the oppression of uptight grownups with the power of rock 'n' roll" movie that got made like five thousand times in the 50s, condensed it into half an hour and transposed it directly onto the world of Avatar, losing nothing whatsoever in translation.

Wang Fire might be great, but Katara overcorrecting her fake name into Sapphire Fire was probably the best part of the meeting. Also, on the fake belly thing, the kids probably thought it was more difficult to cover her face, like Sokka's fake and awesome beard, so they just drew attention away from it.
I like that this episode was more comedy focused, except for the Zuko darkness. The 'enemy birds' line had me grinning like a motherfucker, as did the Ozai by way of noodle drawing, although the latter was mostly helped by how much Aang was impressed with himself. Also great: "So you're one of those popular kids I've heard so much about!"
Hippopotacows are almost too good to contemplate eating.
I like how the 'fight' with the popular kid allowed us to see how Aang looks compared to normal people. My favorite fight scene in the series is still the one that took place between Zuko and Aang at the nunnery (Bato of the Water Tribe, with the first hired assassin), with both of them trying to get a foothold on the other, but until now I didn't realize that Zuko was keeping up with Aang's excess agility.
I know that there are a lot of theories flying around about how Ty Lee will buck off Azula's domination, but I'm pretty sure she doesn't have the necessary stones to put up more than a facade. Mai however is about three vag-blocks away from fucking Azula's shit up.
So 100 years ago the Fire Nation was what you'd typically expect, a bunch of passion-driven people who knew how to have fun. A century and three cult-of-personality kings later and we're left with this.

There was something I got to thinking about before they wanted the avatar alive since killing him would mean they have to search all over again. Two things about that. One being that everyone was just find with the avatar being dead. Which I can understand from the "atleast he is out of our way" stand point. Maybe they feel with the comet and all it wouldn't be that big of a deal but we know they knew about the comet atleast back when Zhoa captured him. It just seems like a rather radical change to me that no one seems to even notice.
Lumenskir
09-29-2007, 03:28 PM
I've always seen the first two seasons worth of "Capture, Don't Kill" approach as a way to keep a rallying point out of the Water Tribe's hands. Ba Sing Se was already a bitch to deal with as a static target, if the Avatar was born inside the walls of their other enemy it might incite a more dynamic military presence from another front.
However, once Azula effectively became leader of her Nation's most pressing enemy, the Avatar at full capacity was more of a nuisance than a Water Tribe baby.
Aang was in the Avatar state when Azula kicked his ass. If you are killed in the Avatar state, the cycle is broken, and the Avatar is no more. Therefore, it's all cool that he's dead.
That, of course, is assuming Azula knew that. If she didn't... yeah, like Lumen said, a Water Tribe infant isn't much of a threat.
Aerozord

Azula didn't know that, heck Aang only recently found that out. It seems a safe bet that no avatar would let information like that get out.

Well you have to remember, had the Avatar been successfully killed while he was in the Avatar state, he'd have been dead for all time. Zuko, doesn't care if the Avatar is reborn again, just as long as he is dead in the short term.
That way even if he is reborn, he has an excuse. Also, if there were to be another Avatar succession, it's highly unlikely there would be any way for him to learn Air bending.

Preferably they'd want to capture him.
However he's escaped numerous times from capture, and overall killing him or losing lots of manpower in order to capture him? Killing would be the choice.
Basically it's like..
If someone has a gun and they're wanted by the police and there's a manhunt, while they WANT to capture the person they will use lethal force if necessary.

Yeah, it's possible that unlike in the Buffy universe wherein near death instances of temporary death equate to death, in the Avatar universe simply being in a state of death temporarily does not equate to death if you are subsequently revived.
Also, I believe they said that he had not fully achieved the Avatar state upon death, thus the death would not disrupt the cycle. This, however, could lead to a possibility that another Avatar was created. Waterbender, I think, is the next in the cycle.

Do you wake up and find yourself able to bend all four elements? Or is it a born thing?
I ask because Aang obviously wasn't always known to be the Avatar.

Born.
The death of one Avatar starts the birth of another. The next one in the cycle, which I believe goes Water -> Earth -> Fire -> Air

Aang didn't die, he was just seriously injured. Besides the fact he fell down, which can be caused by many things, there was nothing to suggest he in any way shape or form died. Death is not something you "come back from". Its a line that once you cross your gone.

Hey guys Aang is shaving again!!

And here I was digging the hair...
I've been wondering who's going to teach Aang firebending, and as time passes it seems more obvious to me that it has to be Iroh. What ever happened to Jeong Jeong from The Deserter?

About Aangs 'death' (spoilers)
He was in the middle of trying to achieve mastery of the avatar state when he was killed.
In the "Escape from the Spirit World" animated comic (that's been called "dogma" by the creators), the avatar cycle IS in danger. However, he makes a connection with his past lives and the cycle is fine. HOWEVER, his ability to enter the Avatar stage has been "damaged".
Now, did he actually die. Well, according to Aang... Yes. "I didn't just get injured. I was gone. You brought me back." His spirit had left his body. To me, this means death. In any case, that's what happened. What it means, I leave to you.
Also, any doubts I had about season 3 were banished. Oddly enough, I like Aang more in this season than I ever have before. He's showing more signs of growing up, while at the same time, staying true to himself.
Headband spoilers
The dancing scene at the end with Aang and Katara was pretty awesome. I have to give props to Aang when he told Katara, "Don't worry about them. It's just us." I guess he finally learned how to be smooth. (A far cry from, "Yeah, I definitely wouldn't want to kiss you.")
Also, I really enjoyed the parent conference. "Fire. Waaannngg Fire."
Can't wait to check out the new adversary.

He's using the hangglider, and there are already christian/jesus christ overtures in the storyline, especially in the season 2 finale.

I'm glad Katara's getting some episodes, and that was a pretty cool one (if a little dull).
It'll be great to see Sokka's episode, if only because it's more Sokka!

How many Sokka episodes have there been?
I think you can count that on one hand.
So yes, a Sokka episode is going to rock.

This episode featured one of my favorite things. A crazy old guy.

how was the finale christ like? Just because someone gets seriously injured and comes back doesn't mean there are religious overtones. Especially when he was injured by pwnage and not by sacrifice.
PS, might consider stickying this untill the new season is over. I dont see this thing losing popularity for atleast two more months

Did you forget the passage in the Bible that describes Jesus H. and Mary Magdelene's awesome Kung Fu battle with the terramancing Roman Soldiers? Even ends the same way, the Devil takes the form of a 15 year old asian girl and shoots lightning into the small of Jesus's back.

It's considered by many fans that the pieta sculpture was the basis for that scene, and that it's supposed to in some way show how Aang is akin to Jesus, as being the "savior". His resurrection is only a subsequent add on to the Jesus overtone.

so what, everytime a person is raised he becomes a holy analog? If thats the case every character in DBZ must have acheived sainthood ten times over.

What I think is a more important issue from the cover is where the hell did Aang get another glider and why? He burned his during The Awakening, after all, in order to hide his identity as the Avatar.

No, everytime someone is a spiritual person, who is resurrected, who is supposed to be a savior, who is held in a way akin to a well known artist's rendition of Jesus Christ and Mary...
Well, I hope you see the difference between DBZ and Avatar in this instance..

well ya, or you can look at the obvious signs of spirits, reincarnation cycle, buddist rituals, chakra network, the word avatar and see this show has alot more referances to far east religions then near west ones. I'm just saying you see Aang revive from a mortal wound and yell HE'S JESUS. But after seeing he is the reincarnated embodiment of the elemental spirits, ie an Avatar, you dont really even take notice. Aang has alot more in common with Hinduism and Buddism then christianity.

Avatar has representations of nearly everything, ranging from the various religions to the various political and social ideals.
That's probably what makes it so interesting..it has much more depth to it than you would anticipate from a "Made for kids" show.

Avatar, the original word, is from hinduism, its the incarnation of a higher being into an earthly form. In the case of this show, it would be someone with a deep connection to all four elements and as a result the spirit world (or vice versa). Hmm I wonder if the first avatar was just an accended/enlightened bender. Would be great if they ever give an origin story of it.

The Avatar is the spirit of the Earth, so it was probably always around. Just unable to bend due to a lack of comprehension, until people began to develop the bending arts?
I dunno >.>

Wait, I have the answer (http://www.avatarspiritmedia.net/interviews.php?id=19)!!
RM: Did the Avatar pre-date other bending, or did bending predate the Avatar?
BK: We've definitely talked about that. But, in the event we ever did something with that, we'd rather not go into that. Mike and I for years have talked about that...over many a ping-pong game. We both find it really interesting, so we really don't want to just throw away something so integral to a story we might be telling.
Okay, no, not really, but I like to mess up with you.
