The point of this thread is to tell stories about horrible things that have happened to you game related, not bad video games themselves, but tragic events like memory card corruption near the end of a game.
For me, my experience (and inspiration) for this thread was recent, a few minutes ago in fact. I never played Kingdom Hearts when it first came out, and I hate playing sequels (that continue storylines) without playing the original especially RPGs, so last week when I was over at my friends house and saw he had the original Kingdom Hearts in his 'games I've played, and beaten' stack (he takes horrible care of his games, leaves em in one big stack once he's through with them.) I asked to borrow, he informed me it probably didn't work, but it did work perfectly. So all this week I've been playing it, and it has been running fine, except for today when I finally beat it, after fulfilling all the secret ending conditions. When all of a sudden during the ending movie, after the final boss fight it finally locked up. In the middle of the movie, **spoiler** right as the two platform/islands begin to seperate Kairi and Sora **End of Spoiler*** If anyone would happen to know where I can find the complete ending movie (with secret ending) perferably with credits and everything online to the original Kingdom Hearts could you please link to it.
So what are your stories?

Armored Core 3 turnament with my friends.
I only remember this because I bought AC:LR today.
Game locks up right at the ending of the last semi-final match. We restart it...then it will never EVER finish loading any map. Ever.
So yea, we were pissed. But we'll make up for it. >:D *plays LR more*
Also, when I actually played YuGiOh: Dark Duel Stories (God, why did I ever play that game?), it once froze up whilst I was making the LAST attack I needed to win the dual against a friend. Even though I would have one, no doubt, he insisted on calling the match a draw since I never finished.
So yea, those are the only two I can remember.

Buying Unlimited Saga right when it came out.
Then actually playing the game.
Finally, realizing that the number of unfinished games is longer than my arm.

Ouch. I, likewise, feel your pain. To think I actually stopped from my lifelong pledge of never playing another MMORPG again because this game looked like it would make MMORPGs into something new and fun. And look what they did! EVERQUEST 1.5! Purple lightsabers....do poision damage! LOL!
But I digress. Um....in recent memory, the worst thing to happen to me having to do with gaming is going to Anime Expo. Met a bunch of cool people and we all signed up to be in the Smash Bros tournament. I spent 2 hours just confirming I could play (there was over 300 people signed up), then 2 more hours waiting till they started. Then, the fateful announcement.
...the game would be set to Final Destination, 4 on 4 Melee, no items, 3 stock.
Obviously, I lost in the first round. With a sheik and a fox player going against a Link (me) and a Ganondorf player, all we could do is lose when they fix the game so its set up PERFECTLY for either Fox or Sheik to win. And obviously, a sheik player won the whole tournament (as the finals were all sheik and fox people).

How about awhile ago when I was playing Sophitia's Tales of Souls in Soul Calibur III and got slaughtered by Taki no less than fifty times before finally giving up? I practically did cry. Geez. Every time I tried to attack, she would guard or break my grab and hit me four times in response. Then I would attack again. Lather, rinse, repeat.

When I first played FF7 it was on a computer version, and, frankly, my computer sucking added to the horrible way the CD of FF7 had been kept (we had borrowed it from my brother's friend) could only spell disaster.
Anyway, I had been playing the game, and because of my computer sucking so badly, it was EXTREMELY slow, so a 5 minute scene would at least double in length because of how slow it was. Anyway, I had somehow made my way through the game until the scene where the Weapons were released. Well, at the very END of that scene (more precisely, right when the emerald weapon (I believe it was) put his hand up onto the snowy ledge) the game would error and freeze. Well I tried many many times to get it to work.
Which meant sitting through that scene many many times. And that scene is long to begin with, but on my computer.... well... I had started just reading a book as I clicked through the dialogue. And I NEVER got it to work! *sobs* It still haunts me.
Other stories would be something like working forever to unlock something onto to have the data corrupted, or the power blinks out.
Oh yeah. I am forced to remember the time that I had been playing Star Ocean: Til the End of Time, and I was about 20 hours into it. Well one night I was spending the night with my best friend and decided to show her the game. So we started a new game and she plays through a bit.
Well at one point when we are saving her progress, I notice that something looks different about MY save slot.... Yes. on accident she had accidentally saved over my game. so I went from being 20 hours into the game to about 2 hours into the game. Depressing.

ironic...I'm having the same problem with FFVII too right now and was going to post it. I'm trying to figure out a way to bypass it. I was thinking of maybe replacing the movie with another movie...one that works.
I can view the movie straight off the disk if I skip one wee bitty portion of it that lasts no longer than half a second. So I did that. Now I just need to be able to do that in game.

Right now I'm having a horrible time trying to get Poster Duty accomplished in under thirty seconds in KH2 to complete Jiminy's journal.
It takes freakin' more than a second just to place each poster up on the wall, thus leaving you less than 10 seconds to actually get from point A to point B to point C, etc.
Even with every Drive Form ability maxed out, Sora still just ain't fast enough a glider.
Damn you KH2. After getting 99.9% of you completed -- including the entire damn synthesis and Sephiroth -- I can't believe a Twilight Town minigame is my undoing.

HA! I've played both Star Wars Galaxies AND Unlimited Saga! My friend tried to give the later to me for keeps. I almost had to pay him to take it back.
Anyway, let me recall some disapointments I have experienced.
-Having my Wario Land 2 game copied over after my brother borrowed it, even after I specifically told him several time, "Do not start a new game, it will save over mine." Although, to be fair, the same thing happened to him when he lent someone his game out, except his was Pokemon: Yellow. Ouch.
-"Misplacing" above game. Conviniently after the above event occured.
-Accidently deleting my level 99 warrior in Gauntlet Legends. Luckily, my brother had a level 99 wizard who I converted to a Minotaur and saved on my old file, so not much was really lost.
-Having Oblivion freeze over whenever the tiniest little interuption occurs (IM, pop-up, random alert, you name it, it breaks it).
-Having a week where I would get no less than 400 ping in every online game I played. Not to mention the problems it gave Guild Wars, which I will only describe as "challenging".
ZERO.

Playing KOTOR on my computer, and then every time I reach the cutscene where I arrive at the second planet- the planet where the Jedi Council is supposed to be- and the ship lands, and then the game goes, "Error, Windows has detected a problem and needs to close".
I never picked it up since.

I was at a sleepover at my cousins' house; I'd just gotten myself a Game Boy Color and a copy of Earthworm Jim: Menace 2 The Galaxy with eighth grade graduation money (as my school was kindergarten through eighth grade, it was a big deal). It was a fairly kickass game, as I recall--but then, I always enjoy Earthworm Jim. Anyway, I was showing off my new game and system and receiving the requisite oohs and ahs and that; and soon enough we all settled down to sleep. Now, I definitely remember putting my GBC in the backpack I'd brought my stuff in, with the game; but when I woke up, the Game Boy was there, but no EWJ. And of course, neither of my cousins had any idea where it went, nope, not at all, sorry, can't help you there.
You know what the real hell of it is? If they'd of just let me finish the damn game, I'd have been glad to lend it to them.
Now, I figure what I should've done is taken their copy of Super Mario Land, if they were gonna do that to me.

Here's three.
One recent: I've been getting really, really good at Smash Bros. Melee recently. To the point where I'm considering "going pro" with it on some level. But some days I don't practice and some days I'm just off, and the most embarrassing day was a on thursday--me and my friend played against this 10 year old shiek. No l cancels, no short hopping, he just used simplicity to kick the living shit out of us.
I beat him once, so I know I can do it--and I still think given certain conditions it would be more fair, but goddamn we were getting ripped apart.
My other ones have to do with erasing saves: Final Fantays Tactics, ps1--Years ago. I'm talking to people in the 8-bit chat about FFT. I'd been having trouble with this particular battle, and in order to be able to detail what went wrong more easily, I ran upstairs to boot up the game.
Thing is, I had one of those "dual" memory cards with two "sides" to it--you press the button, flips to the other side--because I had so many psx games and so many saves. It seemed like a good idea at the time.
Problem is, these things are notorious for erasing your data if you fool with them wrong. Here I am trying to access my data and I can't seem to do it for some reason. Beep. Beep. Beep. Come on.
You know how it goes--ultimately, one side (the one with FFT on it) got wiped. I was...pissed. Yeah.
Other one was many years before that, saving over a Banjo-Kazooie endsave that was half my brothers. In retrospect I guess it wasn't that bad; we'd beaten the game before (an dkept a save for click clock wood...come on man, don't tell me you didn't run around that level just for the sights!), but it was distressing because it was our baby and I...fuckin' deleted it.
My brother would probably have more than me: I was always the annoying little brother who accidentally overwrote your saves (not alwways...just it happened more than once to my brother).
Oh, and once in 5th grade my Smash Bros. file got erased by a friend. I nearly cried.

-I was playing Baldur's Gate: Dark Allaince 2 with my sister. We were getting bored of it before we even finished, so we looked up some cheat codes and found out how to make our characters invincible. After doing so, we played for about three or four hours without bothering to stop at a save point. We figured we couldn't die, so nothing could possibly go wrong. So naturally, after a long, long battle without saving our game... The power goes out.

Haxmage, the answer is on Youtube. Seen it, but... it's 1 AM for me. I'm NOT digging it up for you.
My worst game moment... I have two, so a tie. BG: DA 1 for PS2, same game as Mauve, I accidentally erased my level 47 elf sorceress, ((who I had STR, WIS, INT 99, and I was ADVANCING the others; I kept cheating her level back down to 20. :P)) with a level 2 elf sorceress, with all the gear i was trying to duplicate and sell. T_T
The second worst, Soul Calibur 3. Fought for HOURS to unlock Amy. Followed instructions, did my best on route to Amy... Thought I was really pro. Accidentally found my path to Night Terror, for the VERY. FIRST. TIME.
Long story short, GIANT CREATURE OF HATE AND DEATH provided free samples to Seigfried. I died, and my record may show NO losses with Seigfried, so I had to reset. T_T
My two worst, and I DID cry with the Soul Calibur 3 thing.
PS: Mammothtank, I'm going to MAIL you my memory card; beat Sophitia and Cassandra for me in Tales of souls, I HATE those characters. :P

Playing FFX. Had a 60+hour save, all the Al Bhed Primers, beat Sin. Was keeping it around cause it was the first time I beat the game, and for blitzball. So, I start a new game, just for shits and giggles, and what do I do? SAVE OVER my save file. Lost all that work. Damn near cried.
Years ago-I was playing FFVII on our PS1. Got to the Temple of the Ancients. PS1 dies. I was so upset. Then, we got it for the PC. My brother played it till he got to the Forgotten City, then handed it off to me. Got to beat the game on the Puter, not PS1... Ah well.

I forgot to mention this earlier but, back when Harvest Moon 64 was brand new me and a friend spent 12 straight-friggin hours getting me married and purchasing most the good stuff (I say me and a friend but the friends part was mostly keeping a guide on how to marry Karen while he was looking at porn.) So I decide after so many hours of play to save and turn off the game and goto bed. I was at year 5. The same friend had a file which he was proceeding in doing fairly well in but he was only on year 2. We are VERY competitive in our gaming ways. So anyways I got kicked out of his house really early that morning and forgot to take my game with me. I go home sleep and decide to go back over and pick it up. I get there his little brother is playing so I go bug him for a while... His brother gets off and I quickly sprint to the 64 to play my file.
It was gone in it's place was a place to open a new file. My friend proceeded to blame it on his brother, whom I shortly thereafter questioned and he proceeded to deny it like I never saw him deny anything before (in other words real well). Now two things wrong with this the friend would normally have beaten the living daylights out of his little brother for this sort of thing even if it was my file but, he didn't. The second thing being his file was now two years farther than it was before. I began bringing games over there again about 2 years later, I shall never forget!!! nor forgive..

near-100% in timesplitters 2 when my jerk roommate turned off the ps2 while the game was saving.
at the last boss of Breath of Fire III when I decided you know what, fuck this game. Then I come back, like, a year later and decide what the hey, I'll play through that again. Except the memory card I had the endgame saved on was busted.
Was at the end of GTA: Vice City, like, right before the final mission, and my jackass roommate - the same jackass roommate, come to think of it - saved over my goddamn game.
When I was like 10 or some shit, was playing FF, got all the way up to the Marsh Cave, and my friend's jerkass brother drops the cartridge on the pavement between our houses. Got back up to the goddamn Marsh cave, then my goddamn sister manages to drop the fucking cartridge on the pavement.
That's about it I guess.

The time I completed three sets of Master Materia (Master Magic, Command, and Summon) in FF7 so all my characters could do everything. Do you know how many battles it takes to master Knights of the Round? Twice??
I was zombiefied by the hours of playing for AP, so I started up a new game to refresh myself. Of course, I somehow managed to replace the old file with the new one. It was four years before I played that game again.
I also regret playing FF8 at all.

Speaking of game purchases I regret: Once, when I was younger, I needed a fix of something new for my SNES--anything would do, I thought. So from a discount bin at the local Fred Meyer I bought myself Lester the Unlikely.
Urgh. That's five dollars and two and a half hours I'll never get back. (That's two and a half hours altogether; my patience with it disappears after maybe twenty-five minutes, and I may play for another twenty-five just for the excuse to bitch, but sometimes I forget just how bad it was.)
On the bright side, this is the only truly scarring experience I've ever had with the bargain bin. Just lucky, I guess.

When I rented the Aidyn Chronicles.
Thank the heavens I rented it first.
What was to be the must have RPG for the N64 turned out to be a festering sore on the foot of game making. As a fledging RPG fan at the time, I was crushed.
Also, I almost come to tears everytime I realize I really should of kept my hands on Ogre Battle 64...I sold it for cheap right after I beat it because I was pissed off with the ending I got...now it's selling for $50+. I am such a moron...

Whenever a character DIES on Disgaea, preventing me from getting the good ending. *grumbles*Which reminds me:
Whenever a character dies in Fire Emblem, forcing me and my anal-retentiveness to restart the chapter, no matter how well I was doing up until that point, no matter how useless the character may have been, whether or not I was ever going to use the character again.
What? I'm picky.

I spent six hours for three days on a Harvest Moon game.
It got overwritten. End of story.
Others? Every time I play a ROM on the computer, and my mum cleans out the computer without telling me, it's gone. Days and days of work gone. Like Final Fantasy IIIj. Arrgh...I'll never know what'll happen without looking at a walkthrough of sorts...stupid Water Temple...Shrine...place!
Worst things that could possibly happen? Game gone after long and hard efforts, game interrupted by death or freezing or game and not being able to save thus losing hours of work, humiliating defeats, losing a friend's game after "borrowing" it for days and days, both Memory Card and game lost or destroyed...oh, especially the Memory Card for Gamecube people. That's just horrible. I dunno about other consoles.

For a while I've been playing this game, superpower 2, a geopolitical game where the object is to choose a country and do whatever you want with it.
I was trying to take over the world, so my next target was Fiji for its resources. Apparently, it was Russia's too. This ensued...

I've got two that were really just tests of patience.
1) The first involves PSO (Phantasy Star Offline): I was going through a stage recently (Episode 2, the Temple, for those that play), trying to get a nifty weapon with one character for a weaker character.
Just to inform you of how I had to get this thing, I had to go through a stage and fight a boss to get it, which meant I only had one shot for each time I loaded up the game. Also, the chances were 1/16, meaning it should be pretty easy to get it, right?
WRONG! I must have played through that stage at least twenty times trying to get that damn weapon, and pretty much every run was freaking annoying!
Count in the factor that it would take at least an hour for every run, and you've got almost a day of my life pointlessly wasted for one item...
At the very least, I have the thing now, and I got a LOT of leveling done on the character I was using, I think over ten levels total.
2) Soul Calibur 3: I was trying to get to night Terror for, I think, over a week, with no success at all. At first I used Nightmare, but stopped because of having to face Setsuka all the time. Then I switched to Siegfried, but still couldn't get to that big ugly thing for a long time.
The only good thing that really came out of this was the fact that I got pretty damn good with Siegfried after it was all over. Because of that, my friend and I have some awesome Siegfried vs. Nightmare battles that are a lot of fun.

I too had a problem with Soul Calibur 3 playing Voldo. Voldo and I don't mix...at all. S many times I went up against that ugly scythe dude at the very end and would get wasted.
I think around the 50th time I just gave up and switched to Asteroth to demolish everything in his path. I dislike playing as voldo very much.

Playing Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, then having a bug lock-up the game so you can't proceed to the last boss fight.
While I liked playing, it pissed me off something fierce. Good news is, I was able to get both endings the next time I played through.
Spending hours upon hours trying to get a complete collection of cards in FF VIII, then finding out one of the most important towns rules are a mix of random and a lot of other complicated rules. I just stopped and that was the last time I played that game I love so much.
Oh, and the difficulty of Trauma Center: Under the Knife for the DS will humble any man (or woman. or alien I guess.)

I was playing Tails of Symphonia on hard mode, and was fighting Abyssion WITHOUT a half-divide. (anyone who has fought this guy knows how freakin hard he is. The guy has 120,000 HP) He was down to 2000 HP and the power went out at my house. Shutting down my GC and losing my data for the battle.
Playing Fire Emblem for GBA, on chapter 16x training my guys in the arena. Got everyone but Wil to 16, he's 15 so i think one more battle in the arena should do it. Reminds me of what happened to my friend. He was playing Dragon Quest 8 when his dog trips over the controller's cord. Unfortunately his PS2 sat on a shelf on the wall. The PS2 falls, the game cracks, and the PS2 has not worked since then.
FF7 Was the first RPG I played in a videogame that was mine. And the only one that I tried to reach level 99. When my characters where 85-90, I(For no real reason) wanted to beat Sephiroth, again. The thing is, most of you must know that after you enter, there's no way back, so I had two saves- One for leveling up and one for when I go beat Seph...........yep, I saved over the wrong one. Never touched FF7 again. NEVER!
And of course, when I had my N64, MANY Saves were deleted by my sis, or just saved over, after all I CAN do it again from the start because i'm her good brother. Bitch...

Mine was pretty recent, and over a long period of time: I think there's a cat in my PC, because it seems every week something else doesn't work for it, first Big Rigs, then Gimp, then it's a little fuzzy, probably due to my deep depression in that time period, then the N64 emulator, then the SNES emulator, now Flash is getting kind of slow...
It also seems that my router is eating my bandwidth while I sleep, because my internet connection is getting slower and my IP adress keeps changing mysteriously.
Can somebody help me with this?! I can't play an online game anymore other than Socom: Fireteam Bravo!
