I just got a new computer with Vista and so forth, and I'm all hooked up to the internet now so I downloaded RO. But when I try to unpack it with winrar I get this:

So I thought "Maybe Vista hates WinRAR, lets try 7-zip" annd I got this
http://pics.livejournal.com/teh_ty/pic/00012qgc

I have downloaded the core RO file twice with the same results both times.
Oh, and only one file makes it into my RO folder "pdata.grf" with a size of 123,342kbs

vista = crap. Don't use it.

yeah winrar hasn't been updated to work with vista yet. Not sure about 7zip but I would assume the same thing.

what should I use for all my file extracting need then?

It looks like the file got corrupted somehow, maybe in download, maybe by some other means. No extractor can fix that, and it has nothing to do with your OS.

The easy solution would be to redownload.

I suggest power archiver, though I don't have vista and go is probably right about the file being corrupted.

I run Vista, and so does another person I know and we both extracted the files fine with Winrar (Or at least I did) so yeah, don't blame Vista for every shit-up a computer with it does. :B

Same as Xon. I've had it happen to me a few times on both Vista and XP (though my RaiRO extraction went smoothly), with WinRAR or 7zip, anything to extract really. It's probably just a corrupted file.

ok, thanks folks. I'll just download it again and see what happens

Try downloading from a different source this time: HTTP if you used Torrents, torrents if you used HTTP, etc.

Not much choice with the RaiRO client, although it's certainly sound advice anywhere else. :p

Really? Well, that's a shame. You may want to try with a different connection, then; download with a friend's computer, and then transfer it over with a flash drive.

it's too big for most standard flash drives (it's about 1.3 gigs total i think... butg I havent checked in a while).

also, winrar (and a number of other programs) didn't work when I had vista installed for all of 2 hours. I installed WinXp right away after that because I don't like not having programs run because of the OS (though for mac I'll just get a seperate mac box)

I've since downloaded the torrent twice more with the same results :(
I suppose that I'll ask in the direct download thread as that might work for me

Edit: I've tested Winrar and 7-zip and both work fine for everything except for this RO, so the file that I downloaded must be messed up

I love how fantastically wrong your post is, both in regards to blaming the OS for a file issue and for not taking into account the fact that WinRAR's been Vista-compatible since May* (before then if you count the Compatibility Mode that XP and Vista have built-in).

I mean, sure, have your bias against Vista or whatever you want, that's cool. But don't let it spew incorrect advice.

* supposed publication date of their press release regarding v3.70.

QFT. Vista isn't the cause of as many problems as people attribute to it.

Also, synk, do you just copy-paste those tags every time you post? 'cause seriously, that's a whack of code.

If you mean the color and font tags I use in each of my posts, no, I do not copy-paste them. I just type up the post and then make use of ctrl-a and select what I want (in some cases, I have to do this more than once to avoid applying my styling to quotes and the like).
