View Full Version : Official 8 bit IRC Channel

There is an IRC channel for 8bit theater on EFnet. #8-bit.theater

if you need an IRC client, http://www.mirc.com seems to be the standard.

The channel is run by one of our mods, Shiney(Zel in the channel) and you'll also see plenty of sock man Zeth, and Bravefencer the idle king

perhaps someone can add a list of efnet servers later.

Do we have to sign up or pay for anything? If we do, I can't sign up.

P.S. Did this start because of my thread? If it did, yay, i started something good!!

no its all free. you just connect to efnet and then join the channel #8-bit.theater

You shouldn't even need the list of EFnet servers, it's all already put into mIRC when you install it. Just choose 'random EFnet server' and connect.

Sure enough, there it is. Groovy. I'll hafta check in periodically. Anyone else gonna make a point of dropping in?

I plan on checking it out quite regularly, but, I must restate my previous question:
What's the IRC Address/Port?

IRC://...what?

irc.efnet.net as far as i know...it'll be in the premade list of IRC servers on mIRC

*goes to check the premade list of IRC servers on mIRC*

yep yep *nod* that's right

IRC://irc.efnet.net:6667/8-bit.theater <-- EDIT: if you have an IRC client, that'll get you to the right server and channel right away. if it works

oh, and just to be a n00b: I R t3h IRC g0d

You sir, are an absolute GOD for posting the address!
Thankyou!! :D

+edit: well, i'm in there now... there's 5 mods, 24 voices, and even so, it seems there's very little talk.
chances are its just my irc client (HydraIRC) playing up on me, or my slow connection not keeping up, or that no-one's chatting in the main section of the channel.
nevertheless, at least the channel works

Went on there. Only people I saw speak (except for one or two pitiful attempts by me) were two...well, yeah. You can guess what things I'm thinking up.

Well, I'll still be checking it out. For some reason people seem to get on and off at exactly the same time. Maybe the channel's playing games with me too.

We are active on and off throughout the day. You just have to catch us at the right time, I guess.

Yeah, discussion wasn't exactly hopping when I was there, either. I definitely tried, though. Preached the gospel of Nerdtopia and such. I'll probably log on again soon, but not with any kind of regularity.

EFNet is stupid :p in australia it is anyway, i get a whole heap of timeouts before it decides to connect properly :-( but it's still cool

WOAH! okay so a few years ago I'm in this EFnet DBZ rpg game called DBZ Arena. It fell apart but I liked some of the people in it so I followed them to a channel called #Sexybear, that channel had problems so they moved into #Shu and later into #Idlewhores I guess If I woulda read this post more closely instead of just picking out the channel name and server I woulda have notice who would be there. Just wanna give a big shout out to everyone who never speaks :D

I can only get on the EFnet random server, and no one's ever on there.

Could we change this to channel to Qnet?

Mike McC
04-01-2004, 07:55 PM
No. You can start one up on Qnet if you want, but the one on EfNet is staying on EfNet.

I'm there every now and then. I don't say much though, primarily because I'm not that good at making conversation :-P

But I do say hi when spoken to.

There was a channel on Qnet? I was not aware.

Anyways, Brv is right. T'ain't moving. And hey Rodimus. It'sa me, Zel. :B

A couple of things:

There's a 9 letter limit on usernames, which seems silly to me. Isn't there a way to change it?

I've been there for about 2 hours and spoken to 3 people. Come on, guys. :)

And finally, the #idlerpg channel advertised in the topic must be the craziest thing I've seen on IRC. You're rewarded for not talking. Quite contradictory. I couldn't stand it. :o

1) Nope, without changing the network we're stationed on, there's no way to change that. And we aren't gonna leave EfNet.

2) Well, we do things away from the computer, too. It's just that a lot of us just leave our PCs on and connected 24/7, so there's a lot of idling going on.

3) Ah, you have not mastered the skill of IRC idling. Basically, you open up the room, and then instantly forget your in it and do something else. It's easy, M'kay?

There is no channel on Qnet...offcourse you could always start one if youd like to...

Why would we start it up there, if you're the one who wanted it there in the first place? Look, there is nothing against starting up a new one on a different server. At one point there were three chats known to us: the one on Ef, one on Dal, and one on Esper. However, the Dal one disintegrated quickly, and the Esper one never really got a large crowd in it, and eventually died out.

Well I just want to know if anybodys in to it...the Qnet channel I mean. Cause I'm not gonna go start it on my own with out anyone coming there.

So...anyone?

Meister
04-14-2004, 04:31 PM
We could make one on Qnet for the 8BT fans on this side of the Atlantic, to prevent the time zone issues... it's not as if they're so much fewer than the US ones on the current channel, from what I gather here :).

I probably would join one or both, but I'm on expensive dial-up and not online much...

Osterbaum
04-15-2004, 09:03 AM
Well atleast there is one. Anyone else? I offcourse would join this channel.

Ok so the Qnet channel is on, but it wont be for long if no one comes! There is no L yet cause of the lack of people!

EDIT: Im shutting this channel down before it even gets started. There is no point and cause there are some people who didn't like this... :D

Everyone needs to come to this! It's so cool! There's even free nacho dip and punch! Well... maybe not... but since a few of us already have massive AIM chats anyway, why not consolidate all of it into one big IRC party? It'll be fun.

Is it a good idea to do this "connection" thing via Trillian? That seems to be the only client I have and I'm lazy and can't be arsed to get another one.

And if it is: HOW in the WORLD do I go about it? I'm normally quite computer literate, but that conection manager confuses me. Then again, I maybe should try it when I'm awake.

EDIT: I think I figured it out. However, it connecteth not. Rats.

'nutha EDIT: It connecteth. Joy!

I'm not entirely sure if this should go here, so forgive me if I misplaced it. I'm not the best (I'm terrible) with computers, and I started going to #8-bit.theater a couple days ago and it worked perfectly fine, but today it doesn't load for a reason I can't discern. I open a browser, punch in the url, it "loads" and the screen is completely blank. Help?

Er... what browser are you using? You just typed in "#8-bit.theater" in the address line, and it took you to the chat!? I think you're confused. You need a special client in order to connect to IRC channels. For Windows, I would recommend mIRC. As for Mac OSX, Snak and Ircle are quite nice.

After you install the client, type '/server <whatever server you want to connect to>', and then /join <channel name>. Hope this helps.

Also, people around here are generally online when they happen to be... sometimes you're lucky, other times you'll have to suck it up. ^^

Yes, Depending what you're into..
Type /list in mIRC (Or any other IRC client) and it should generate a list of all the channels on that network. ;)

Yo! I just went on, and this JoeCB told me that it was the idle channel... And when I asked how to get to the no idle channel, he told me that that was Idle too! Now I'm confused! WAAH! And he never did tell me where the non idle channel was...

Its good that people actualy have dignity and/or even talk about 8-bit there.
I mean, one guy even tricked me into changing my nick so I would get kicked out of the channel...

That`s simply dreadful. It always saddens me that people who come together for common interest would be screwed over by some of same.

I belong to a couple of other forums, and though the majority of my fellows are decent people speaking with their peers, others treat that avatar like there is no actual intelligence behind it. (ie., "The internet isn`t real, therefore the people that I am conversing with aren`t real, either.")

The lesser mature people are usually just that: younger, less mature people. Perhaps not maliciously evil, but able to get their kicks at others` expense.
As stated before: the majority of us are decent kids, no matter what our age. I`ve just noticed though that the jerks are usually the younger ones. (Please don`t flame me for that observation! :D)

To Shiney: You are the apex of civilization, sir. Thank you for the help getting me on the mIRC. The instructions worked beautifully.
I tried to PM you again, but your inbox was full. I can almost guess of what. ;)

There is another question, though. When I signed up, it said I only had like, 30 days before it asked me for $20 USD. I don`t have a credit card, even if I did want the program. What`s registration, exactly? And is there any way to keep the mIRC without spending a million dollars, which is what $20 USD would be for me?

Thank you again, Shiney.

To everybody else: the mIRC was lonely, with just me there watching the glowing monitor. Is there anyway we can figure out a `hang out`time on a regular basis? That way we`re not chopped up and wondering if we got to the right place. Also, if we had a few set times a month, we can arrange our lives to that... or at least bend our mind that way. lol

I've found that it's actually easier (and safer) to just chat in the 8bit room on AOL. I removed mIRC after some stuff that I didn't remember downloading got downloaded onto my computer (thank heaven for System Restore!). Also, I didn't like the idea of giving the program access through my firewall, having to pay just to chat with fellow NPF members, or dealing with the less-than-polite people who took over the 8BT IRC room (I witnessed what happened to poor Geza).
