View Full Version : I hereby dub the Wii as "Revolution"

Spread the word. I've been thinking about how to take advantage of a pre-emptory strike, to have the most influence on Wii's nickname. Because if someone doesn't get a clever nickname, I will PERSONALLY go to all Wii offices and spray paint the nickname on all Wii offices.
Or not.
Point is, I've been working on something catchy and appropriate.
- "Double-eye" (Y'know, it's double-ewe eye eye?) ...maybe...
- Something with world war 2 (WWII)... like... wartoo? Not likely.
- Something with 'l33t' or 'w00t'? Nah, not enough recognition.
- Ignore the stupidity and keep the decent name of 'Revolution'?
Of course. Why didn't I think of it before? *stamps big, red REJECT'D on Wii title*
On with "Revolution"! Viva the 'revolution' revolution! ....or not.
Spread the word! Or wait a bit to see if a better nickname comes out. Being relevant to "wee" would help, since many know nothing of "revolution".
*scurries off to other forums, currently Tues. night*

Or you could just... accept the name.
... I mean, what's in a name? Would manure smell any better if it were called "warm springtime dew chestnuts?"
If you want to carve the word "Revolution" on your wii, fine by me. But the point is... we largely already had this discussion before, with a hostile aura surrounding it.

Bah, I agree Wii is a stupid name, but when has doing anything stupid stopped Nintendo before?
Yes, there will be the onslaught of Wii little piggy jokes, which will Wii, Wii, Wii all the way home. And of course, the where do you put your wii jokes will ensue.
Where do I put my put my Wii? On the floor.
Do you need some Resolve carpet cleaner for that?

I'm pretty sure that by now just about everyone else has accepted the Wii as a valid name. You gotta admit that after awhile it grows on you.

Yeah, Wii is the official name. Yeah, we will never hear the end of all the piss and penis jokes, and will probably laugh whenever someone asks, "Can I have your Bawls? I'm playing with my Wii."
But honestly, it's a name. It's already been pounded into the ground before, and we need no more of this. If you still want to to have a Wii-volution revolution, go ahead. Just not here.
Seriously, Wii don't care.
Apologies for the rant. Carry on.
Ooh, look, shiny!

Look, given the fact that it's Nintendo, be thankful that the name is the only thing that sucks. (http://www.virtual-boy.org/)

Unfortuantly, the more I see of the Wii, the more apprehensive I feel. I'm sorry, but I know I'm not going to be interested in any of the motion sensitive games. Its a neat hook, but after a while, I can see it losing its charm for me really fast. Plus, the way E3 seems to be covering it, it sounds like its a feature that'll be used like the stylus on the DS, which pretty much demands all games for it figure out how to use the stylus in some fashion.
That, and I hope there's something that can be used to transform the nunchuck into something along the lines of a classic controller. I don't know about you, but it'll be as ergonomically comfortable to have both my arms waving around like that.
Maybe it'll be better than I think it'll be come release time, but from the E3 coverage I'm seeing, it seems like there's just a wee too much hype around the Wii for my paranoia to be entirely at ease with.

I feel quite the opposite, actually. I think Nintendo is deliberately making the games balanced. They're emphasizing the movement aspect, obviously, but they're not going overboard, and honestly, it doesn't feel gimmicky at all.
At first I reeled when I heard you couldn't play all of Zelda with the Wiimote. But then I realised--that's exactly it. They're tryign to usher in new dynamics in gaming without beating you over the head with it. And so far I've seen an immensely positive reaction from gamers and the industry, which leads me to believe Wii will be a solid system.
it sounds like its a feature that'll be used like the stylus on the DS, which pretty much demands all games for it figure out how to use the stylus in some fashion.
While I am disappointed more developers aren't taking advantage of this (and actually, they are...if you've been monitoring the DS library you can see that), this is actually not true. While the stylus is a necessary factor to consider, not all games have to be Feel the Magic, nor should they be. And that's a great direction for Nintendo to take with Wii. I'm hoping people will be having too much fun with multiplayer SMGalaxy to care about that sort of stuff.
That, and I hope there's something that can be used to transform the nunchuck into something along the lines of a classic controller.
Um, you have seen this, right?

Oh, NPF'ers I've been thinking.
(A dangerous pastime I know.)
Anyway, remember the hoopla surrounding the 'new' BM sprite? (The one with the stripped pants.) People complained a lot about it. But over time, people began to accept it. Of course, there are still some who would wish for something different (or even the older ones). But to quote Reggie, "Change is good."
Wii. A simple name. And the more I've seen it written or spoken without actually mentioning the name, the more I've become comfortable with it.
Now I'm going to quote someone who was a lot smarter than probably I ever will be.
What's in a name? That which we call a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet.
In the end, that means what will be important is the games.
And from what I've seen so far, it will deliver in spades. (27 playable demos, and a fairly robust launch list.)

I still think Wii is the dumbest name ever.
But I mean my God (http://www.nintendo.co.jp/n10/e3_2006/wii/controller.html).
So much white plastic!
It's like watching my Super Nintendo wrapped around my Ipod, in some kind of obscene, carnal embrace.
And it turns me on.
Look I don't care if they change my name to the fucking Wii, just give me more!
... Oh god and there's a video. I mean come on that's just downright indecent.
Oh I want to play with my Wii. I want to play with my Wii so bad!

After seeing the video for Super Smash Bros: Brawl, I feel intense sexual desire for the Wii. And I'd gladly sell my soul if I didn't have $250 already anyway.

I that i'll say on the matter is that Rockstar Games may make Dirty Use from the Wii Controller, by making and selling some "Dirty" 3rd party Plugin attachments and a Rumble Pack, that will make gamers fill "Naughty" and a certain Game Hater's Head Explode... and then implodes...

http://www.4colorrebellion.net/media/pics/06/05/vccontroller.jpg
No, no I hadn't. Me likes. Mostly. At least its something that a 3rd party developer could make into something that's a tad more ergonomic, I remember how sore I could get on the old rectangle controllers. This, while a good control design, looks like they could use a bit of improvement in the ergonomic department.
...
Does anybody know if this smaller controller will also have force-feedback? It just looks too thin to do that right. Fifth's link shows the remote thingie doing vibration, but unless they managed to shrink the tech, I don't know...

What's funny about this, is that everyone sees the Wiimote-Dildo-vibrator-nunchaku and goes "Man, I could NEVER play that," and totally forgets/doesn't know/ignores the fact that it was the second thing they said after releasing information about the then-Revolution.
I'm not trying to attack you, Bob, but I get a little frustrated with how much I see myself quoting Nintendo's press statement. Or Locke, in this case.

To be fair, Mirai, the classic-style controller has not been publicized so much. From what I've seen, most people are not aware of it. So, instead of getting all mad that everybody doesn't automatically know everything that you do, try being a bit more polite about it.
Back on topic: Yeah, I've actually gotten pretty used to the name. I guess you could say that the Wii has really grown on me. (snortgigglezomgwtflol)

You know, at least Nintendo has been creative with their name, unlike Microsoft and Sony.
Sony has: Playstation, Playstation 2, Playstation 3
Microsoft has: Xbox, Xbox 360.
You see? All Sony and Microsoft did was put numbers at the end of a name they used for a old system, and called it "new".
Nintendo is new by creating a new creative name for a creative system, the Wii.

Yeah, but Nintendo hasn't always been like that.
Nintendo
Super Nintendo
Nintendo 64
And don't even get me started on the game boys.
I still very much like Nintendo, but they are still fallible. If I don't see long term support for the Wii, I'm going to be pissed.
However, if they get enough people to buy one, obviously 3rd party companies will release games for it. And let's not forget that the development kit of rthe Wii will be a fraction of the price for the 360 and PS3.
Still worried 3rd parties might churn out crap for it though. I saw a comparison to the DS, and I think that is a fairly good comparison.
Wait, I just had an idea.
Punch-Out for the Wii. Think about it.

What I've got to admit is that wii has grown on me. The name, I mean.
Not that I actually like the name, but I can easily accept it. It doesn't sound foreign or funny. It just sounds like what it should be. At the same time, it doesn't have the cool vibe of "revolution," but at least there's no negative connotations.

Say, Catlover, do you love cats? Like sexually?
No, of course not.
But you can twist it that way.
I'm going to go to my g/f's house and then she'll let me handle her Playstation.
Then she'll show me her Xbox.
Gee, you can take any name and make it sound dirty.

Meh. It certainly won't convice people that Nintendo is trying to get away from its kiddie image. And even if they were going for a cutesy name, they could've come up with something that sounded a bit more like a real word.
And frankly, when I say Wii aloud it just sounds stupid.
I personally won't care all that much if the Wii plays decent games, but if you're expecting me to every think the name Wii is a good idea, you'll be waiting for a long time. And personally, I wouldn't be shocked if Nintendo changed the name again before all is said & done.
Nothing is set in stone, and calling it the Wii for E3 certainly got people talking, and when you get closer to release date, changing the name again will increase talk yet again.

Wii does sound like a real word: we. It's all part of their "we have something for everyone" marketing gimmick. That's why the Nintendo spokesepeople used the word "we" so much at E3. It's actually a very good name for the console, so be happy if the name is the worst part about it.
