I've decided to start a spriting competition. It's just friendly competing, but the winner will receive a trophy.
The basic premise of the competition is that people on this forum will submit a sprite picture. That is to say, a single frame featuring editted0 FF sprites. They can feature any characters, NPF or no, but the characters, if not from NPF or some other popular source, must have their personality and backstory explained to me. If it is not obvious, what is going on and why it is happening must be explained also. There will be no specific topic for the submissions.
There will be three sections.
Comedy: Straight forward jokes and hilarity.
Randomosity: Really random jokes and general jokes.
Seriousness: Serious, emotional, or dark. Not much room for humor here.
Edit: Animations: Can be any of the above three, but animated. Will be graded on all of below, but also on how well it is animated (how smooth the animation is) and how well the characters stand still.
Each one will be reviewed and graded on how well it is done, humor, and neatness (white space deleted, etc.). There will be a top 3, as well as an honorable mention, in each section. A total review will be posted with each one. Reviews for those not in the top 3 or HM can be posted upon request.

Will YOU be in your own contest?

So what we're trying to do is use an NPF custom sprite and put into a funny scene basically, like a one panel comic? And does it have to be an edit of an FF sprite? I'm not really very good at those but pretty good in other styles. And why an edit? Can't it be custom, like 100% custom?

They must all be editted from FF4,5,or 6 sprites so it is easy to judge. If you have a custom sprite that looks very similiar to that style, then you can use it pending my approval.
Nikose: I will not be in the contest.

I would so totally submit this (http://forum.nuklearpower.com/showpost.php?p=337140&postcount=787) as an entry if not for the 16-bit sprite limitations...
*Shrug* I'll just have to think of something else... hmm...

Okay I want to participate in this but does anyone know of any free animation softwares that are good?

Well there's graphics Gale Free edition, and you can just plainly use the paint program that came with windows. Heres the website for graphics gale: http://www.aptrio.com/Multimedia/Animation/graphicsgale-2390.html

It doesn't have to be animated.

Yeah but I would like for it to be animated to get the full effect of the joke you know?

Sounds neat, but if you wanted a *REAL* challenge, I've got one for you. See, I'd like to animate the actual in-game Fiends sprites into something that Brian could use. Especially for the rematch they're bound to have when they fight Chaos.
Thing is, this has proven to be beyond my ability. (Or at least it beyond my patience.) So, maybe others might want to take a whack at it? If it seems like an interesting idea, I could certainly provide the sprites required.

Well, count me out. I'm not too good with that 16 bit FF stuffs.

Ok, in order to get more applicants, they no longer have to be 16-bit. They just have to be FF sprites.

Not really good at that either. I'll be in the next one if there are less limitations.

First off: Does this have Mod approval?
Second off: Why with all the limitations? I'd join, but the only good example of spriting I have (which is nothing but a MegaMan Recolor) is this (http://s10.photobucket.com/albums/a121/NuklearFenris/th_16Technobum.gif), and it's supposed to be an avatar, thus it staying in the center (in case you were going to ask about that).
Third off: I might join the next one.

I can see the limitations on here because you can do a lot more with Megaman sprites than you can with FF sprites, and most the artists here are FF sprites so he went with that.
SWB, can I see those sprites your talking about required?

Okay, but don't say I didn't warn you.
(What do you mean I didn't warn you? I did just then, start paying attention!)

There you go. What I'd like to see done, is animate the big in-game graphics. Kinda like I tried to start with on Lich. And the oh-so-pathetic attempt I did with Kary.
If anyone can do it, it would certainly be something Brian might find worthwhile for the final battle.

You weren't kidding when you said it was hard. But, exactly what do you want animated? Like a fight scene, or just like walking? This looks a lot easier if you just used the small sprites.

Why do you think I'm trying to push this job onto other people? This is something that I think would be good for the comic, I never said I thought it was humanly possible. But I digress...
First of all, think each sprite needs a decent standing position. That's pretty much done for Kraken & Lich, but Kary, Tiamat & (too a lesser degree) Chaos all need to be brought in line.
Next, I wouldn't mind independent arm movement. Kinda like I started with for Lich, but with better poses.
Nothing all too much, but something that looks like they're taking a swipe at you.
For the standing poses:
For Kary, I'd like manage her hair better & coil up her snake tail beneath her. You can see my failed attempt at both. Don't worry about putting swords in her hands, and I think the arms should be placed seperatly, like I did with Lich.
For Kraken, his tentacles need to be made independent. To do that, I suggest removing his head & fixing the bit of light blue neck thing so it doesn't have any tentacle under it. After that, I'd like to see at least two tentacles being able to move independently. And much like Lich, I think they should be placed aside.
For Tiamat, well that's the most difficult. I'm prone to think he'd look better with all the heads facing one direction. This doesn't mean you have to edit all for heads, but rather use the heads a bit more creatively. I think a sideways pose might be the easiest. And while the necks will need adjustment, the back three heads could be all used. Of course, because of this you're pretty much in grey area when it comes to the body. I however recommend at least stealing a leg from Chaos.
As for Chaos... Well I'd like to get his legs both on the floor. Which might be as simple as making the right leg work for both sides. Then add some independent arm movement. And maybe, if you're feeling ambitious, head movement (like what I did for Lich). Oh, and maybe a big hand swipe sprite that has no arm, much like I've seen in many fighting games.
