Seeing as I've only seen the English dubs on Adult Swim, i can't say I have a grasp on what powers exist. Can I make one up?

Ok, let me think... I'm not going to make up some super awesome powers or something. If I was a soul reaper, I'd probably be one of the lower ranked ones who just barely is able to ask its name. it would probably be something Japanese, as is the trend in the show. I like to think I'd be on Squad 11 (mostly because Kenpachi is awesome), so it would reflect the blunt force approach those guys seem to have.

So I take out my sword, call out its crazy Japanese name, and it becomes a hammer. A big, two-handed one. And its on fire. And that's it.

Simple, moderately destructive, lights things on fire. I already like it more than half of the crazy-ass things on that show.

The power of plot is the ultimate power, so I'd have my zanpakuto power make my glasses shiny (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main.ScaryShinyGlasses), and for a bankai I'd make my sword sing an ominous latin chorus/some sweeping operatic theme/super creepy low techno while dramatic wind swept my shinigami uniform. That way I'd ensure only the protagonist could kill me and I'd survive at least til the end of the arc, if not the whole series.

I'd like to have one whose primary release was a set of ten rings, one on each finger, each loaded with some spirit force and able to shapeshift into small weapons. Ability would be to discharge each ring in a superpowered bolt, apart from the minor shapeshifting.

Full release would be a full body armour, like the one Samus has, only more pointy edges. The ability would be to absorb damage taken and convert it into destruction of some sort.

Actually he mixed the Shikai of Captain Douche as his Shikai with the Shikai of Lieutenant Bimbo (Matsumoto) as his Bankai. The only thing he changed was size and that's like only half of what goes into making a Bankai.

Shikai: Becomes a set of four swords and incases its wielder in armor. If either is damaged it can regenerate. However the armor supresses his spiritual pressure so he gains no boost when its released. Also possesses the power of zanpakto dominance, which allows him to use the powers of another zanpakto if he can get his hands on it, this also causes him to lose one of his four blades. It is a continual release zanpakto

Bankai: The armor incasing him shatters. Although he no longer has the armor his power is no longer restrained. He also gains the power of weapon synthasis. Rather then simply replacing his zanpakto he can merge his with others to combine powers having full access to both their shikai and bankai.

Maakaraou (crimson lightning king). Release command: Maakaraou kirizaiteyarou! (Maakaraou, let's cut them to shreds).

Shikai: Crimson colored blade, sort of a cross between yumichika and kurotsuchi (creepy taichou as my friends and I call him). Basically three blades coming out in haphazard directions to look like a lightning bolt. If you are cut, the cuts will spread in the same pattern. A direct hit, can easily have you bleeding from most of your body.

Bankai: Reverts to a standard zankpakutou only slightly longer, like hitsugaya (shorty taichou). Still crimson colored. If you are cut, any cut you have ever had will be reopened. I figure Ichigo, Renji, and Kenpachi would all just turn into a fine red mist if they got hit by it. Hanatarou probably wouldn't fair too badly.

I dont know, Rukia and Tatsuki are pretty flat. Yoruichi and the other female squad members are pretty average to me. I mean Matsumoto, Orihime, and two or three others are, but most aren't.

Rukia and Tatsuki are the only two female characters over 14 that both show up regularly and stick around for more than a scene. All the others are C cup plus in a country where finding a natural B cup is supposed to be rare. Hell a natural C cup is pretty rare anywhere. Also the problem gets worse later and if you read the Manga and have gotten to chapter 290 you know what I mean. Ichigo seems to be a magnet for shall we say top heavy females.

well there are only 13 captains, cant expect every society in history to be represented. Though wouldn't suprise me if Kenpachi was from some European warrior culture

Also, you age in the soul society. Though the scale is never revealed you do age and die. Now I'm not sure about Vikings, though I think that was over a thousand years ago. So I think they would be rather old by now. The 13 squads were only founded like 1000 years ago or something.

The way I see it, if you beleive death is eating pork and drinking mead every day for eternity, the last thing on hour mind would be government.
Also, if there were other cultures of the dead, the ghost vikings would probably spectrally rape and pillage them.
So, when the viking obstruction went away, the diligent ghosts of the japanese got things organized.

Second, as far as a flawed zanpakutou, I can't really think of any. Some people are embarassed by their zanpakutou, others don't particularly like them, and some are not suited for combat but rather healing. One thing that could be considered a flaw: to bring out one's bankai, they must communicate with their zanpakutou's spirit. Said spirits tend to share the personality flaws of the zanpakutou's owner. Such as Yumichika's being vain and arrogant, and Matsumoto's (Boobies fuku-taichou just to piss of fifth) being lazy and self-indulgent.

for the record. when you die in soul society your dead dead, and your body becomes spiritual particles. Atleast according to 13th squads assistant captain.

As for Yumichika's zanpakto, it was the result of one of my favorite scenes. With him smashing it against a stone yelling "WHY WONT YOU BREAK" or something like that.
