What can I say about it? It's remarkably good, and on such a small budget. Gainax sertainly hit a high there! The final episode is so intense! It's only six episodes long, but they're all packed! FLCL ROCKS!!!

Indeed. It's ths type of sheer insane energy and flat out insanity that we need more of. I demand more like this!

The only thing I didn't understand was why everybody says it is deeper than Evangelion. I don't think anything could be deeper than that. Especially with only six episodes. I couldn't discern a ton of philosophy. Notwithstanding it is indeed a excellent series. Gainax I want to have your children!! Unfortunately I'm a guy but after I saw Twins I have newfound hope.

Meh, personally I found it kind of boring. I don't enjoy being beaten over the head with blatant symbolism, and I'd already had my fill of senseless insanity from Excel Saga. Very, VERY nice soundtrack though.

Gainax, may I please be buttsecksed by you?

Anyways, nothing can quite be as deep as Evangelion.

It had a good plot if you were able to find it and the soundtrack does kick ass! The band is called The Pillows and thier music is awsome. I watched this and excel saga right after the other. I dreamt I was getting attacked by insane puuchuus with guitars led by a dog on a vespa...

Yeah, as far as i know there isnt any thing as deep, and mind wrenching as Evangelion. I swear after End of Evangelion i was left scratching my head and thinking to my self WTF?!

But I will agree with you all that FLCL is an awsome anime regardless of how short it is.

Okay FLCL was great. We all agree on that, but who do you think the best character in the series is? Personally I think Ninamori-san was the best. I still crack up whenever she puts her finger through her glasses and says, "They're fake." Maybe it's just me.

I love The Pillows. They're somewhere between Weezer and Blink 182, methinks (in terms of genre). I'm listening to "Thank you, my Twilight" right now. SUCH a good song...

I think the series was wonderful (as to why I bought the series, soundtracks, artbook, and a wallscroll directly after AdultSwim showed it=). If anything I think the only things missing are more episodes. What's your favorite song? Mine's is Stalker goes to Babylon (the theme played when Naota explains the game Firestarter during the 2nd episode, titled Fire Starter). My favorite character is Haruko Haruhara (chick that rides a bike + plays guitar = goddess=). j/k

I like "Come Down". And "Happy Bivouac" (Was that on the soundtrack? Whatever, it's still a good song).

The pillows did an excellent job with the soundtrack, my favorites are "Little Busters" and "Advice"

Yay....I must say i LOVE the soundtrack and my favorite character is Haduko ( chick bashing things with gutiar? ^_^) I wish they would dub more episodes into American, though.....there are like more than 5,000 episodes.....And they only show six.....Gainax must have had some time on their hands. lol :wmage:

my freind got me into FLCL (she's convinced she's Raharu), took me like six months to find anyone with the episodes online. truely fantastic stuff. #5's my favorite, the lupin and south park parodys are just hillarious.

other good Pillows songs are "Crazy Sunshine" and "One Life"

FLCL wouldn't be good if it didn't carry nice little symbols. Its a retarded show, with no actual point, but the philosophy behind it is well done. i found that they threw it into your face a bit too much tho. Kenshin, Naruto, even feggin' Megaman (all anime here, ppl) had huge tracts of philosophy

Example: FLCL shows that there is both a fear of uniform thought, and an inevitability towards it. Likewise, it shows that jealousy and love all reduce the capability to think

Example of non FLCL philosophy: Naruto shows a Calvinist picture of the world, in which people are fated to be good or bad (represented via the use of childhood memories). It also shows the value of perseverance, and the effect is has upon others (water country story ark mostly). It touches upon how ideals sometimes cross and leave behind many hurt and wounded, but implores them to get back into the fight. (Gaara vs. Rock Lee, and the subsequent hospital scene w/ Lee).

anyways, that's all off the top of my head, so don't expect a nice essay thesis to be in there

FLCL rocks my world. Who cares about the philosophy? It's on at midnight in my area, and nothing is better than watching full-on insanity while trying to write an Economics paper. Yes, there's all the symbols adn philosophybut you don't have to watch it for that. You can watch it for the pure fun of it.

I watched the whole series on Adult Swim when they ran through them the first time. I watched mostly because I like to believe that I have an open mind. Though I was left scratching my head quite a bit.

"Ok, so the main premise is that there's this alien chick who rides around on a motorscooter and wangs people on the head with a gas-powered guitar...."

It was CERTAINLY original, no doubt about it. I was able to understand the REAL basic premise behind it, that is, the whole Pirate King bit and Haruko wanting his power, and all that. But in general, I couldn't make head or tail out of it until someone with half a brain explained it on the AS boards.

My only complaint about the whole affair is that it tended to become somewhat chaotic at times. Which, when you look at the point the creators were trying to get across, actually makes the most sense to present it in a chaotic fashion.

Lucas

The japanese version is highly superior... the chaos is tightly melded into the rhythym of the philosophical unfolding. The pace mirrors the turbulence and reflection of the transition from boy to man.

personally i think the series is purely crap unless the philosophy is looked at. there's no purpose to the love of the pirate king, and his method of appearance isn't explained, which raises the question of how he manifested himself in that way if metal mecanica had their plans fulfilled via the completion of the terminal core. even then, why did the hand appear in that way? shouldn't metal mechanica have made their own?

these plot holes show that the series's actual events aren't really possible or plausible, but rather symbolic. and in that way they actually make plenty of sense

edit: i see typo.. i kill typo

Anyways, nothing can quite be as deep as Evangelion.

Yes, ahem... I really don't agree with that at all. Eva was about as deep as a puddle on the side of the road. Read a novel sometime, you'll see what I mean.

Now, I have nothing against Eva, I did enjoy it. But I'm sick of it being spouted as one of the greatest things to hit American shores EVER. I can't say I didn't enjoy it, but the religious symbolism was muddled and inconsistant, and frankly, Shinji is a whiney little bitch, his character was badly written throughout the whole series. And the ending (not the alternate ending in the movies, the ending that was part of the series) really was quite disappointing.

The best thing to ever hit American shores was the Beetles anyway. You've heard of them, right?

I swear no one pays any attention to me...

not to prod, but Haruko has a bass that she hits stuff with...does any one exactly know why she has a bass as opposed to a guitar??

Hamelin
11-20-2003, 01:36 PM
A gasoline powered Bass with a pull start, no less.

The Shockster
11-20-2003, 01:44 PM
The principle behind the bass is that, well, The pirate king has a guitar. She has a bass. Think about it. It's the fact that the Guitar and the Bass are partners showing rage through music. Makin fun of American music if ya ask me..... like all that heavy metal stuff..

uh, Ham, didn't you get in trouble at the old forums during the epic Eva debate? [/offtopic]

So yeah, I think I saw FLCL, but my brain was incapable of processing that much randomness at once.

It's the final climax!
:D

The Pillows' music is superb. It's so...electric! It inspires me.

I enjoyed FLCL alot. It's probably the whacked-out randomness that I liked the best. I laughed the most when they did a parody of Lupin III.

I was waiting for someone to disagree with the sentiments of most of these posts, Hamelin.

FLCL was entertaining. A nice mix between utter stupidity and Anno's odd imagination.
If anyone is a fan of anime music videos, I would recommend "Shameless Rock Video," as it is set to Furi Kuri and edited very well. The eyebrows are a key factor of one scene.

Yes, but only because I didn't back up my post with why I don't think Eva is all that it's cracked up to be. Here I have.

FLCL is probably my newest favorite anime. I only say the last episode, and the one before it, and I don't get the plot, but the art is top notch, and, best of all, it's funny randomness!

I never watched it. I think I need to. Kazaa time.

Krylo

I always just considered the coming of age thing to BE the plot... everything else was too nonsensical to be a plot, but I most certainly loved this anime like no other. Also of note is the fact that it parodies everything... even itself.

I. Hate. FLCL. There was no plot, the utter randomness wasn't funny, and any symbolism and philosophy aren't realized in the show. I just don't see how anyone can rave on and on about it, when it's obvious the show is horrible. The animation is the only real plus for the show, and good animation does not a good show make.

I watched it now, and did a bit of internet time to figure it out, too.
I was pretty much wierded out, but in a good way, and boy, the all the innuendo, and the kid doesnt care.

Xeno, I agree entirely, as does a friend of mine. I enjoy good anime, and FLCL just didn't work for me at all. It's amazing how much suckiness they were able to pack into just six episodes. I watched the first episode when it was on Adult Swim and was blown away by the utter craptitude. I finished watching the series with a friend because it was amusing to MST3k the hell out of it.

I'm not sure what some of you guys see in this series, but hey, if it floats your boat all the better for you.
