I'm a little surprised we don't have a thread on this already. I figure this is a good month to get one started since there is so much action. From the end of August to the end of September there will have been 3 UFC PPV events, the UFC reality show, and an Ultimate Fight Night. Not to mention all of the smaller events, like K1 and EliteXC, around the world. I'll start by posting one of the unofficial rankings. This one is from Sherdog, which is one of many informative MMA websites for those of you that don't know much about the sport (411mania.com has a really good MMA section as well). I mostly agree with their placement of fighters.

One of my favorite fighters is the UFC heavyweight champ Randy Couture. He's a five time champion on top of being 44 years old and one classy son of a gun. Also, he's a fellow Washingtonian which is bonus for me. His last performances against former champ Tim Sylvia and challenger Gabriel Gonzaga were impressive displays of athleticism and intelligence that made for fascinating contests.

Beyond the fights there is a lot of stuff going on right now, with various acquisitions and new companies entering the fray. I'd like to hear what you guys have to say about any and all of this.

Not really a fan of UFC... to be trully hones twith you... i really dont like it... it's somewhat of a stupid thin for me.... it takes no Tech at all... and having people beat the crap out of each other and call that an "sport"... it strikes me as silly.. that's all...

Trully i prefer wrestling any day... may be "fake"... but those guys have skills to show off, bot just "BEAT'U'DOWN!"

honestly, from what I've seen it is'nt that good. It's all grappling and Brazilian Jui-Jitsu. If I wanted to see people hump, well, there's porn. it's hilarious because MMA supporters wil act like grappling is the ultimate style, andthat "ground'n'pound" is unbeatable. I think this funny since a lot fot he MMA fights I've seen ended when one guy finally broke the lock, got up and punched/stomped the other guy in the head. I like World Combat League. it's more fun to watch, requires more thought and skill IMO, and has less down time in fights, as that's against the rules.

You guys must not have seen very much. MMA is a highly technical sport that requires years of discipline and training in multiple schools of combat to compete at the highest levels. It isn't "human cockfighting" like John McCain likes to call it. There are rules and governmental regulation just like any other contact sport. One technique doesn't dominate the rest, and as such there are fighters specializing in just about any style one could care to watch.

I can't seriously be the only person on this forum that follows MMA avidly, can I?
