Mwahahaha. I unstickied the wedding thread because, hell, it's almost been two years now! If people didn't know that we're married then I'd wonder where they've been all this time!
http://www.avariel.net/~rairai/pregnant.jpg
Ya have to squint a little. It does say 'pregnant' from the right angle.
Yes, Shiney and I are expecting our first baby! And considering most of you are guys you're probably gonna go 'Ewwww' or somesuch, but I don't care.
Advice? Worries?

With all kidding aside let me be the first to congratulate you. Well, at least the first one in this thread. Have you guys considered any names yet?

EDIT: Also I find it kind of weird that yesterday I was thinking the exact same thing about the "are married" thread.

Hah, good luck with that.
At one point my wife wanted to have kids, but she's always been leery about the whole 'something kicking me down there' feeling. It's almost like a bad episode of Aliens or something.
Of coarse, being the loving and caring husband I am, I wanted to reassure her that it would be ok. So, while she was at work one day, I went to her computer in the main bedroom, and set this as her background...
http://www.toocurious.com/newspic/baby's_kick.jpg
Then I put her Firefox back up. She doesn't shut down her computer. We just leave it running because of torrents for the most part. A couple of weeks later, she was doing some maintenance on her computer and finally decided to shut down. Suddenly, I hear this bloodcurdling scream from the back of the apartment.
It was good times.
Oh, and just a minor reminder of what you have to look forward to...

Do you and shiney know your blood types, RaiRai? If you are Rh negative and your baby is Rh positive, it could cause problems later on down the line.
Also, are you planning on learning the baby's sex before he or she is born, or would you prefer it to be a surprise?
RaiRai

Names: Samuel if it's a boy and the girls name was originally going to be Emily, but too many people I know have chosen that name, so working on something new.
Blood types: I have absolutely no idea on my blood type. Shiney is A+.
And yes, we would like to know the sex of our baby in advance as we've a lot of moving around and plans within the next few years, so it'll make things a little more stable for us.

It's pretty important that you find out your blood type as soon as you can. If you are Rh negative, your OBGYN will probably give you a RhoGam shot so that your immune system won't mistake your unborn baby for a foreign body and attack it.

You know... those pregnancy tests generally work by pissing on them... and so, for some reason, I can't get past the fact that there's a picture of something Rai has pissed on posted on the forums.
Gimmie a few hours to wrap my head around that and then I'll say something about the demonspawn.
P.S. Never ever follow B_real's naming advice, unless you're following the "Boy Named Sue" school of parenting.
I suggest Lisa. I've yet to meet a Lisa who wasn't attractive and intelligent, and, well, I figure with you two as parents you could probably help to eliminate that slight oddity for me. Or maybe just do what I do when I try to think of a character name: Mash a bunch of letters together until you get something vaguely name-like.

My wife and I usually get into spats about what our future adopted child's name might actually be. First problem would be the last name. She kept her last name when we got hitched because she didn't like mine. And I'll be damned if I'll ever change my last name to Fry, so that was that.
Second problem is that most of the names we'd pick for children would come from video games, or movies (a lot like our cats).
For some odd reason, she originally wanted a girl named Tuesday Ann. Now she's leaning toward Lennith. But if it's a boy, I get my way (supposedly). I'm leaning heavily toward something normal, like Alucard.

Remind me to never ask you or your wife advice on naming a child.
But seriously, whatever you choose for the name, for the love of god, don't try to "unique" it up by making it spelled stupidly. Such as a girl named "Loghanne" or "Lae" = "Leia". (remember parents: having an accent over a vowel does not give you the right to pronounce it however the hell you want)
Otherwise: congrats and good luck with the bundle of joy.

Let's try and avoid more pee euphemisms, okay? I think that was what derailed the last topic about this subject. And it's kind of creepy.
More on par, though - Try going through a name website of sorts and just browse around. If you're anything like me (writer, I mean, I don't even have a kid yet), you get to/come up with a name where you just go, "OH! THAT! That's perfect!"
I still like Alexander for a boy, though. I always liked that name.

Contrary to other opinions I like Alucard as a name. And if he doesn't like it he could always go by Al, like almost everyone who's name begins with that or he could go with Luc/Luke. Plus Alu seems like a really cute baby name.
Just make sure to keep up a tan mate.

But I'd rather torture the little bastard by giving him my name, which is worlds more difficult to pronounce. +1 for Futurama references though.
It's Quiles if anyone is curious. Everyone mangles it.
The way I see it is that if I had to deal with teachers making me look like a fool for 25 years (hey, I'm still in college, so this is legit), then there's no reason I can't pass on the pain.
It's the least I can do.
Remind me to never ask you or your wife advice on naming a child.
Y'know, one of these days I'll have to ask her where she got Tuesday Ann. As far as Lennith goes, we can blame Valkyrie Profile for PSP.

So this is the thread where we give you unsolicited, probably useless, and possibly dangerous parenting advice? 'Cos if it is, I'm just bursting with things I heard are good ideas!
Like reading to the kid: Start now, if not sooner. Couldn't hurt; my mother began to read to me in utero and didn't stop (except obviously for the C-section). And I turned out perfectly normally! Stuff appropriate for their age, stuff you figure is a bit over the kid's head, stuff that's probably waaay out of their league--read it all. And lots and lots of music, from all sorts of different genres (not just that classical stuff; some of my earliest memories are of MTV music videos, back when that channel actually featured music). It's getting the brain to work hard from early on that's the point.
I'm a helper! ^_^

Look, I get what you're saying, the name by itself is pretty neat, but honestly, how is having your name as Dracula reversed not going to completely fuck this kid up?
If you're lucky he'll just settle for drinking blood and playing Dungeons and Dragons, and always insisting on playing a vampire. That's if you're lucky.
Honestly, just a few letter swaps in Alucard (like Alcard for example, or Aluca) and you would have a 99%* chance of having a normal kid.

So now the kid simply dosent like meat (even though he tried) and is as polite as ever... sure i'll screw him up soon enough as a good uncle as i am, but serves to show'ya... those first years/months can be really big if you gather info now and get ahead on the game...

I'm sure you already know most of this, but the first thing you need to do is show them love. Kiss their foreheads a lot and give them physical attention. Also, you can never sing or tell them stories enough. It incites creativity, even in a newborn and helps them later in life. My parents say I always loved when my mom played the keyboard and sang or my dad played the guitar.
My boyfriend's step-mom currently has two on the way (due in about a week), so I might have some more advice for you after the fact. I'm going to be over there all the time helping take care of them (twin girls, wee).

Baby items and cheesecake welcome.

I'm not bent out of shape about it, you've got priorities and all, but I was just trying to knock a quick joke.

You know, someone else said the same thing to me. And Tyrazial is actually buying me a DS so I can play said games. XD I really, really don't know what else to say other than thank you so much. Never realized some of you crazies on this forum were that crazy.
The bed rest is okay. I don't mind not moving around, it's not like I did much moving around before anyway what with being sat at my desk at my computer all day. But alas, my mother in law is watching me like a hawk, so bed is where I stay! I just don't like drinking all the water they're asking me to drink. I understand why I need to do it, I just don't like it.
Fifth: My brother is called Daniel, and he'll be my only little Danny-boy. He's only 7 this year. Still a little baby to me.
Our baby is either going to be named Samuel or John. This is dependant on a few factors, but we'll know closer to the time. I think I'd get confused to have my son called John with my husband called John, though.

Well a majority of us - Myself, for example - practically watched you two fall in love from across the seas. We're all extremely happy for you and Shiney both. I'm not sure if you remember me, but I know I sure as hell remember you two back when you were just the mod of the RP forums back in the EZ Whores days.

It's pretty important that you find out your blood type as soon as you can. If you are Rh negative, your OBGYN will probably give you a RhoGam shot so that your immune system won't mistake your unborn baby for a foreign body and attack it.
As I recall, that can't happen on the first pregnancy. I don't remember the exact reasons, but I remember looking it up one time.
Jeneralissimo

I don't think so. My mother had this blood type, and I was her first pregnancy (unless my parents aren't telling me something). I know she was treated for it.
BitVyper
08-12-2007, 07:15 PM
Also: Congratulations Shiney and Rairai. Now's your chance to put your gaming experience to use and try to min/max a real person.
Edit:Now that I've looked it up, it's usually not a factor during first pregnancies because the mother hasn't become sensitive to that Rh factor yet. It's still not a bad idea to get it checked out though, because it can happen, it's just a lot rarer the first time around.
Rh sensitization does not generally affect the health of the baby during the pregnancy in which the sensitization occurs. However, the baby of a future pregnancy is more likely to be affected if the baby's blood type is Rh-positive. Once sensitization has occurred, the baby can develop mild to severe problems (called Rh disease, hemolytic disease of the newborn, or erythroblastosis fetalis). In rare cases, if Rh sensitization is not treated, the baby may die.
Of course, any doctor worth a salt is going to make sure anything dangerous is dealt with, so I'm sure Rairai and Shiney don't need the medical expertise of us forumers. They're probably saving that for the child's cybernetic upgrades.
Edit: And now that I've read the entire thread, I see that my post is pointless anyway. Hurrah!
