Does anybody know how (if it's possible) to stop your CD drive from autorunning? See, I have Mechwarrior 4 Mercs, and I play it a lot. However, when you insert the disc, the autorun works to turn the game on. And my laptop (being possessed) likes to check to see if a disc is in every so often by activating the drive and autorunning whatever is in it. You can imagine how difficult it is to work with this.

Please help! Stupid thing... :stressed:

Right-click on your CD drive in My Computer and select Properties. There should be a register card labelled AutoPlay where you can adjust all kinds of automatic actions for all kinds of CDs.

Not sure how well this works for game CDs, so I googled (http://www.google.de/search?hl=de&safe=off&client=firefox-a&channel=s&rls=org.mozilla%3Ade-DE%3Aofficial&hs=m3Q&q=disable+autoplay+autorun&btnG=Suche&meta=) and found this (http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article03-018) and this (http://www.pcdoctor-guide.com/wordpress/?page_id=1546). Seems it's a bit harder in XP than earlier versions of Windows. Good thing you asked, too, now I feel re-motivated to turn off my own.

The easiest option is to simply hold down the shift key when you put a new CD into the drive. That'll override the autorun of the CD/DVD. I use it all the time.

However, all Windows systems need to have TweakUI (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx) on them.

Thanks a lot for the help. Autorun sucks. I barely notice that it's gone, now, except to think, "Wow, this is a whole lot easier now that I don't have to undo all the stuff it screwed up." Okay, that's an exaggeration, but now I don't have to close the window that pops up offering me the chance to play this game or register on the website.

Thanks again!

Eh, not really.
I find the large majority of its options to be redundant given the control a user/admin has over the machine prior to installing it.

Its not really about added functionality. Its more about presenting all the options in one place in a semi more understandable way so that the not so computer literate can optimize there computers. Personally I generally do just fine on my own but I've had experience with family members and their friends that wouldn't know the recycle bin from their display settings.
