Soo..... You suppose Square likes FF7 or something?

Dirge of Cerberus: Release date: 8/22/06

That's right, lads and lasses: Squeenix is putting out another FF7 spinoff, this time focusing on Vincent Valentine as the main character.

A review of the plot:
"From here, a hunt is taking place over the entire world. For the worthless prey, massacre and atrocities are planned..."

Three years after Final Fantasy VII, a mysterious group suddenly surfaces to raid a town. They are a group of soldiers known as the Deep Ground Soldiers (DG Soldiers), created by the late President Shin-Ra, and trapped under Midgar due to the Meteor Crisis.

An optional character of the original game, Vincent Valentine, personally has some connection with this series of events, but the reason is unknown. What awoke in the underground in these three years? And what is the tragedy that is beginning? When the world is engulfed by darkness, his handgun will play the dirge...

'It's the beginning of the end...'

About the gameplay:
Dirge of Cerberus has been described as a "Shooter RPG", combining both RPG and Third-Person Shooter styles. Kitase decided on this style because he's a fan of action gun games, and decided to go with that particular style for Dirge of Cerberus. Despite this, there are still going to be RPG characteristic (such as a strong focus on storyline) because creating a simple shooter game was boring to design.

The basic gameplay, however, is styled after typical third person shooters. In previews, we've seen Vincent use a variety of guns, including Cerberus, a sniper rifle, and something that resembles a rapid firing machine gun. Also, his "claw" can be used as a melee type weapon to attack opponents.

Vincent is allowed to carry a maximum of only three guns. However, these guns are all fully customizable, with the ability to buy different sights to work in for a variety of ranges.

The RPG characteristics seem to resemble those of Kingdom Hearts. You'll see familiar things such as Hit Points and an Items menu, but the battles are fought in real time, with the amount of EXP you gain from defeating an enemy appearing above their head after they are defeated. This summary says the game will be mainly third-person, but I've read that there might be some first-person fights too. That should be interesting: a first-person RPG.

Characters: Looks like Square is bringing back most of the original cast of FF7. Good side: All your favorite characters are back. Again. Bad side: Cait Sith and Yuffie are back. Again.

They have a preview for it on the Advent Children DVD...and it looks absolutely amazing. I can't wait for more information to come out on this game.

Welcome to two years ago. Population: YOU!

Now, talking seriously, I heared the story was kickass, so far better than the fanservice awesome (yet unsubstanced) crap called Advent Children. But as far as the gameplay, I've read in a lot of places that the controls are confusing and that it is very short. However, I have to merit REDEMPTION is a cool song.

I'll copy paste my post from months ago:

So the game comes out in six days in Japan, and considering the normally humongous amount of FFVII fanboys that exist in the internet community, I was surprised to see there is no thread here at the 8bit forums. There is an AC thread, but.. well, just watch this video (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7985073303233220183) and I'll let you know more after that. By the way, I don't know, but maybe you could count the appearance of a character in that trailer as spoilerish for AC, so watch at your own risk.

Featuring Vincent Valentine, the game revolves around the Deep Ground Soldier, a secret of the Shin-ra corporation that remained in the shadows during the last three years. Apparently they have some connection to Lucrecia and Hojo, and inside the DGS there is a elite squad of high rank members called Zvet (russian for color). Apparently, Gackt, a j-pop singer also makes an appearance in the game from what has been revealed.

So, any commentary, feedback, fanboyism?

Translation for the first part of the trailer here:

Yuffie: Finished on this end. What about you?
Vincent: Done. But, Yuffie. Take a look at the Mako cannon.
Yuffie: There's nothing really... huh, what?
Vincent: Thought so.
Yuffie: W-wait! This isn't right! This shouldn't be possible. There's no way anyone could be up there, not like this!
Vincent: Yuffie, you go on ahead back to Cloud and others. Looks like I've still got work to do here.
Yuffie: Ho-hold on! Vincent... This looks bad. Get back here!

[Redemption]

Vincent: Hm, I guess there's no way around it. Let's save the world. (or "let's try to save the world")

I'll give it a rental. It doesn't look at all craptastic, and I'll put up with unneccesary fanservice if the game it presents is fun.

It just sucks that I'll probably have to wait till Sony is all but bankrupt for a true revamped-release of FF7.

The only thing that keeps me from getting to a proper level of fanboy excitment of something inolving Vincent and Gackt is that I suck at console shooters...

I've seen alot of stuff about this. From what I've heard, not many like the camera, but who ever does, really?

I don't know if I like the third person shooter. Maybe if it was more DMCish I'd be more exited on it, but we'll see.

Galiant Beast and Chaos will be the only Limit beasts Vincy can go into, both of which have new and more awsome looks (Chaos is some straight up awsome shit right there!) and new powers and such.

But god damn it if Cid still has that cowboy voice so help me GOD!

I don't really get what people's problem is with Cid's voice. That's basically how I imagined he sounded back on VII. Wasn't that surprising to hear him.

Lucky you. I imagined less a cowboy and more a mechanicy voice, with just a little bit of cigaret smoking tough guy thrown in for kicks.

They could have at least done someone without that thick fucking accent.

I hope Reno's in this game. God I'm a whore.

I hate to burst some bubbles, but here are the Famitsu (a highly regarded Japanese game magazine) scored 7 out of 10 by all 4 reviewers.

That said, it could still be very appealing and possibly improved before it came out here. But, so ya know, I didn't want anyone's hopes getting too high.

Famitsu's score may be true, but I think it'll have more appeal over here, on account of we're so gun-crazy.

Inasmuch as I've ever seen, Famitsu's rating scale is pretty much "is it a Final Fantasy game?" with a 1 being "No, it's not a Final Fantasy game" and 10 being "Yes, it is, in fact, a Final Fantasy game."

A 7 for this, on that scale, does not sound particularly inappropriate.

I actually have... that is to say, I don't have a copy of what isn't this game that most definitely wasn't piracy-ized from Pakistan. I should give it a try, see if it looks any good.

Well, Americans tend to enjoy shooters more than the Japanese do. So...I don't tend to trust their scores on shooter games. I'd rather wait for the American reviewers to get their hands on it first.
