Interview (http://www.avatarspiritmedia.net/interviews.php?id=18)
RM (interviewer): I'm not supposed to talk about Season Three but do you have any thoughts as to what the future of Avatar might be other than the live action movie that they're talking about, which will be a little off on its own?
MDD (Michael Dante DiMartino): Well, we'll be pretty involved with that, so that'll keep us very busy the next few years.
RM: So any future for the cartoon?
MDD: Well, we don't know yet. We've got some ideas.
BK(Bryan Konietzko): We've always got tricks up our sleeves.
RM: Well I know shows often continue on into OAVs and movie events...that sorta thing.
MDD: We love the avatar universe so we want to keep telling stories in it if we have the outlet for it. We're just not interested in watering this storyline down, or filling it...keeping it dragging on. We try to make it as potent as we can. That's our big priority. Still, we'll do some other things. (laughter) We're not retiring.
RM: Can you talk at all about what you're thinking of in the future?
BOTH: (Laughter) Hush hush...really secret...
So, it's still up in the air. But the original idea was to take place in a three season (book) arc.

Finishing in the third season as always planned you say? That sounds extremely good, it's always good when a series keeps a succinct and determined pace and endpoint, rather than dragging it out or worse killing it early.
As far as OVAs go, I would love to see an Iroh from childhood to the aftermath of the siege of Ba Sing Se where he lost his son and Ozai subsequently took power. Assuming such isn't covered during season 3, which considering how the last season ended isn't unlikely.

I hope I understand this correctly. That they are saying even if the avatar story arc ends, which it will when the time calls for it, then they will still make things set in that world.
Who knows, maybe we will even get a more violent avatar.

I'm going to go convince them to hand Avatar over to the writing staff of Naruto and turn Reboot into a Jack Thompson-produced morality tale on how video games inevitably turn children into cold-blooded murderers, just to see if I can make you actually cry tears of blood.

I still don't get the hype.
I really hope that Aang's story ends after this season, but the Avatar world is a pretty rich environment for side stories: Iroh's past, past Avatars, origins of bending, so on and such. I wouldn't mind more stuff from these guys, just stuff that doesn't mess with the compact wonderfulness we've gotten so far.

I have doubts in even the ability of Avatar's writers - mighty Demi-gods of raw creative force that they may be - to make an entire season out of epilogue.

Well I just think there is some clean up needed. I would honestly be very disappointed if he defeats the fire lord and everyone just gives up suddenly.
It's pretty awesome that they're planning on doing more--A live action movie? Crossing my fingers for THAT!--And the one thing I really want to know about Iroh is when Aang was riding the dragon in the spirit world, why the hell was Iroh able to see him? I think that's a fairly overlooked but very intriguing point.
In other news, I still need to see a hefty chunk of season 2. It's not being shown on Nick, like, at all.
Still excited for this season though!

Well I just think there is some clean up needed. I would honestly be very disappointed if he defeats the fire lord and everyone just gives up suddenly.
At most, that's one episode, and could even easily be summed up by a three minute section at the end of episode 60 that skips forward a few years to show how everyone's doing. I'd be fine with a 21 episode season 3, but to watch 20 episodes of "Hey, everyone, let's all get along now 'k? kthnxbye!" would probably be part of that 'diluting' thing the creators want to avoid.

The movie is being made by M. Night Shyamalan, who has stated that he took the job because his kids were such big fans. What else were his kids fans of? The Lady in the Water. I'd be afraid.
They have made some mention of it bluntly (I believe Admiral Zhou even talked directly to Iroh about the spiritual journey he went on after his son died), and alluded to it subtly (how he knows so many things about the other Nations, even the Air Nomads who would probably have been extinct by the time he was born).

Toph is the greatest earthbender to ever live, simply due to being blind.
Her blindness has allowed her access to skills that other Earthbenders can't even comprehend. Skills that I hope she has practiced over the month or so that Season 2-3 transists through.

I'm really just hoping that when the Gaang heads back to rescue Bumi, Toph does some Metalbending in front of Bumi, which Bumi then repeats at like triple strength. Because while Toph is awesome, Bumi is about ten times older and cooler.
Although, Toph saying "I see the library!" is my second favorite funny bit from the show. The first, of course, being the end of the Air Temple episode where everybody's cheering from repelling the Fire Nation, and Sokka comes crashing down screaming "We're FALLING!!"

I personally think that Azula is somehow going to get Ozai off of the throne, either by a coup, or by just outright killing her father.

She isn't just good because she's blind. She's good because she has raw talent and was willing to hone it. I have no doubt she would be just as good with sight.
However, I think Bumi with all his experience is the better of the two. Just because he hasn't metalbended yet doesn't' mean he can't. I mean, didn't everyone else get the impression that Bumi could have escaped whenever he wanted?

Division. Mai and Ty Lee (and maybe Zuko?) vs Azula. Maybe not an actual fight though.

It's possible Bumi can metalbend. He hasn't yet though.
You are the second (female) Avatar fan who has voiced that opinion about Azula. Why? It totally goes against her character.
"You'll never catch up."
"And there is no more Omashu, I'm renaming it in honor of my father: the city of New Ozai."
"Wouldn't Father make a much better Firelord?"
etc
She's daddy's little firebending prodigy. For now. I don't think she would try this until she felt her father wasn't strong enough to hold the throne. She respects power, not age.
I'm just guessing, but the reason you think that is because of what Ozai may or may not have done to Azulon.
I disagree. I think that Zuko's mother killed Azulon.
In any case, I'm so glad that we will be getting at least the first five episodes close together. With the Fire: Volume 1 coming out on Oct. 30, and the series premiering on Sep. 21, that's only 6 weeks between. 5 episodes in 6 weeks.

No, actually, I thought so because I think Azula is just the type to use and throw away anyone and anything in order to achieve her own goals. She may be daddy's little firebending prodigy now, but maybe when she's decided "hey, I've done more for this war than father has, it's time for him to step down." I have no trouble seeing her doing something to get her father off of the throne.

I doubt Azula would do anything to Ozai. Whether she tries or not doesn't matter, but I seriously doubt Ozai would just be thrown out of the story like that. He's the final boss.
And I've also hoped that Bumi is the better Earthbender. Sure, Toph is blind and awesome, but Bumi is the incredibly experienced, inexplicably powerful crazy old guy. And he could escape at any time, the point was that he didn't want to because he's waiting for the right moment.
Edit - Also, my favorite line(s).
Katara: The king is having a party at the palace tonight for his pet bear!
Aang: You mean Platypus-bear?

True. And it's probably a very rare ability. But that doesn't mean Toph is the only one who can do it. Again, it's a question of her skill and training vs her blindness. Did she learn because she was blind? I don't think so. But we'll see.

I totally see and respect what that. It's certainly a valid one. But I don't think it's something we'll see as it would occur after some years have passed. At the very least, it wouldn't make sense to cause that major a disruption right before the comet comes back. During the comet or after though, I wouldn't be surprised to try something though.

Not only would Azula usurp and/or kill her dad the instant she thought she could actually get away with it, he'd probably be like, "Atta girl! That's Daddy's little sociopath, way to do me proud!"
As noted whether or not there's actually room for this to occur in the space of the remaining series is a whole other question.
I'm kind of pulling for Zuko to finally beat his sister / ultimately succeed his father as Fire Lord just cause it seems like that would resolve a lot of little bits of plot they've left dangling out there. But who knows whether that's actually where things are going.

Well, she sees through bending and therefore as a blind earth bender was the only one who could see the earthlike properties in the metal, and thus bend the earth which bent the metal. Until other earthbenders learn to see with their bending, I doubt they could, but it's probably very possible.

Earthbenders can't bend metal because they don't realize, they don't comprehend that there is earth in the metal. They simply feel that it's all removed during the metal creation.
Toph was able to realize that metal contains earth, and upon understanding how it was built, how it was placed within, she could "bend" it.
I still hope she's refined this talent.
My favorite line? Any from when Sokka had cactus juice.

I will voice my Bumi vs Toph opinion as simply this. Just because Toph can bend metal doesn't automatically make her better. Bumi said he was the most powerful earthbender, but Toph was also completely unknown at the time.
Toph can bend metal, yea. But Bumi can kill you by twitching his face.
Now as for Azula, to be honest I got the feeling she would rather rule the Earth Kingdom capital then bother taking over the fire nation. Even if she did take over she would probably just sit Zuko on the throne there and take her's in Ba Sing Sei. Kind of like what happened to Rome.
As for best line, although I loved when Toph said "I SEE IT", and the bear thing. I would have to cast my vote for
"Look your cute and all, but unfortunately your made of meat"

Ah yes, and favorite lines/parts:
I really love the part where Toph is just like "Yeah, let's break some rules!" and destroyed half of the house. There just something so randomly awesome about it.
And the moment Toph did the whole "does someone have a razor, because I have some HAIIRY pits" after Katara was all relieved that there was finally a girl in the group was the moment that I fell in love with her.
And the part where the kids in Ba Sing Sei are playing soccer and hit the ball through a window, and Uncle is all like "Often it is wise to apologise for your wrongs and seek to restore honor" and that guy pops up and is like "When I'm done with you, this window won't be the only thing that's broken." and uncle goes, "but not this time, run! run!"
Oh yes, and about 90% of anything Sokka says. He makes me laugh.

Bumi is the most powerful Earthbender.
Toph is the most talented.
I dunno about most talented...I'd definitely give her most blind though. A lot of her skill comes from the fact that she's so reliant on the Earth to do, ya know, anything, hence why she's developed so much faster.
When the two guys who captured her were babbling about "best earthbender", I think the whole focus of that scene was supposed to be the monk who was discussing how everyone was so oblivious to the fact that metal was just refined earth. Since Toph could 'see' through the mental block, she was able to bend metal. I'm sure that if she explained her process it wouldn't be an unthinkable act for any other earthbender of appropriate skill. Bumi, being the most powerful earthbender and someone known for unorthodox thinking, would easily duplicate the action.
At least, that's my fan-reasoning for how Bumi could do it.
Although, when Toph broke everyone out of prison, I couldn't help remembering the first episode of Futurama where Bender de-bends the prison bars and then tries to further show off his newfound talent. I'd like to see Toph walking around, trying to find the smallest reason to metalbend.
TWG, do you know if there any plans for plushies of the animal hybrids from the show? Because I will gladly take any sneers or barbs if it means I can put my stuffed Weimaraner next to a plushie turtle-duck in my dorm room.
ArlanKels

The prison break shows something, by the way.
That Toph doesn't need to concentrate significantly on the metal to bend it, as she had to in the first metalbending.
What I mean is, during her first usage of it, she did a lot of intense "Sonar pings" on the metal, and then bent it.
In her second viewed usage of it she just walked up and bended the metal.
So I think that as one gets more accustomed to metalbending they can more readily bend it, to the point that she'll probably be able to do crap like cover herself with metal(Like the rock armor), and other such oddities.

I somewhat doubt that because, only type of metal bending we have seen is when Toph physically contacts the metal. And then her "bending" appears more as just highly increased strength simular to how an earthbender can punch and shatter a large stone.
ArlanKels
07-31-2007, 11:32 PM
She contracts the metal by forcing the earth in it to move. So if she refined her ability to control the earth in the metal she could have greater control over said metal.

Actually. I've been thinking about it (and watching some more Avatar, especially the part where she first bends metal)
In my personal opinion, I don't think any other (sighted) earthbender will be able to easily bend metal. It's not just KNOWING that there is earth in the metal, I am sure that many many earthbenders know that there is earth in it, it's actually finding the earth TO bend in the metal. The only way Toph was able to find the earth was through her method of "seeing". I think the only way for an earthbender to learn how to do it is to learn how to "see" through the metal like Toph did. (which, I think, would be really hard to get the same sensitivity to seeing through earth as Toph does, unless you've been relying on that every day of your life on a day-to-day basis)
In a similar, non-avatar example, My nephew (who is blind) can tell people apart by smell(even in a crowded room). I may have the knowlege that each and every person has a specific scent, and know that it is possible to tell someone apart by scent. But I am not going to be able to tell people apart by scent until I think like my nephew, and learn to "see" through my other senses (and, like the avatar example, will never bee as sensitive as my nephew, who has to rely on that every day of his life)
So yeah, I've been thinking about this waay to much.

Earthbenders can bend earth, which includes most things you could drag up from the ground: sand, rock, dirt, hardened minerals, the like (excluding flora of course).
Metal is made by taking the earth, then burning it until it is free of impurities. When the impurities are burned away, an earthbender finds little pure earth left to actually bend. Of course, Toph can see the minute bits of earth still left, and can then bend those bits.
Try and keep up fifth, it's a kids show.

So you take earth, remove the impurities, which leaves you with... no pure earth? See this is what I'm saying, that doesn't work at all.

Oh shits I just hope Wandering God doesn't catch you saying that.

It might not make a great deal of sense if you try and scrutinize it, but as a broad theory it holds up ok. Earthbenders (for the most part) are the good guys, and can bend earth. Firebenders (for the most part) are the bad guys, and when they get their eeevil hands on earth, they turn it into metal, which the good guys can no longer control. In a show where people are shooting fire from their hands that is in turn derived from their breath, I'll accept the impurity position. EDIT: ALSO, Pyrometallurgy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyrometallurgy) would make an awesome name for a really shitty Christian thrash-metal band.
And I'm sorry, Avatar is family entertainment.
Following up on my turtle-duck fascination, what is everyone's favorite animal concoction on the show?
There is no way that Avatar is a kid's show. Yes, it's on Nick. But really, if you have to think this hard about how things are going, it just doesn't seem to belong to the genre of 'kids.' Seriously, man, Lake Logai? Are 8-year-olds gonna really grasp the scale of brainwashing? That was some creepy action.
Also, as far as the animal-fusions... god, I love those creatures. It's really difficult for me to peg down my favorite, but it might be the turtle-seal.

You know I would be fine with "metal isn't earth" if it wasn't for the fact we saw Aang using earthbending on crystals. How are the crystals more earth then metal?

By the way, she can bend metal by doing this:
Toph is able to detect the particles of UNREFINED earth within the metal, which therein allows her to manipulate and control the metal by forcing the earth to move, dragging the metal along with it(Kind of like if someone grabbed your bones and yanked them in a direction, your arm would follow your arm bones..etc).
subsequently it is not "pure earth" But unrefined, rough earth that they control. By refining it and removing the impurities they're therein removing that which allows the Earthbenders to control it readily.
Most earthbenders believe that metal has no earth at all. They're taught this, you can't bend metal. This basically generates a mental block causing almost all Earthbenders to be unable to bend metal.
Toph was able to see past that, while she originally perhaps thought she could not bend metal she was forcefully made aware that there was earth in the metal containing her. That therein allowed her to comprehend that she COULD bend the metal.

ok, but why can you bend crystal? Thats more pure mineral then metal is.

So exciting is this news of Avatar's third season that it has roused me from a months-long coma of NPF inactivity! Truly, it is a formidable force.
As for bending crystal, it's unprocessed rock, just like all the other earth we've seen bent in the show. My understanding of metalbending is just that any earth that's gone through a refining process can no longer be manipulated by earthbenders who are unable to find the hidden fragments that slipped through the refinery (or whatever it is that Firebenders use to make metal). As for Toph's metalbending, it really isn't even metalbending at all. The metal just happens to be surrounding the earth that she's manipulating.
Honestly, I'd actually be pretty pissed if Toph would be able to start bending metal as well as, say, Katara can bend water. That would be completely broken, and Avatar wouldn't be any fun to watch anymore.

ok but crystal is naturally processed, pure minerals. Just like how metal is pure... well metal. However there is one way I can understand it. If I'm not mistake "earth" is primarily quartz. Well it was some mineral. And said minerals do crystalize.

See I'd debate this but I don't really understand how metal is even made.

I think the main idea behind the whole theory is that metal is man-made, and therefore it's lost (for the most part) it's connection to the lifeforce (qi, according to Iroh and Pathik) that binds the world together.

its not made. Its naturally found in the earth. The whole refinement process is just to seperate it from other materials in the stone. Normally through melting

Yeah Zilla pretty much got what I was saying there - metal is basically just one kind of earth separated out from a bunch of other kinds of earth.
Oh well. Like Lumen says, it's just a kids show. (IN YOUR FACE TWG.)
Now watch as I demonstrate my mighty forum-bending abilities by closing this thread.
