ok last night I was watching adult swim. Unlike usual, I was watching TV in the livingroom. Then they came in, and guess what? They sat down and started watching Ghost in the Shell: SAC with me. To clarify, it was one of those deeply philosophical diologue heavy episodes.

We were watching as they were having a long conversation you need a wide vocabulary to even get the basic idea of what they are saying. So what comment did I get? It was my mom saying "why does she have such big boobs?" My immediate thought was, 'after all that, and you get big boobs?'

I would go on, but the conversation actually goes downhill from there. Its sad when your mom pointing out someones cup size is the high point of the conversation.

I know what you're saying. I was sitting in the living room watching Naruto, when out of nowhere my dad sits on the couch while I'm in the recliner. The first thing to come out of his mouth is "I hate this stuff, the big eyes, the stupid expressions. Can we change this?"

I was pissed off so I gave him the remote and walked out the room. I watched the remainder of Naruto on the TV in my sisters room. I like to watch anime alone, so I locked the door and continued watching the show. Everyone thought I was doing.... something in there.

It's pretty sad when the only one in your house that appreciates anime is you.

Luckily my brother and I explained everything as much as we good in a manner most convoluted when our mother asked about what the deal is with anime.

After that she just shook her head and whenever she sees us watch it its, "oh, your shows. Having fun? Anything get blown up in a bloody manner? well I'm going to go read."

Something along those lines. Rather funny

I guess now would be a bad time to say how my mother owns half the anime collection my family has.

And that she constantly gets more animes, and discusses them with me and my siblings...and has good taste in them too.

Luckily (or unluckily as he can be annoying sometimes) my older brother is as big of an anime fan as I am.

As for my parents. They drive me nuts when it comes to anime. I don't mind that they don't enjoy watching it, but I wish they would just let me enjoy it. I swear, every time a NEW episode of Fullmetal Alchemist came on (and you can imagine how seriously I wanted to watch these episodes), it was their mission to bug me throughout the entire episode. They may have not talked to me all day, but as soon as I sit down on the couch to watch my new episode of FMA, they pop into the room and start asking me stuff that they could have asked earlier or waited to ask. And the TV in the living room is pretty much the only TV I can watch it on, so I'm kind of stuck. >_<

Me and my family have a pretty good system when it comes to it.

It's called, "You watch what you watch, I watch what I watch, and we make no comments about the other's taste."

Of course, truth be told, Most of the anime I've watched as of late has been on DVD. I can't really stay up to chace Adult Swim anymore, 'cause I have to wake up relatively early on Sundays.

Well, as usual, my parents see anime as a cartoon in general. Everytime they see me watch anime or some form of cartoon, they're always like "How can you stand watching that shit?". That's really the only thing that irks me. It's wierd because even though they hate anime, they both just fell in love with Steamboy. All-in-all, they are just apathetic when it comes to my anime. They just mind their own business and I'm glad that they don't just jump all over me when it comes to what I watch on TV.

My brother is an odd one. I'm not sure about his stand point on anime is. He's just very biased when it comes to anime. When he likes a particular anime, he says all the others are utter shit when it comes to the ones he likes. His favorite is Ronin Warriors which aired on Toonami for a little while and then it got canceled. It's really hard to have a conversation with him because he'll somehow sneak in a "It's just not as good as ".

That'll just flare up an arguement and someone's just gonna end up hurt since he's very violent. Whenever I bring up a certain "flaw" on an anime he likes or I try to make him realize how biased he his on anime and tell him to give other anime a chance, he'll just end up getting [i]real physical. Yes, it does suck when the only person who really understands anime in your household is you.

My little brother is such a hipocrite when it comes to anime. He'll see me in my room watching it(YTV on friday at 9pm and later is the only time anime comes on) and he'll start saying its stupid and start saying the name of the show in a high pitched annoying voice like its supposed to be funny. Then 5 minutes later, he'll come in and watch what i'm watching for another 2 hours. Then there's my mom and dad, who do think anime is stupid, but keep their comments to thereselves. But every friday my dad's friend Jay is at our house, and he has an opinion on everything. He'll comment on every little thing he thinks is stupid about anime and won't leave me alone to watch it in peace so i'm forced into my room to watch.

The general style of anime does often make it susceptible to stuff like this. There really is no good reason for 95% of all female characters in anime over the age of 11 to have ample, E cup breasts (those under 11 are restricted to D cup :p). There's often a lot of overexaggeration in anime, and let's not even get into how awful dubbing or translation can get.

I wouldn't really restrict this headache crap to just anime, it's like anything. Don't judge a book by its cover, or whatever. The cover in this case just happens to be females that have two 2d4 bludgeoning weapons attached to their chest.

Edit: The only anime I've ever watched on a TV was Cowboy Bebop: The Movie, and I forced my dad to watch it with me. He liked it. (And pfft, how could you not like Cowboy Bebop).

My folks tolerate my anime, although I do get the occasional "Why does she have to wear the slutty outfit?" or "This is... so stupid..." comment. They will watch some, however, and I give them credit for that. My dad will watch and enjoy some action anime, like Cowboy Bebop and the like. Sometimes he'll go for Samurai Champloo, if it's got good action sequences.

My mom likes Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo for its humor, although some of it is a little too much for her. She also enjoys Miyazaki's (sp?) work for its artistic value; She really got into "Howl's Moving Castle" and certain parts of "Spirited Away" (She said it was way too long, though.)

Surprisingly, my mom really liked "Paranoia Agent" the first time it ran on Cartoon Network. She watched it every week to try and solve the big mystery of Li'l Slugger.

Yeah...I need to give my family more credit.

A month or so ago, I came back from work, my my mom and sister were watching the subbed version of "Castle in the Sky" that was on TCM a while...apparently, they recorded it so they could watch it later.

It was very much a "" moment...quite unexpected.

I tell ya, my mom + anime = pain in the arse. For starters, she assumes its all porno (can you blamer her too much, with all the scantily clad women?). I don't watch too much on T.V., so most of the pain-in-the-arsery comes from my small DVD collection (Excel Saga, Trigun, first DVD of FLCL). I usually keep it hidden, because my dummy brothers will watch it and leave the DVD on the floor when ever they find it. So when my mom finds them (she's nosy as hell, too) we go through the same, irritating ritual, as follows:

To start, she asks if its dirty. Then, she'll make me hand whatever box is on top to here. She will then hold it firmly with both hands, while starring at it intently, as if expecting to turn into a venomous snake. Then she make me say its name twice, even though she's starring right at the bloody title. Then she reads it herseld twice, pronouncing it like she doesn't speak English. Afterwards, she'll make me describe the entire plotline to her, and finish by explaining why I keep it hidden (she never believes me when I say its because Matt and John treat my stuff like I can get it for free).

So, all in all, a serious pain in the butt. Also, she seems almost afraid of the idea of me buying any more of it. About a month ago, we were at SunCoast, which was having a going out of business sale, and while we're checking out, I see they have the special edition release of The Irresponsible Captain Taylor, which I've heard from several sources is freakin' hillarious. So I get in the back of the line to see if I can buy it (it was 60% off, too!) It was reserved, so I couldn't get it. As we're leaving, she starts interigating me as to what I was trying to get-

Mom: Was it dirty?
Me: Of course not. (I'm not stupid)
Mom: Was it anime?
Me: Yeah.
Mom: Well, you don't need any more of that shit.

That is the reason why i don't watch anime with my parents. Not only would my parents not like it, they wouldn't understand alot of it (like fanservice).

Parents these days just need to be educated about anime. One major thing they need to learn of is the huge difference between anime and hentai, which the media got confused about not so long ago.

My mom is the worst of all. She actually says, in varying degrees of frequency, that all anime is satanic... because it comes from japan. I swear to god.She references the shintoism spirits, but she doe'sn know enough that so she merely says "That anime crap is satanic because all those japanese people worship demons" in addition, she contiuonsly gets on me about Sci-Fi(which I write) and Fantasy for the same reasons. I cna't even get a comic book without either hearing it's from the devil or a waist of my life. I bought the graphic novelized first six Ultimate spider-man issues, when she found out she fussed forever more about it costing fifteen dollars.. of my money that I worked for. I actually can only watch anime in peace when she's not around or asleep, and lord help me if the show has characters with super-human powers.
Watching Samurai Champloo
Mom: This another anime show?
Me: Yeah, it's pretty good.
Mom: What's it about? people with powers?
Me: No, it's a somewhat realistic show
Mom: But they still fight, I've told you about those devilsh japanese shows.

My Step dad is the worst. He said "I like my shows being more realistic" keep in mind this is the same guy who has 90% of his shows on Sci-Fi network.

My problem is abit different from yours. They think ANYTHING animated is meant for little kids (which they said flat out). Observe
Anime character swears
Mom: *Gasp* did you hear what that cartoon just said?
Me:...yea...so?
Mom: They shouldn't say that on a kids show.
Me: But its not meant for little kids
Mom: But its a cartoon

In other words I get fewer 'comments' when I am watching something like Billy and Mandy then DBZ

And they wonder why I took the DVD player after I got Samurai X and Vampire Hunter D. Like I would watch that around them.

My parents think anime is for kids. Y'know, becuase it's animated. They thought I was to old to be watching DBZ when I was 12. Geez, I never got a single episode watched without someone coming in and saying I was to old for what I was watching. Kinda curbed the anime watching side of my brain, I never see any these days. and when I do, I switch the channel whenever someone comes in 'cuase I can't be bothered with the hassle.

I always try to watch my shows by myself. If I don't my brother will come in and laugh at what I'm watching. He thought the first few episodes of Paranoia Agent were cool because it was freaky, but after a while he got sick of it.

Also, if my parents come in and look at the name of the show (usually some japanese sounding name), they'll screw up their face looking like "Wtf is this??" Sometimes, they'll just horribly screw up the name. I know they can probably say it right, but it just sounds funnier when they do it the weird way.

Though, the thing with my dad is that for some reason, he always thinks I'm doing "stuff" because I usually just use the computer by myself and stuff like that and he'll just randomly come in the room and look at what I'm doing..

Heh, Since most of the anime I watch is either on my compy or saturday morning cartoons (god help me) my family doesnt bother me much since I'm the only one who wakes up THAT early on a saturday, and the compy is in my room, along with the TV so I don't have to interact with em.

But when they do ask questions, its all just about whether its too violent or not. Which I respond autonominously(SP?) "no".

My mom would watch the stuff with me, she'd point out Neitzche in Gundam Wing, and mock the reuse of animation in Dragon Ball Z. She called them my Japenese Soap Operas. In a way she's right. But at least these arent' always about weird love traingles. Right. I got my mom addicted to Ghibli movies and CardCaptor Sakura. And she's seen a little of a few other shows and liked all those as well. But she doesn't have the time to watch full shows so she can't get into Anime.

My dad still just makes fun of anything he hears that's not in english as if he's a 10 year old, let alone will sit down and try to watch a movie. The one time I tried to get him to watch something I put in Laputa: Castle in the Sky and he spent half the movie in the kitchen 'cleaning'.

My dad? He gets mad at Lost because it uses flash backs. I'm most definately not going to try to get him to watch a subbed anime. Besides, if he glances at my screen while I'm watching some, it gets labeled a cartoon. He also doesn't really have enough free time to really get into it. So, not worth the effort.

My mom suffers from the cartoon syndrome too. Plus, she gets wierded out easily. Baldur's Gate was satanic because it had a skull on the box. Yeah.

My mum just ignores it, so no problem, if she says anything disparaging(only really happened a couple of years back during the DBZ addiction, which she compared to a soap opera, in retrospect she was right:sweatdrop, but I was 13 at the time) I'll remind her she got addicted to Neighbours for a season, and she leaves me alone.

My sister doesn't really care about it either way, though apparently she loved Trigun.

My dad is actually pretty good with it partially cause one of his best friends is an old school nerd, who's been playing D&D, computer games(his hand me downs are what got me into RTS') and importing subbed anime and samurai films as long as one has been able to do such things, making my dad pretty tolerant of my nerdish tendencies. He never really got into it himself, though that may be because his one real attempt to get into it was Neon Genesis Evangelion and his reaction was the same as mine " It's okay, but WTF:brow: ?".
If he'd started with something like Ghost in the Shell he'd probably still be watching it regularly, then again he watches very little TV anyway.

My parents don't really care what me and my brother watch now that we're technically adults. When we were younger, they didn't care what we watched for the most part, but if the show we wanted to watch wasn't exactly suitable, they'd say "No" pretty quickly, or sit and watch it with us and if anything bad popped up, the channel would be changed. Or, we'd watch it at our Aunt's house, where we saw a lot of really weird and creepy horror movies, plus some other types of movies(no, not porn or anything like that. our aunt just had a different way of raising her kids, and let them watch anime, and R-rated horror movies, and things like that).

I've been hiding my Evangelion box set for about three years now because I know that once my mom sees it, it's gonna get chucked out of the house. Between the nudity, the violence, and the swearing, there's no way this is gonna stand.

My plan is to wait until my 18th birthday, sit her down, show her every Eva thing I have (box set, plus both movies) and say, "I've been watching this stuff since I was twelve, but you were too busy checking my Ultimate Spider-Man comics for porn to notice." Then vamoose to college.

Other than that, I don't watch much anime if I don't have to. The dialogue on most of it just makes me embarrassed to be associated in any way with it, and I'm too damn indie to watch stuff a lot of people watch, like Naruto and FMA. Which is pretty hypocritical, considering that I love Eva.

My mother is... special. :P it took me until I was 16 before I was ALLOWED to watch Anime. DBZ was, qoute, "Far too violent for a kid your age to watch!"

I now have my own apartment in the basement, and in an act of rebellion, got my 9 year old sister hooked on anime's such as "loveless", ((a most AMAZING near-yaoi that everyone that watches adores)), "Cowboy Bebop, series AND movie", and "Naruto." Hope ((My sister)) Adores Anime, and sits and watches with me.

My mom came home one night while I was at work, to find Hope casually logged onto my computer watching Princess Mononoke. And decides that THAT isn't too bad for Hope to be watching. ((Yes, Krylo, before you ask, unrated version.)).
