I'm thinking about getting one, since I don't own a regular DS, the games look good, but what I'm really interested in is FF3 (Jap version) coming out in English for it. So, is that Nintendo DS "lite" worth buying?

NSMB. Phoenix Wright. Trauma Center. Mario Kart. Animal Crossing. Phantom Hourglass(eventually).
That's six excellent reasons to own a DS. So, yeah, any DS is very, very much worth getting.
edit: also Tetris and Meteos, but that's just from what I hear. I don't have either of them.

DS is going to be your only source for 2D gaming this generation, as predicted by a whole grouping of people including IGA (head of Castlevania atm) and one of the CEOs of SNK/Playmore. So if you like 2D games....I would suggest getting it.
Also, I already own 6 games for the system and only one of them isn't that great (Metroid Pinball, I'd stay away from it). Otherwise every game I own and played on thesystem sofar is either fun or very good.
Even the crazy games you think would be way out there like Osu! or Super Princess Peach are really good.

DS' are definitely worth buying. Apart from the games listed above there is Castlevania DoS and soon Portait of Ruin, Mario & Luigi PiT, Metroid Hunters, Ouendan, Advance Wars DS, if you don't have a GBA you get access to that whole library(however the button layout for this is quite annoying), and if you want a real challenge Kirby's Canvas Curse. Also Children of Mana, DQ Slime, Elite Beat Squad, there's almost certain to be a Fire emblem eventually and more.
As for a Lite the advantages to it over a brick are
-better ergonomics, your hand will get cramped a LOT less than with the DS Brick or a PSP.
-it feels solider and is apparently just as sturdy as the DS Brick and able to take falls very well.
-MUCH(up to 4x) brighter than the Brick max light setting.
-more battery efficiency, apparently at max light setting it still has 8 hours of play on a charge.
-cover for GBA slot when not in use.
- proper off switch on the side of the machine, rather than easy to hit off button on the face.
- better audio quality
-sharper visuals
-It looks DEAD SEXY!(especially if you import the black or navy ones from Japan)
Disadvantages
-The brick is probably better with impacts than the Lite though both far outclass the PSP in this regard.
-The Lite still hasn't fixed the annoying button layout for the GBA games, though it's greater overall ergonomics means it's still better in this regard
- It more expensive than the Brick

I love my DS Lite. I imported it and don't regret it one bit. I was willing to pay an extra $80 bucks and it was worth it.
It's the same price as the regular DS as well.
And even though I've only had it a month, it seems like a pretty solid piece of equipment. Comparable to the Gameboy Advance SP (the clamshell that was a square, had backlit, and recharable battery) in terms of suffering damage.
Meaning, anything short of dropping it from waist high onto concrete EDIT: shouldn't really be a problem. EDIT. (Whoops, made it seem more fragile. No, it's a pretty solid piece of technology.) And I"m pretty sure a Warranty would cover breakage anyway.
I never had a regular DS, but I've never gotten tired holding it. It does live up to it's name. It does have a very nice sense of weight though, and it feels very... good. I don't know why. It fits into the palm of my hand (keep in my mind, I have above average hand size.)
So, yes, I highly recommend it. And get New Super Mario Bros with it. It rocks. I'd also recommend Mario Kart DS and Tetris DS. I have Metriod DS and Trauma Center: Under the Knife (a medical sim -\(o.O)/- , Yeah, I know, but it's good.) But I can't really recommend those, as I personally find them a bit difficult to control. The DS may be innovative and occasionally result in awesome gameplay, but sometimes the touchscreen controls are a bit of a chore. However, there are plenty of reguar games that simply make little to no use of it.
I'd rate the DS as a system 4.5 out of 5. I'd say the DS Lite hardware gives it a point on it's own (much better lighting, less heavy, slimmer, sharper screen, and better button layout and feel.)
As a matter of fact, I'd imagine the old school controller will be the same, with maybe slightly bigger buttons. But again, my hands are above average in size, so it may be just fine for you.

Thanks for the advice! I'll probably go pick one up when I get paid. :D
