Does anyone know if the Ipod nano has been successfully and reliably cracked so iTunes doesn't have to be used to transfer music? I'm looking into a new mp3 player but I hate iTunes.

Yes, it was cracked ages ago by windows XP. :/ Just plug-unplug it a few times while watching your 'My Computer' Folder, it'll show up on the third attempt when the proper drivers don't load.

But will the player recognize the files that are dropped across?

as long as they are .mp3 files, yes.

Demetrius, if I recall, Winamp is capable of transferring music to an iPod. In addition, installing iPod Linux would likely free you from this barrier as well, albeit at the cost of running through Linux and not the iPod's native OS.

I never had a problem adding music through drag-drop. iTunes be damned.

I don't know what all the iTunes hate is all about. I don't mind the program personally.
Albeit, if it went a bit faster that would be nice...

It's probably the forced use of it, at least in part.
Many non-Apple music players allow you to choose what program you'd like to use -- if any, since most can function as drag-and-drop external drives.

I have issues with anything that is forced into the delicate balance of my system.
