View Full Version : Animes That You Don't Like
I like anime - I do. My favorite of the bunch is the Witch Hunter Robin series. I like Digimon, and I love the Pokemon games. (The Pokemon television show has gotten a bit... convoluted - much like how Power Rangers has become.)
I do not, however, like some other anime television shows, such as Naruto. I created this thread to digitize a conversation I had with a few friends that are Naruto fans, and I thought it'd be a good way to start off an anime thread. Feel free to use this thread to discuss animes you don't like, or just some details that get to you - it's not about subbing versus dubbing here, although I really do like subbed shows better.
------------------
The first thing I have to say about Naruto is the hand gestures... for serious. Way back when, most Ninja were not trained in the art of Ninjitsu. They were farmers and peasants, paid by their lords to kill, spy and steal - hence using things like farming sickles for weapons - among other implements used. Ninja also had a few other tricks up their sleeves - they had wooden blocks shaped like animal feet on the bottom of their shoes, which allowed them to leave unnoticed tracks. Often, smoke bombs and fireworks were used to aid an escape or to create a diversion. Bamboo and hollow eggs would be filled with sand or small bits of metal and thrown at someone to block their view or to temporarily blind someone. A ring called a shobo could be worn, that would help to apply more pressure to different points on the body, resulting in sharp pain or temporary paralysis.
Secondly, Naruto's bright, orange jumpsuit. Ninja are known for their distinctive black clothing, but that's only because of prop handlers. Way back when, in Japanese theater, prop handlers would come on set and help change the scene, or fan the leaves of a tree to add realism. Because they "weren't really there," they wore black clothing, and the audience suspended their disbelief and watched the show. Ninja would dress in the same black clothes sported by the prop handlers, and sneak in with them, and perform feats of ninja-ism. Hence, Ninja are stereotypically always seen wearing black. Historically, Nina dress in camouflage - dark colors were used at night, while colors like white were used in the snow. Some ninja may have worn Samurai garb or the clothes of Japanese peasants. Their boots had a camel toe design, similar to many fashions of the time, that helped wall climbing and rope gripping. A bright, orange jumpsuit does not a ninja make.
Thirdly, the birth circumstances. When Naruto was born, he was shunned by his community - being forced to go to Ninja school. There's no such thing as a Ninja school - historically, most Ninja were never specially trained - and if they were, it was the result of training in other methods - like martial arts training, or training under their Lord. Ninja were developed to do jobs that the Samurai Bushido (honor code) forbade Samurai to do - assassination, espionage, guerrilla warfare and covert killings. In the anime, Naruto never really seems to get into anything except some fights with other "Ninja."
Finally, I bring religion into the mix - Ninja were prejudiced against for favoring Buddhism - and I understand why the American and Canadian corporations didn't want to bring religion into the show - but Buddhism was a big part of the Nina culture, and why they were persecuted by the imperial forces. They could of at least put a Buddha statue into the show.

Inuyasha, Kikaider, Dragonball GT and Z after they go to Namek, Sailor Moon when the little pink one shows up (I dunno, maybe it's because I missed a few episodes, didn't know what was going on, and lost interest?)...
And also, animes isn't a word, like mangas and ninjas. The plural is still anime, manga, and ninja. There was once this guy who asked me if I liked "those Chinese amines (aah-min-ays)."

To be honest, I dont think most of your complaints about Naruto are valid simply because you are saying they dont match up with history, its a fantasy anime about a made up world. It would be like saying Fullmetal Alchemist was bad because historically you couldn't do alchemy.
Dont get me wrong, I agree its over rated but for different reasons.
Nine-tailed fox is way too deus ex machina
The characters are just cliche archetypes
Some backstories make no sence, Itachi for example. Why did he kill his clan? He said it was to test his abilitie but he killed people that weren't even fighting back, how is that a challenge? If he wanted a challenge why not attack the hokage or any of the other powerful clans?
Oh and Naruto is not a ninja, lets be clear on this. Ninjas are stealthy assasins, the day Naruto spies or assasinates (fillers dont count) then I will reconsider. Untill then, he is not a ninja.
I dont think its a horrible anime, but it is way too overrated

Half the show doesn't make sense, I haven't seen anyone but a "Ninja" in the show, and all they do is fight out in the open wearing bright clothing. Is that better?

did you read the rest of my post? I'm not arguing that it sucks. I just think expecting historical accuracy from an anime is asking abit much. Besides the ninja techniques are based on the legend of ninjas, not on actual ones.

Quicklist time!!
Inuyasha ( It... just.... argh....... )
80% of the anime at Animax ( Most of it sucks really )
School Rumble (Just go see Hentai for Criss'sake!)
Sailor Moon ( The show actually has only one Episode, they just change some detailes to make it look liek it has a lot...)
DragonBall GT ( GAWD!! )
Dragon Ball Z (they should have stopped with Cell)
Red Fighter 1073

School Rumble (Just go see Hentai for Criss'sake!)
wait what? I thought if anything it's more of a shojo anime especially in the second season, but I usually thought of it as a comedy and pretty good one too. I don't see how it's hentai at all.
Also, with DBZ, the Buu saga was still pretty cool what with the mind control and all, but the whole regenerating enemy thing got really annoying, especially how it was overused with Cell.
I thought some of the ideas of the new fusions and Super Saiyan levels was sick, but otherwise I agree.
I also wholeheartedly agree about Inuyasha. It was like a Hentai/Love anime that tried to make itself seem actioney. I mean seriously, how many times has Kagome been naked? Also, the whole love triangle could've been more elaborated and would've made the show more decent, but it didn't progress at all when it should have.

Well... School rumble i only watched a few of the first episodes... its just a free ass kicking and a lot of "near naked" shots of girls... not like "Suzumi Haruhi" where "sexy" was actually well used into comedy... cant say if it gets better over time because i really didnt watched for that long
Now, on DBZ... i would have to say that the Boo Saga is "Ok" with me... but its like its only 50% good... i dunno, its just way too crazy and over the top... the ending on cell with Goku's death and Gohan "Taking over the mantle" was good enough for me there.

I don't like Inuyasha (this is like the thousandth I've said this; I'm actually bored of my own hate).
I still watch Naruto subbed every so often, but I feel that the Zabuza saga was the best of the entire series making the 4 (I think)seasons after it suck by comparison.
I haven't seen past the intro of this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGMfb60lc14), but I just know I won't like it.

Obviously Naruto has been said before, but I am not a fan simply because I do not have the attention span for it. My roommate was watching it, and I saw she was at the part with the fight with Zabuza at the bridge, and I wanted to see Naruto release the fox demon in the fight, so I was like "Oh, I'll just sit and watch until then" (because I had never seen it in the anime, but read it in the manga), I ended up having to sit there for way too many episodes(I think it took 5 episodes from the beginning of the fight to the point where it happens). By then I was just like "forget this, I cannot watch the same fight for 5+ episodes"
Other than that, I really don't have much of a beef with animes. There are series that I used to be into but got bored of it (like Inuyasha, Sailor Moon, and Pokemon), but just because they took too long. (But if I am doing nothing and I see an episode is on, I might stick around to watch it and/or mock it) Really, any anime longer than two seasons had better be really awesome to get me to pay attention that long(It seems two seasons is my limit, since the only animes I've bothered to stick with all the way through was Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, and Fullmetal Alchemist)

Oh man would you have hated DBZ. I used to be a fan when I was younger, and the long-ass fights that were once cool to watch have since become tedious (and the non-fighting parts idiotic). Anyone else who has seen it will agree that a typical DBZ saga consists of this:
Episodes 1-3: "hey, we just defeated a villian bent on blowing up the planet/galaxy/universe, so let's beat the crap out of stupid criminals, and maybe have children!"
Episodes 4-10: "hey, there's another villian bent on blowing up the planet/galaxy/universe, except now he's more powerful to the ten-thousandth power times twenty-four million! Let's train to become more powerful to the ten-thousandth power times twenty-three million nine hundred ninety-nine thousand nine hundred ninety-nine point nine power!"
Episode 11: futile struggling against previously mentioned villian.
Episode 12: "RRAAAGH... ANGER!"
Episode 13: "I'M CHARGIN MAH LAZERZ!"
Episode 14: "I'M CHARGIN MAH LAZERZ!"
Episode 15: "I'M CHARGIN MAH LAZERZ!"
Episode 16: "I'M CHARGIN MAH LAZERZ!"
Episode 17: "I'M CHARGIN MAH LAZERZ!"
Episode 18: "I'M CHARGIN MAH LAZERZ!"
Episode 19: "I'M CHARGIN MAH LAZERZ!"
Episode 20: "I'M CHARGIN MAH LAZERZ!"
Episode 21: Villian destroyed in every conceivable way.
Worst recent anime I watched, would be one piece.

Guys, I tried. I really, really tried. But I could not maintain any kind of interest in Full Metal Alchemist no matter what I did. It probably gets better later on, but I couldn't get past the first twelve episodes' underlying theme of "here's the third storyarc with the brothers Elric meeting someone helpful, the first two ended with the helpful people screwing them over or being complete sociopaths, GEE THE SUSPENSE WHAT WILL HAPPEN?"
Also - Neon Genesis has wonderful atmosphere, and there are some great ideas, but the execution is sorely lacking, and in the end the whole thing feels far too disjointed. Still, it's worth watching. Once.

I don't know if its hate exactly but I just can't seem to watch Blood Plus. I have no idea why I just can be bothered to really get into it. It really surprises me because for some reason I got into Prince of Tennis and Hikaru No Go. Both of which are not really actiony at all and strike me as moving a good deal slower than Blood plus. I guess there really is no accounting for taste. Now if you'll excuse my the next episode of Street Fighter V has finished downloading and it is demanding to be watched.
PS. That Japanese Ninja Turtles thing has made me want to rip my head open and poor bleach on my brain and I only watched up to the transformation into super turtles.
I dislike a lot of stuff, but Bleach and Naruto are...well, Bleach has a mary sue and Naruto is kinda silly, kinda stupid.

You make me sad with a thousand pains(read the manga). (especially because episode 13 is possible one of my favorite episodes, and really, the random "lets go around and do random stuff/get screwed over by random people" stops at episode 12(actually, I don't really blame you, I think episodes 11 and 12 are my least favorite of all(read the manga))
But regardless of my ramblings, it's okay if you don't like FMA. Not all can share the same love that I have for the series(read the manga).
I forgot about this:
One anime that I regret that I cannot get myself to like is Tsubasa. I absolutely love the manga, and the anime seems good enough, but I just can't get into it. I just got bored after the first two episodes.
I don't know why, but I can't seem to like a series where you can just sit down and watch pretty much any one episode and be able to follow. It's fine to have some episodes that you can do that (so that people can get interested), but, for example, every episode of Inuyasha seems to have the same underlying theme: find the jewel shards, but in no way do you need to see every one of them to follow the story because it's just random meaningless problem after another, making each episode seem kind of pointless.
But that's just me and, honostly, I'm probably the worst person to ask about opinions on anything you would watch, because I would almost always do anything rather than watch something. (I don't really like watching TV or movies that much)

Pokemon, Digimon, DBZ, DBGT, Sailor Moon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Fusigi Yugi, Battle Athletes, Wild Arms, Kirby, Sonic X, and Inuyasha. If I was to outline every one of my grievances for all of these series, it would not only take me a very long time, and a lot of brainhurt, and a lot of bringing up of bad memories, I might come across as inflammatory as well. Let me just say this; all of those shows are either really boring and lost my interest, or they are incredibly immature and cause me to roll my eyes more times than I can count, or both. Let's leave it at that.
And based off this thread and other ramblings I've read on the internet, I probably wouldn't like Naruto, One Piece, and Bleach either.
Basically, any anime I've seen that isn't FMA, Trinity Blood, or Ghost in the Shell:Stand Alone Complex makes me wanna cut myself. Oh, and CJ, episode 13 of FMA is one of my favorite eps as well. So hilarious, and yet so touching at the same time!

All sentiments on Naruto and One Piece and Bleach and such seconded. I have not the interest nor the patience to watch them or anything like them. I admit though, there was a particular fight scene in Naruto once between the show's namesake and Sasuke that I loved. It was all so... actiony.
The way I see it, though, anime these days is going downhill in terms of... quality, for lack of a better word. Not art-wise, but more... dialogue/content-wise? Maybe I'm just being lazy, I donno, but I find myself unable to watch a vast majority of the anime out there. It's just all so childish. I actually remember talking to a friend of mine once about the recurring theme of friendship saving the world and how much I hated it. I think I wanted the world to end once, just so I could laugh.
Just a personal opinion.

On a tangental note I just started watching this thing called Air Gear, about this guy competing to be the King of the Gangsta X-TREEM Techno-Rollerblading Badazzes. It actually features a character whose rollerblades are on fire. I'm tentatively filing this one under "So bad it's good," like an animated rollerblading version of Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.
It actually has a couple of things going for it that you don't usually get in this kind of thing, namely 1. his Rollerbladezing Battles TO THE DETH are actually pretty fast-paced and they generally get through one in each episode, 2. while it does feature the typically annoying "I'm totally in lurve with the hero which I will express by punching him in the face and or kicking him in the genitalia" love interest it actually counterbalances this with a character who's pretty much "No seriously main-character-guy let's fuck already, no twenty episodes of hemming and hawing and then maybe we kiss or some bullshit get your goddamn clothes off and I will fuck you right here and now."

There was one other anime I've seen that I, didn't like. I forgot the name of it, but I remember what it was about. It was a shojo anime about a teenage human girl who meets and befriends a fairy girl. Here's my take on the program: it was not fun, not funny, the plot was pointless, it was stupid, childish, and a complete waste of my time. Oh, also, tiny fairy girls with pink hair and the voice of a five-year old girl high on helium are NOT CUTE!!!!!! Kawaii my ass!!!

Ok I know I risk castration but, I hated Death Note. I only finished it because of my compulsive need to see how it ends. Which ammounted to: Well I knew that you knew that I knew that you knew that I knew that you knew that I knew that you knew that I would do that. I seriously tried explaining the ending to someone and we couldn't stop laughing at how stupid it was.
Besides Light was such a dick I found my self continually hoping he dies. Not just regular death, I mean pwnage death. Death where your screwed and you know your screwed. The Death Note itself was so cheap too which I hate in anything.
Oh and L was such a plot device. I have a weapon that kills you just by me knowing your name and face. And what do you know, a master dective appears that just happens to never show his face or give out his name. How convient.
There are so many logic problems I found myself rushing through it just so I could be done, and hopefully see Light die

Death Note. God, I hate Death Note. I suppose its plot is very good if you give it a chance, but god, the moment they stop giving it all this surreal and gothic atmosphere is the moment when I will start watching Death Note.
Overly pretentious to me, if I can say so.
I also second Inuyasha, Fruits Basket, and Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou (His and her circumstances) after the sixteenth episode. Gainax is stupid for sacking Anno in that one. Naruto is just plain stupid (what kind of ninja dresses in orange?!!), and Saikano would've been good if only its protagonists weren't such a fucking bunch of crybabies.
Oh, but which one do I loathe? Lucky Star. It's generic, stupid, bland, and the fucking opening song is driving me mad.

I generally hate any amines that can't get its shit together and wrap up in 24-or-less episodes.
I especially hate amines that are made specifically to never end. I mean, who here thinks that One Piece will ever actually have a final, concrete, resolution? And even before it got canceled I recognized Inuyasha for the never ending shard quest it was.
I'd hate Naruto a little more, but it is essentially the DBZ for this...I dunno, generation (seeing as I was a DBZ fan a mere 5 years ago, generation seems a tad much, but I can't think of another descriptor). You throw one obnoxiously optimistic main character with a dues-ex-machina winmove, a stoic friend as a foil, etc. Heck, they've even mastered the battle stretch (the only length of episodes I've seen, where they are fighting the guy who moves inside the mirrors? Three episodes of being trapped, two episodes of 'figuring the mirrors out', a pointless fake death...). But, since I was an avid DBZ watcher for awhile, I can't really berate anyone for indulging in something similar.

Beyblade, fuck Beyblade, especially the "Hey let's make a completely new series because the last one didn't suck enough!"
I used to watch the show because unfortunately I had to wake up very early to get to school and it was the only non-infomercial on TV. It was like watching a non-conventional RPG (like puzzle quest) played out in anime form, or even worse Yu-Gi-Oh with Tops. You know one where the villains are 40-year-old muscle bound men who could easily sneak up and knock out the main character (a 12 year-old boy whose parents let them wander the world or don't exist) but instead challenges them to a child's game in order to gain world-destroying powers. Also I could never tell what was going on in that series, one episode/saga the main characters would discover that their blade is weak and so they must upgrade to the new adamantium models, then next episode/sage they have to train their spirit power, then in yet the next episode/saga they had to talk to their beast spirits or something. Which brings me to my next point of stupidity, what the fuck is up with the beast spirits, "There is a legendary animal spirit trapped in this coin, go put it in your top!" and then "Hey LEGENDARY spirits capable of ripping apart mountains, why don't you go inside this arena packed with innocent spectators, and fight this LEGENDARY evil spirit capable of destroying planets. I'm sure nothing bad will happen."

Way back when, most Ninja were not trained in the art of Ninjitsu.
Actually Ninjitsu had it's origin's in Tibet where devout followers of those religions brought the art of stealth and self-ascension and complete utter discipline to Japan adopting the use of just hand-to-hand combative and stealthy techniques for use in assasination.
However, the Ninja were not as high-and-mighty in everything that you would think. The statement you made about Ninja's having mostly been farmers and hidden assassins was in fact true vis-a-vis the truth that in Ninjitsu training you are taught theatrics and assuming of identity making yourself anybody that you wanted to be for the sake of stealth. Combative wise, a Ninja's skill was their acrobatic feats able to hit-and-run at will, however in history when a ninja clan picks a fight with a Sho-gun and his Samurai, a LOT of ninja's died contrary to the belief that ninja's can kill anybody. And that's my history lesson.

On a different note, I can only say that there are a few anime's that I find dissappointing. Naruto is simply entertaining to me - NOTHING more. Excel Saga - hilarious, demented, but will offend you in some way shape or form. [Despite my eternal fandom for] Gundam SEED/Destiny - nice battles, drawn out drama far more than needed to be and a dragged out interlude to a conclusive battle and story as quick at the last 3 episodes of a 50 episode run.

I hate the Gundam series.
And by series I mean EVERY SINGLE ONE.

Trap Gunner.
One of the best PSX games in terms of originality(Compared to what I saw from american game makers).

That's the reason why I get a boner when I see a MGS4 trailer with Old Snake in it.

ok, now besides gundam wing I am not that fond of any gundam, they weren't horrible, just not great.
Only one I really hated was Gundam Wing, because its such a huge rip-off of the original. The entire plot is. Its down right sad.

Gundam Wing was totally righteous until they went into space and Oz took over the colonies, and the pilots were all like "What the hell do we do now?! We're supposed to fight Oz but now Oz owns us! I guess we fight EVERYONE!!!"
The original was probably great in its time but I'd seen Wing long before the original, so it was kinda pale in comparison.
The rest of them just seemed to be like Pokemon games after the original, milking the franchise for money. I tried watching them, and I guess 0080 was pretty nice if I could get into it (It had a Cowboy Bebop feel to it, just not as much style). The rest just didn't work for me.
Edit: For the record, Trowa is sexier.

I think that's because he was designed to be a pretty-boy like the rest of the Gundam Wing cast to bring more girls into the genre (while hopefully NOT encouraging "aishite-shonen"). Which I think SEED and Destiny encouraged a little more and more.

Was 0080 the one where they controlled them by standing in the cockpit and had the funky suits of controlling'ness?
That's the only one, aside from the first three episodes of Gundam Wing, that I enjoyed even remotely.

08th MS Team is the absolute best Gundam, becasue its about genereic soldiers in generic mobile suits, none of that Newtype crap or uber-powered Gundams that can level cities. I reccomend it strongly.
Also, Gundam Seed (all 4 of them) are godawful.

Its the best Gundam by far, since it lacks Gundams and Newtpes and such, its about people in war, its fantastic.

in mobile suit they were new types, what did they call them in Gundam Seed?

In Seed they were "Co-ordinators" I think.
Also, Ive been reading School Rumble, and I fail to see said softcore pron that was mentioned, I also find it hella funny.

They were never specified as newtypes. Coordinators were all the genetically enhanced people who waged war with those who were not. Newtypes in SEED were like two or three people who could instantly predict a combative action before it happened and sense other events [it was called "Spatial Awareness"]

Still a freakin rip off. Plot was the same, story was the same, characters were the same, mobile suits were the same, ship was the same, heck the enemy ace even had the same dumb mask/helmet thing. Think he might even have had the same name

Names were different, but I think the mask thing is one of those "Put this in every Gundam series things" like Cid, Biggs and Wedge, in Final Fantasy.
Also I hate G Gundam, only because it was called a Gundam series. If they had released it as "GIANT ROBOT FIGHTER X" or anything that didn't apply a connection with Gundam I would've probably liked it. But the Gundam mimics my moves, and the "THIS HAND OF MINE..." made it too un-Gundammy. I mean since when did Gundam's rely on Magic and the power of love, and attacks that are only utilized after repeating a catch phrase.
I mean Newtype powers were already out there, but at least then I didn't notice them because they were either rarely used, unconsciously activated, or didn't appear to the end.

fair enough. But that still doesn't excuse how other things were the same, like the plot.

Hey now, I liked G-Gundam.
The key is to not take it seriously, then its a absolute riot, and it gets even funnier if you watch the Japanese version.
I mean come on, if your over the age of 10 and can watch these shows with a straight face as you judge the show on its presentation and merits then there is seriously something wrong with you.
Also, gunslinger girl was fucking BORING. Although the 10 yr old girl killing a room full of gangsters in the first episode was amusing.
